I used the MSN search today and here are the things I liked to point out.

MSN search does not seem to give high preference to domain names while most of the other search engines do. For eg. Searching for a non-english keyword trap17 should have resulted in trap17.com in the first place but instead more preference was given to another websites which were linking to trap17.
This could had been fine with some other keywords which had some meaning in english language, however this point was like one of the most downside of msn. Because, most of the msn searches are triggered by the web browser itself ( internet explorer ) and many a times, mistyped domain names or keywords should be searched for and corresponding domain names should be returned.

This also has negative effects. There are many domain names which correspond to commonly used search keywords. Like free web hosting, I think there are more than 50 sites whose domains have these words in it. But, in such cases msn can do an advanced filtering to see which domain actually has a lot of info regarding the keywords and it can return the results.

Second flaw, The search results are not sorted in page numbers so if you are going to find search more and more pages, you will have to rely on the Back and Next search links. That is rather crappy.

Third, It takes a very long time before your site appears in MSN search. I really hate this fact. Google includes any site with in a week and starts showing its indexed contect within a month or two. While most of the search engines including msn take about 6-7 months. I dont know. wtf takes them such a long time. I hope the new msn search will take pretty less time to index sites.

Also, the web site description returned by msn search is simply extracted from the title tags which may be good in some cases but most of the people ( when using frontpage ) forget to put that . And I saw some pages with descriptions of no more than 3 words. While the best way for extracting description would be get the highest keyword which occurs throughout the page and then extract a text of about 100 words which includes that keyword. I had used this method when I had created a search engine in perl ( a text file driven Search :-).

MSN search definately requires a lot of improvement.

Please post your suggestions and comments . ...

I think MSN concentrate to much on advertising. They have copied google by putting the sponsored links on the side (or did google copy MSN?) which is ok i don't mind that, but then they have some of the same links in the main search. I agree that some serious improvment is needed. One of the only things I do like about MSN search is that they have taken out the necessity of going to more than one page to search a range of things like encyclopedia, dictionary or just the web.

about the extracted results from title. google also have this, but it's not a bug to google. its a wierd features. and about key words any search engine have this failure but it's not thier fault, may be sometimes faulty. but it is becuase of unprofessional web masters that to enthusiasm to gain visitors :)

Like most other MS products, this damn thing also SUCKS.

As rightly pointed out by OpaQue, it take them >=6 months to add new site to their list of sites. I had submitted my site 7 months back ; and now atlast, they have included my site in their searches ........... but by now my host "anyxhost.com" went out of bussiness ................ so my site is of no use now.

Instead of trying to copy GOOGLE, they should try to improve the internal searching features of Windows.

Who cares? Is there anybody who actually uses MSN Search? Everybody knows Google is far more superiour.

MSN Search pollutes the web, they use far too agressive ways of spreading it around, like including it in their MSN Messenger, making things install the MSN Search Bar by default; making it search with it when you type something in the IE Address Bar, and it's absolutely unaffordable to have a search engine like that, and put Ads on it the way they do. Esp the popups etc. MSN is the purest evil ever to be spawned by a big company, like Microsoft.

Yeah lhunath,
The obtrusive way MSN advertises is really bad. Worst of all is the fact that it is installed as default with MS OS.
As I've told earlier, MS really SUCKS. Have any one of you ever seen a good MS product ? (if so please let me know and I'll tell you what sucks about it).
It's time that we stop being fooled by Billy and his Silly products.

You said MS is bad, but I have a question: what is your current OS and internet browser ?

Microsoft is too worried about making money for bill gates and not worring enough about how much yahoo and aol are walking all over them. This is probly why msn took so long to upgrade it's email, it was waiting to see how much yahoo would upgrade. and then with it's multi-billion $$ it bought more servers and hosted more storage space.

but i hafta agree that msn has the best instant messaging program, although i'd rather use yahoo (it allows you to talk to pplz that u don't have on ur buddie list) or mirc, it cuts down on spam and is extremely simple to use.

Hi vietpost,

My OS (at the time of writing) is Fedora Core I. However I also have Solaris in my machine and also Win2000.

Win 2000 is needed for synchronizing my PDA with my computer and the damn software doesn't have a Linux version.

My browser is obviously Mozilla.

Simply, it is not set out nicely enough. MSN Search does not have as many websites stored in its database. As stated earlier, the main websites do not come first, although it does allow smaller sites to get top of the list. Also, Opaque, could I please see your perl search engine? I'd like to see what it was like.

I don't like anything to do with M$N (I do use AIM and M$N for IM, only because I have a few friends who only use M$N, but I prefer AIM) or Mico$oft. I also don't use M$N search engine because I use Google instead. I love Google. My favorite thing about Google is how simple it's pages are. They don't load a bunch of other images and stuff so they load a lot faster.

I would rather stick with Google. That MSN Search is nothing to special if you ask me. Just a poser trying to be like Google and Yahoo!. I do like MSN Messenger though. That is the only reason I like MSN cause I love MSN Messenger but other than that MSN doesn't really apeal to me to much.

What i don't get is: how do all search engines differ? I know google is supposed to be the best and all that...but if you wanna know sumfin cool: go to www.overture.com and type in somethine...anything. notice the first 3 pages it first lists. now go to www.yahoo.com and type in the same keyword. notice the first 3 pages. go to msn and do the same...look at the first 3 pages...THEY'RE ALL THE SAME!! W00O0O0O!!

What's most sucky about MSN search is that with IE, if they can't find a site, it links to MSN search (with all good intentions, im sure of that :) ) and gives some 'relevant' options for you to choose. This creates stupid situations,

Below is a file I attached, explaining what I mean. (I don't know i any of you guys know Tibia, but it's a MMORPG -> Massive multiplayer online roleplaying game (dunno who thought THATone up :) ))

Allow me to translate this beautiful piece of result:

Next to the I: There aren't any results for 'tibia.com'

Then it says (follow the red arrow): Maybe you could try one of these related websites?

It appears (but maybe I'm wrong) that this URL is exactly the same as i typed :)

Yes! they did it again :)

Google nowadays is the seeker for lack of the net do not mean that I be the best but if his search engine is very powerful do not forget than bill gates I buy it but the internal structure was designed by 2 programmers of use you do not contain publicity and that load minus bits does it faster why

pft...You are all windows bashers lol....

First of all I can name one AMAZING PRODUCT that have come out of microsoft...HALO 1...So they messed thigns up on halo 2...I'm pretty sure 3 will be the greatest...

And yes one thing that I'm quite pissed about is that MSN merged with SYMPATICO (my internet connection ;) ) and now it's so much harder to access information about my account...But I must admit with this new merge sympatico can now give even faster internet connections for cheaper prices...Plus with all of microsofts space...It's kinda a win win lose win situation lol...

And yeah about the Windows being bad...I ask of you how many of you actualy use windows yet bash it...Cuz I use windows and I know it's not the best...But I don't constantly bash it...It's a decent Os and if you know how to mulnipulate it right...And maybe get yourself a freaking ad aware program and anti virus program and spyware program...And not go 2 crap sites that will obviously attempt to mess with your computer.. Then you shouldn't have any problems...

hey..
let me tell you one thing... msn added my website to their list in one day... when i go to google and type amkint i don't get my website, in msn i get...
what i mean is... msn search gives you more targetted and proper results...
eg: if i had to buy a car and if i search buy toyota in google, i will all sorts of results... including some guy's blog who is thinking of buying a car. this is one of the major disadvantages of google. too much unwanted results.

[post="15745"]<{POST_SNAPBACK}>[/post]

Too many unwanted results usually happen because a user did not enter detailed search terms. Instead of entering "Toyota", try entering search terms that are more specific to what you want to find. For instance:

 • If I want to find a place in Chicago that sells Toyotas, then enter "Chicago Toyota dealer"
 • If you want to know about the feature of various models of 2005 Toyotas, then enter "2005 Toyota features"
 • If you want to buy a used Toyota, you might enter "used Toyota" or "used Toyota for sale"

This is called "phrased searching' and will save you lots of time. Make sure that you include the quotation marks whenever you use phrased searching. For what its worth, here's a link to Google's "The Essentials of Google Search'. It will help you to see why Google searching can be so effective. :)

Using google, you have to be more specific about what you want, as already shown by SingleDaddyof2. By the way, msn search is really... It only shows the proper and popular sites, it eliminates all other choices! Msn search is for newbies! (No offence to anyone using msn search) Yahoo is also another example of MSN search, only that the e-mail is good!
