I read all the rules and terms of service here at Astahost and don't see it being mentioned. So, is it ok for a member to register twice here or is that double dipping? That is, if they can even keep up with two accounts....

One hosting per person, per household, per IP. No ifs or buts. I believe it's mentioned...or perhaps only in Trap17.

If a member would like to have two accounts, use one from AstaHost and one from Trap17. If that's not enough (I have to wonder why) refer to Qupis. If a member has so much time to post in both forums, suggest ComputingHost plan just $3.33 per month for 2.1GB and 33.3GB bandwidth. This will save so much time and energy keeping up with hosting credits on both forums <_<

Admins, before they approve hosting request, do some extensive search on member's IP address with all members of AstaHost (this is one of the reasons why it may take so long to approve).

No problem. I thought it was against the policy here. Just wanted to confirm since, as you pointed out, I have seen users with one account here and one at Trap17.

Do we have this policy written somewhere in the forums here? I tried digging it up yesterday to no avail <_<

Anyway, what should we do about this member now? Ban permanently or kill one of his accounts? Usernames:

Are both of them the same person?

I just increased his warn level and issued a message to him/her.

EDIT: It just gets worse, I just found that he has 3 accounts.

I noticed that, too, but my guess is that the oldest one is a different person. He does have the same IP as khaliwhatever, but both of them might have a dynamic IP address, and the registration date is one year ago.

Where are you guys looking to see the ip addresses and all that... could be a stupidly basic question but I'm half asleep so humor me hahaha.

And yea I knew multiple accounts is not allowed but I too have never seen it written in stone anywhere, would probably be good to throw a note in the registration documentation somewhere along the line just to let the newbies know.

It basically a rule of thumb, part of the netiquette <_<

Just use the IP address lookup tool, by clicking on a member's IP address and use the dropdown box from "Resolve" to "Find Members"

Yeah, I used some common sense that having more than one account is probably not allowed here, but don't want to take action against the member until I was sure :P

The IP address is shown on each user''s post (on the top right corner of the post) <_<

Good catch xboxrulz. I should have used the IP lookup tool earlier to see if he had more than two accounts.

So guys, what's the jury's decision here? Should we just kill two of his accounts (the two with the least amount of credits)?

Forbidding multiple accounts isn't stated in our forum rules. Members can make multiple accounts if they wish. However, out of those multiple accounts only ONE gets to be HOSTED group. This is implied with, "one hosting per person"--vague, I know.

Why allow multiple accounts? Well, if a member becomes banned or warned and he/she is serious about hosting with AstaHost admin's standard reply is to signup for another account and start from the beginning.

Let's see what else...oh, if you suspect multiple users from the same IP, please notify admins for they can use ACP to see if the same IP was used by multiple members. This tools goes deeper than Moderator's IP Address Look-up Tool (found under My Control, lower left hand side).

If you use Moderator's tool but cannot find the ISP name or the location, use NIC.COM (forum's default IP search) to see WHOIS. If you find that it may be a proxy service/server please red-flag it to admin. Carbon copy to all admins just in case one admin does not get to it first.

Thank you AstaHost staff! You guys are doing a great job! <_<

On a similar note, I know that trap17 accounts and astahost accounts can't be linked to share credits right now. Is that going to change possibly in the near future? I'm curious because when I first found the Xisto forums I found trap17 and was referred to asta by OpaQue (for some tutorials I ought to finish up, actually). So I still have a lot of credits over at trap17 that are never used. I know there used to be several members in the same boat. Haven't seen many of them around lately, but I have been on far less frequently. I don't mind not getting those credits, and I understand it would be difficult to set up a method to share credits across the two sites. but it would be nice if the accounts could somehow be linked. Or maybe just a credit transfer through the bank kind of thing.

I think we should just kick 2 of his accounts, let him apply if he qualifies. Then if he gets kicked, he can start a new account. I think that's a better idea. Having 2 accounts is just illogical and usually people do that to spam the board.

It's going to be too hard to do that now. That means that both forums must have a parent MySQL "block" in the database. Plus, IPB was never built to read accounts from other databases, it will take a lot of tinkering to get two forums together.

Aren't the credits separate from the IPB MySQL database though. I thought they were, in which case the transfer thing might not be too difficult. Otherwise, you're right, it probably would be too hard. Although, it might be possible to have an outside script that can read both databases handle a transfer between the two even if the credits are internal to the IPB database.

I'm pretty sure it is, because if it wasn't, how on Earth does the credit system know how to jump the credits if it doesn't read the data from the IPB database? It's going to be really hard to do it without an IPB data reader.

Hosting credits between two forums are not transferable. Unless OpaQue changes his mind in the future (reason I'm saying this is that he can change his mind at any time <_<) transfer will never happen.

Forum accounts are never deleted. This is not only to keep and track who has been spamming and which IP range brings spammers the most, everything is kept in a record for admins' necessary search.

ok then, so only things Xisto deletes are hosting accounts then? I assume.

Deleting hosting accounts, as in terminating hosting account so that web hosting for a member is no longer exists? Yes.

Furthermore, Xisto--the corporate--does not have any control over our forums. Only admins of this forum have the authority. OpaQue is the only exception. Admin(s) from Trap17 do(es) not have any authority over this forum either. I am the only exception, however, I am here to be the backup of OpaQue for hosting account supports. Thus I present all cases and appeal to veteran admins of AstaHost. <_< I can only suggest and recommend but do not have the final saying unless the decision making time is critical.

In a way moderators of AstaHost can directly effect hosting accounts. If you suspend or disable posting rights of a hosting member, he/she cannot earn new hosting credits. This eventually runs hosting credits down, rendering suspension of a hosting account. Powerful, huh?

I haven't seen the movie yet...but moderators were hand picked by admins because they will behave themselves. <_<

OK, I guess we will allow multiple accounts here then after all. I just hope that we have some system enforced here to keep track of all users hosted already by IP address. Just saying this because I'm sure we will forget about this user as time passes and you know that he/she will apply for hosting on their accounts.

   Thu Jun 28, 2007    Reply

Under your control, lower left, IP manage tool is available to see who else has been using the same IP. If all else fails admins have better control over searching IPs used under ACP.

I do not think there's reason to keep track of multiple accounts since only one gets to be hosted. And we terminate any multiple accounts immediately without warning since it's against our hosting AUP.

Sooner or later they all slip. I've caught over 20 account in Trap17 since I became an admin. They all get caught one way or another <_<
