As pyost said, Google PR (Page RANK) is based on inbound links. This, increases your prestige.
But there is also another thing. A school of thought is now that Google PR is also based on QUALITY. The variables on which this act may be similar to the credits system at this site, or they could even be more sophisticated. But whatever it is, it is something that other SE (search engines) have not utilized.
The point is that you should tweak your pages from time to time, and check how your ranking for various keywords changes. But if you're scoring highly on a couple of SEs and not on others.... don't sweat it. SEs regularly change their ranking algorithms. Those pages of yours that don't come up in the first page on Google today may very well be tomorrow's #1. As long as your pages offer solid content for your visitors, sooner or later the SEs will pay you your dues
I have also read that bylinking to other sites, it can decrease you page rank, e.g. if you like to a site with a high page rank, it ok, but if you link to a site with a page rank of 0, then ou get less 'points' aswell.
Also, if a site with high page rank links to your site, you get some extra points. I think updating your site (and adding pages) has some influence on you PR also, but I'm not sure.
It's very complicated. Google it up and you'll find a load of page long articles.
Now a major question is that where to find a website that will link to your site. There are different strategies, may be known to you also. I can suggest one for you.Type link: <CurrentlyTopRankingSitesName> to find out the sites that they are linked with. And then you have to approach those webmasters with the request to link back to your site. Sometimes it works. So far as your listing in Google, I think, the linking is playing the key role. So promote your site harder and increase your link popularity. That way it will definitely improve.
Regards,
Sid
Would the same rules apply ie, referral from another website, in order to increase page ranking or do blogs follow another pattern?
This whole page rank thing kind of confuses me...

How To Increase Your Google Page Rating ?
You can post a link you your site on random bulletin boards, like so:
<a href="thedignityofstruggle.Blogspot.Com">The Dignity of Struggle<a/>
Or instead of titling the link the title of your page, title a link a word or phrase you think people might search on google, like so:
<a href="thedignityofstruggle.Blogspot.Com">Live without money</a>.
These links increase your page ranking far more than keywords will.

The company I worked for used to make a hundred mini sites all with different content in them and different keywords similar to the ones for the main site and each mini site would have 2-3 links to the main site. I had the labourious job of writting the content for the sites and it is not that easy to come up with 100 different contents all on the same subject each and every one of them different!!
no meta keywords or description tag will help you with page rank.
My website was rank 0 until I 'spammed' other related forums with my link in the signature. Believe it or not that's the best way to build your outbound links, and it's free too
Greetings, shotgun.
In general, to raise your pagerank, try to get others to link to your church's website. This will usually happen if the website has a lot of useful information on it. It will also help you more if the sites that link to you have relatively high pagerank. So, if one of your church members has a high profile blog and they linked to your site, it would definitely help drive up pagerank (as well as traffic).
You can also attach the church website in a forum signature (make sure the forum has high pagerank and is related to your church or churches in general in some way), make many many posts, and hope your pagerank increases. You could create forum posts about it too, assuming that you're making relevant and not spammy posts. Try posting the link to some blogs in comments whenever relevant. All the little things count.
At the same time, I'm not sure exactly why you want to raise the Google pagerank for a church website. You're not trying to attract visitors from all over the web, because there's no way they'd be able to attend your church unless by some stroke of luck they happened to live near the area. If you wanted to raise church membership, it's probably better to stick to local events instead of web-based ones. The website is better off just for your own current members.
Either way, good luck!
- A link from another real website increases my website's PageRank.
- The more quality pages (with good content) in my website, my website's PageRank increases.
The algorithm for Google PageRank is a little complex, and I don't understand it completely.

While having a big page rank is more about the back links rank, appearing higher in search results has more to do with the number of the links. The rank of a site will decrease when that site is linking to many sites, especially when one site is linking to many irrelevant sites, or when linking to lower ranked sites.

How do I increase Google Rating?
Ok, I'll jump in. I started Adsense about 6 weeks ago and tried to improve my website with content, keywords and links. All four of my sites still have PR=0, and the last week my traffic/CTR has dropped to almost nothing. I'm quite discouraged, especially because I truly believe in my causes and the sites look great - to me, anyway. I have a blog for each, also, with no comments other than my own! It's so lonely out there in cyberspace. And get this for content, two sites present a new stat theorem that revolutionizes statistics (in perhaps a small but serious way), and one of them actually, truly, believe it or not, ferrets out the errors in Einstein's stuff and gives the right answers! Alas... :) Well, hope you don't mind if I list the sites, do go there and learn something, because these are small but beautiful sites!

It turns out it's actually quite time consuming to try to get your site rating up in Google, but I suppose that's actually a good thing if you want to be able to trust Google's results. I have to admit, though, that it's odd to search your own name and find that references to your name on your site are lower ranked than obituaries with similar names. :)

Hey. My church website is http://www.cedarvalley.ca (Cedar Valley Mennonite Church) but it's not #1 on Google Search--yet it is on Altavista/Yahoo!. How come? And how can I make it so that it is? P.S. I have many spellings/variations on the name in the meta tags. Any suggestions?Link: view Post: 72304
The first thing to do to get rated by google is to submit your website to google. If you never your site to google how will google know that you ever existed. So the first thing is to submit your website to google.
The second thing is what you cannot control much. It is the competition of the keywords around which your website is designed. For example the keyword "Earn money online" Is a very competitive keyword and their are tens of thousands of websites about it. So if the main keyword of your website is the same then you have to be patient. With time the google will start respecting you and then it will increase your ranking. I will give you my personal example. My website www.mananatomy.com had a few pages and I hardly got 5 visits per day. Because of my exams and other business I could not add content to my website for about 4 months. So the content and pages of my website remain constant but after all the time has passed and the content and pages constant, today I get more than 150 visits a day. The reason is that as my website is getting older and older google is increasing its respect and guiding more and more traffic to my website. So there are a number of factors you need to keep in mind to make your website rank high in google search rank. And you also need to know that time is an important factor and those who say that time does not matter may have not much experience with google.

Re: How to increase your Google PR scoreHow To Increase Your Google Page Rating ?
That's good to know, because I have come across other websites whose code wasn't as well written, had less content and the content it had was (mostly) poorly written and super short, and yet they have a much higher PR score! Makes me think that something underhanded is going on. Thank you, for giving me hope!

Each and every field has its own weak points. Few years ago the respect of a webpage was calculated from the meta tags of the page, the title of the page and the magnitude of the number of links to a page etc. When these rules got exploited by people then new rules and algorithms were established. So the thing is going on and on and on. Search engines are continuously making new and new algorithms and webmastes are continuously trying to exploit the weaknesses of the algorithms to get benefit in short time and effort. When the exploiters succeed the search engines move a step further ahead and the exploiters follow them. This race is going on and I think it will keep going on until a very hard to exploit system is developed.
Replying to BeefdipIt's important to remember submission to directories dedicated to churches. They have link value in googles terms and competing church websites are often doing the same thing.Find both the big ones (those will be at the top of google search terms for church directory) and the lesser known ones deeper down the search results example: http://www.Christianchurchlist.Com/p/church-submission.HtmlI hope that helps

This means that only interesting links add value to your website, link to spamming sites will have negative effects.
