I use IPB, for my websites, and it's free to. The only thing you have to do is leave the copyright.

PHP is good, it's easy, etc. but what some people don't understand with IPB for example is that it's not because they have installed a IPB that the can create a webpage. those peolple forget that the basic language of PHP is HTML. You have to know HTML before you begin with PHP.

You dont HAVE to know html to be able to program in PHP although it would be pretty stupid to not know html and program in php as you need to include it into webpages with some kind of layout or you will have to echo out some html code in the scripts. It isnt a must but it would be a great plus to know it.

IMHO this not the correct point of view.

HTML is the "natural" output of every CSM, of every server-side scripting language at all. But that's it only because HTML was (and is) the "hystorical partner" of internet, as we all know. HTML is far from every scripting language, but every scripting language is forced to face with it.

An internet without HTML would be a better internet, but Internet as we all know is "made of" HTML. :)

Some of these CMS scripts can be found in the Addon Scripts section of cpanel. You can then install directly from cpanel, and so no need to dowload the package from the official sites, upload and do the configuartion which can be quite tough for inexperienced users.

I use mambo open source for my site(not hosted here)
Their output is html (as expected). Mambo opensource is so simple that the user do not need to know html. But he does need to understand how to install mambo.
So Try MOS @ www.mamboforge.com(google them!! i forgot the links)

For CMS's, HTML(with some other elements) makes up the layout and php deals with the dynamic parts. Shoutbox, logins, etc.

I haven't really tried CMS's that much because i find them cluttery and all the same because they always seem to have those three familiar columns.

Well, with Mambo at least, you can create or download templates without the 3 columns. mambo is very flexible in that aspect, and is not cluttery. :)

Hi,

My expirence regarding this is like that you can't do as much in PHP as you can in XOOPS. I've tried both PostNuke and PHPNuke without totaly satisfying. But if you like to personalize your site is knowlege into HTML and PHP a must.

Cheers
Jens

Try using mambo and get a nice skin or make one, they are a great product that will let you install those things you want, www.mambosolutions.com Theres an installer in Cpanel on this host so try it, and to leanr php you dont need to learn HTML, infact its a lot easyoer than html and i learned from W3C schools, do a search for tutorials.

For my site http://prodigyweb.info I have intergrated ipb with phpnuke istead of the default and stupid phpbb. An intergrated version of phpnuke with ipb is also available in a distributable format from www.ipbnuke.net. I highly reccomend you guys check it out, all that is need is the services of astahost, ftp program and a version ipb (prefferably ipb1.3 and later). It is working for a dream with me and I continue to add new mods to enhance my site. I have added the ibproarcade with tubesocks mod (2.5.1) from http://ibporarcade.com, enhanced download module from htpp://nuekstyles.com, D-SHoutbox from www.invisionize.com, and much more.. As you have found my site is heavely moded.

What does ipbnuke do?
Ipbnuke completely relys on ipb for the logging in and registering of users. So you login and out with ipb. Its great. And the ipb members table in the database is feeded of by ipbnuke, so all my account modules, etc are still used!

Disadvantages
A lack in modules, themes and login blocks are available for ipbnuke, so you must get Holbrookau (the owner of ipbnuke) to convert them, or if you pm me about themese you want converted I can convert them. This is because the themes and login blocks have to be converted to not use the default phpbb forum location and have full paths.

I highly reccomend any of you wiht limited knowledge in programming check ipbnuke out!!
