As a moderator if I saw a bad post, I'd delete it unles it would disrupt the discussion. I would then look up the rest of the users posts and do the same with their other junk posts. If there was a large number of junk posts, say more the 60%, I'd warn the member as well. On occassion, I'd even suspend the members account but this was usually only for plagiarism and spamming! I'm not the super active staff member that I used to be but as soon as I see a problem, I deal with it in its entirety.

This process was usually restricted to posts in topics that I was active in or in responce to a member complaint or post report. As a result, the forums I frequently read are in pretty good condition and the forums that the other staff members are regularly active in are also in pretty good shape but there are some forums that could easily be renamed "trash"!

I just spent about 45 minutes dealling with posts over the last 6 weeks from a member that had 59 posts and maybe only 10 of them were even near being acceptable! Most had fewer that 25 words in them! The only reason I'm sure that this guy went undetected for so long is because of the topics he was active in.

Anyhow now that I'm an Admin, I see more problems than before. I found the guy above when I did his hosting application. I found another guy as well. It would be helpful if we can catch problem members sooner as it will keep us from having to delete a bunch of junk and it can give the member a chance to fix their mistakes before it is too late for them.

So my request is that we all try to remove as much junk as possible before it becomes a fad.

When a new member goes to a topic and sees a bunch of one liners, he is more likely to post a one liner. He assumes it is okay to make small posts because other members have done it! The fewer small posts we have here the less likely we are to get more. We don't have to "warn" the member for every little issue but send them a PM if there is a possible problem brewing.

Most of the time if you contact the idiot member and let them know that they need to change their ways, they will comply!

I have my personal rule: 1st post = spam, BAN. 2 one liners in a row, PM with warning. 3 one liners in a row = BAN. 3 consecutive warning in 1 day = BAN.

Nip it in the bud, I think. A member can create another forum ID if he/she is serious about joining our forum. But to start badly is unacceptable.

And then there are borderlines... few posts good and can be improved. That's when I PM a member to encourage quality posting, not quantity. Many of them do comply.

We (at least I know myself and a couple other mods) do indeed attack crappy posts on a regular basis to keep the boards clean, however some will always slip through the cracks. I don't know about you but I dont have enough free time to review every single post made on the board so obviously we won't notice some as soon as they occur. Luckily we seem to catch most quite quickly either just by catching them or via the report this topic thing.

The forum was down during almost two days. No way posting, got SQL errors. So I could not post. However, I lost credits, this was probably the case for everybody. Fortunately, only the astahost forum was down, all the hosted databases worked fine. Thanks for that, my site was never down. ...more
