Uhm I've been noticing that in a week my credits dropped from over 100 to 45. Can someone explain to me what happened? Because to my knowledge, I didn't delete my own posts, and I hardly think anyone here would go about deleting my posts - unless someone is not telling me. Which is ok - but then let another admin know.

My idea is : someone found the method *cough* to deduct credits.

just to check ... after making the PREVIOUS post my count dropped to 44.08..

I had the same problem a few days ago too, but it was very minor compared to yours. My credits gone done by 6 in 2 days. Maybe they're working on the credits script and it's messing up the credit counts.

well a week or two ago I was at 105... Now I am at 44 .. that's kinda sucky, to say the least.

Wait up a bit - there's some bug somewhere in the new credits system. It's happened to me too. I deleted about 30-40 posts in bulk from the SPAM forum and suddenly lost around 10 credits. And then - very funny - it shot back up by 4 again somehow. Something's seriously wrong. I've told this to Opaque, even twitch has - he's looking into it.

Keep a tab of all the lost credits here - they'll be restored ASAP.

Fortunately, I've only had a slight version of this problem, my count dropped by 1 whole credit (or there abouts) within an hour. Let's just hope that this bug can be splattered soon without too many other people noticing. Dealing with 8,000 screaming kids is like a nightmare come true.

THat's why I posted it here B) Because even though we can see it, they can see the title, they can't see the drop ;)

8 days later, there's no solution. While I am an admin, it's taking long. I know it's b!tching from me, but still - it looks bad for those that have noticed. I don't even think I get credits for posting LOL.

When I went to http://www.astahost.com/process/view_credit_bank.php to check a member's credits, it gave me back this message:

Does that help? Just a little bit? No?

Oh that message is quite common - most likely due to server overloads at a certain point of time. I've seen that many times, but it starts working again within minutes.

Oh. Well, then, nevermind.
(OMG, ms^e had the power to double post with just a single post!)

This might be a little off-topic, but it's still a little related, so if anyone wants to move this, they can do so. Anyway...
If I understand the new credits counter correctly, it recalculates the amount of credits a post is worth, right? The older the post, the less credit it's worth, right? And if the post is too old, its credit is always 0 no matter what you do to it, right? Well, if a member does something in his post to get a lot of credits, but we couldn't find it soon enough to correct it, do the credits have to be manually removed?

   Thu Mar 2, 2006    Reply

Yeah - in such a case they've to be manually removed. Nevertheless such posts are rare - as with all you guys watching over like hawks, there's seldom a nasty spam that slips through. All of them get caught soon or sooner :o I don't think the "sooner or later" situation ever comes to be.

   Fri Mar 3, 2006    Reply

to get back to MY original statement .. I went from slightly over 100 credits to 38 (while posting to keep it above 40)

   Sat Mar 4, 2006    Reply

Heh, so that would explain why I'm now at negative credits. As you guys know, I haven't been very active lately, sorry aout that, but I thought I would have at least 1 or two credits left, instead of neg 14. Not too big of a problem for me, but it is interesting. Do we know why there was a change in the credits script. Becuase this was pretty sudden, and I didn't think the script was set for any changes recently. Oh well, expect to see more of me in the near future, and I hope we can resolve this issue nicely.

Maybe, becuase things like this seem to happen more frquently than we'd like, it would be possible to mkae some sort of log mechanism for the credits script (OpaQue, hint hint( to track reductions, so when things like this occur we can do more than say, woops our bad, the script works again, but we have no record of the drop so we can't give you credits back, that way we could keep members happier.

This may not be a bug actually.

While testing the new credit system after the upgrade at Trap17, I noticed that the credit system worked too well.
I mentioned it to OpaQue at the time but his answer wasn't what I was hoping for.

The old system, if posts were deleted in certain ways, it wouldn't reduce credits. If a topic was deleted, the credits system didn't work. Each person's post had to be deleted one at a time and as a result, any credits earned were deduced. Then an Admin would have to delete the final post (topic starter) and manually adjust the credits for that one.

Now if you delete a topic, everyone active in the topic automatically looses credits. Not the amount earned for their posts. They lose double or triple what they earned. Can't remember if the penalty is 2 or 3 times the amount earned.

As a result, we as staff may have replied to topics that were pruned recently. Moonwitch would have been affected the most since she tends to be the most strict. :o

So my suggestion to everyone is to delete bad topics and use the warning system to interact with spammers. Replying to a bad topic will hurt just as bad as posting a bad topic from now on. Also encourage the members to not reply to bad posts but instead report them to us.

Since age matters when we edit our posts, I want to know this: Does the age of a post affect how many credits it's worth when it is deleted?
How is a post counted when it is being deleted? Is it counted by the length of the text before it was deleted? Is the date of post included in the formula? What if we were to edit a post so that it includes 0 strings of text? Then, how much credits would it deduct if it were deleted?

And I guess I wasn't affected as much as moonwitch because I don't reply to those topics. I just move them to the [Moderated Posts] section and warn the member.

Since I'm not exactly sure on the nature of the problem, I wanted to bring this to the admin's attention:

Burgin (3/6/06 4:49 pm) -- Hi all you moderators, could you please delete one of my tutorials please, i accidently thought it didn't post the topic and made a new one. So now theres two, just delete the reflections tutorial please. Thanks!

I have moved the offending tutorial to the spam and moderated posts section of the staff forum, still marked as invisble. Since I don't know whether simply deleteing the post will remove credits, or afect others, or what not, I am not touching it further. Also, I did not approve his first edition, since it is one of those grpahic tutorials where the text and everything is one big picture, and I thought we didn't like those but I wasn't sure.

If you wanted to be nice to a member and cut him or her a break, you could edit the post to a smaller size prior to deleting it.

If a member double posts a topic I suggest merging the two topics then editing it down to one.

I don't know about the age thing. I wasn't aware that the age of the post influenced the credits in any way when it is edited or deleted.

This new credit system provides the members with a lot more freedom in editing their posts and does a better job of awarding credits properly. I also takes away some of the burdens of the staff from the past. There are a lot of things we as staff could do with the new system that we couldn't before. If you truely understand how the new credit system works you can manipulated more than before. As a result while our duties may have lessened with the new system, our responcibilities have increased. Just remember, when we delete or edit a post, the action is logged. Deleted posts end up in the trash bin to be cleaned out by the Admins. So if you try to abuse the system, there will be evidence. :o

If I was to delete a double topic, here is what I would do:
OPTION 1:
Merge the two posts and edited the resulting post to show only the wanted material.

OPTION 2:
Edit the unwanted post to nothing but a small note explaining whay you are editing the post then delete the post.

Remember, double posts and posts where the user replied to his own posts are automatically combined. Just edit out the unwanted parts for those.

Is there a tutorial or expanation of the new credits system I missed? cuase it seems to me that there are several changes I'm not awqare of, the only one I'm aware of is the partial problem for us mods and that I seem to be getting more credits than usual.

There isn't a tutorial. The only changes I know regarding the new credit system can all be found here. I learned about the new system on Feb 23, when ms^e sent me this pm:

QUOTE

No need to adjust credits anymore - if Opaque's script is working properly, her credits should have been adjusted as soon as you quoted the content out. The the credits system recalculates credit upon editing of the post.

I didn't even know it had to do with the credits trouble until vujsa pointed it out. So, you didn't miss out much.

Oooh, sorry, I just deleted a spam post of one of our members, but I forgot to put a note in it before deleting it. I'll remember to do so next time. (It's much easier psychologically to delete posts now, since now I know that the actions will be logged.)

So - I lost a shitload of credits for doing my job? Wonderful.... Yeah I am pissed off now, it would have been nice to actually hear this slightly sooner, or at least have a post about the new system in the staff section. I lost 2/3 of my credits, not because I spammed, not because I cursed or plagged, I lost most of my credits because I DID MY JOB! Swell.... (In case it is not obvious, I am very angry)

   Wed Mar 8, 2006    Reply

That's probably why the loss of credits appeared inter-dependant. What I don't understand is that when m^e and I were testing the moderating of posts, whenever I editted someone's post (removed or changed content) my credits were not affected directly, as we had thought.

   Thu Mar 9, 2006    Reply

Anyhow, I've cooled off - talked to OpaQue and he gave me back the credits and a shitload more. At this point I want to add - if a mod here or admin loses credits due to deletion of posts in a topic that got moderated, please pm me and I will give you what you lost :o Fair is fair. Alright?

I've found that when we edit a member's post, the text inside our NOTE gives some extra credits, although it doesn't count as much as normal text. Would it be possible to create a new tag like [nocredit] that makes everything inside worth nothing? Can the credit system be manipulated like that?

   Fri Mar 17, 2006    Reply

That's a pretty good idea, although it would have to be heavily scripted? I don't know... I would donate some credits, but I'm at a pretty low number too (-300 lol)

Umm.. hate to bring this one out of its respectful slumber, but I just lost at least 5 credits in a day for a reason I can't comprehend. I don't think one of my posts was deleted, and I haven't edited anyone's posts lately except to add quote tags. I'm not really upset (even though I'm negative again after just reaching positive) but I'm curious. Could this be related to the recent SQL Injection? I doubt it since that is over and I just lost the credits. Any explanantion would be welcome.
