Hello and welcome to my tutorial, I’m going to teach you how to make realistic fire!!!!

this is how I figured it out, I was makeing smoke in photoshop one day, but i wanted color to be added to it, so I added some color balance to it and ""click"" it hit me.... it looked alot like fire.

--I would rate this tutorial easy and on a scale from 1 to 10 of difficulty, I would say a 3

--this is how I did it.

1. first I started with a blank page.. duh
it doesn't mater what the size is but I used 400 X 400 pixels

2. Ok, we got our blank document now were going to select the fill tool and fill the layer black.
3. Now grab the elliptical marquee tool and make and oval like the image below.
step2.jpg

4. Now fill the oval with white. After it is filled click select --> deselect or ctrl + D

step3.jpg

5. Here is where it gets rockey if you haven't got the above steps down well your in trouble, anyways select the smuge tool then make shore that the brush size is at 50px and hardness is at 50%. Click and hold your cursor in the black part of the image and with a medium speed sweep across the white oval. Repeat as many times as needed but leave a gap big enought for your brush. you should end up with a image like this

step4.jpg

6. Ok I hope your still with me. Now with the smuge tool go over the gaps that we skiped in the same direction, and hopefuly you get a result alot like this

step5.jpg

7. step 7 is not any differant than step 5 and step 6. Take the smuge tool and repeat the same thing you did in step 5 and hopefuly you get this

step6.jpg

8. from what you have now you can contune the pathern if it don't look right or you can go ahead and color it.
9. now click Layer--> color balance and a window should open up..... now put the below settings in
I WANT YOU TO PLAY AROUND WITH THIS because the settings I have wont be the same setting that you need
step7.jpg

step8.jpg

step9.jpg

after you played around with the setting you should have this

step10.jpg

you can also make it any color you want if your looking for a differant look;

this is what I made from the above image... All I did was cange the brush size a little bit to make the fire thinner.
step11.jpg

and thats it I hope you liked this tutorial if you have any questions you can pm me or e-mail me from the link at my web site

:P Happy painten :P

Very nice! I was having trouble at first because I made the oval in a new layer. It needs to be on the same layer as the black background for the color adjustments to work. I ended up recording the action so I can flameify (new word) anything. I played around with it some more and came up with a blue flame effect. I added some smoke and text and voila, nice little text-effect. Here it is:

This is what I've made. Add some grey in the middle of the smudged white blob to have this nice little darker effect in the middle. Just place a black dot and smudge evenly all through. This is the tip frm me.

And hey I had tried more than 2 hrs to make fire effect LOL!! This one is really cool.

Wow, I'm gonna sound like a douchebag by giving the first negative comment...

It's not very realistic, if you have photoshop7 or higher:

1. Create a small white sphere with the Marquee tool on a black background
2. Use the wind filter (filter>stylize>wind) 3 or 4 times
3. Use the gaussian blur tool (filter>blur>Gaussian)
4. Rotate 90 degrees with the Free Transform tool (ctrl+t)until flames are facing upward.
5. Use the warp tool in the liquify menu (ctrl+shift+X mess with it a bit)
6. After you've got it to the way you want, click okay.
7. Finally, create a new layer and set it to overlay, color the flame however you wish!

Ta-the, this is also kinda based on your photoshop talents, but I have faith in you all :D

Words and fire

How did you get the fire behind your text like that. Did you just create the fire in one layer and add your text in another layer and lay them on top of eachother?

How do people know how to do these things? Do people experiment with these or something?

   Wed Oct 8, 2008    Reply

You can also try other shapes, to smudge/blur. You can get different flame like effects. Then duplicate the layer and apply some motion blurs with gradient masks, transparent Gaussian blurs. When you think you have something hot do some large Gaussian Blurs for glow with different colors. Also if you like a particular flame or don't like repeatable work you can also mirror a copy and apply some transforms to it. Yup kool! Don't for get to add little flecks of amber rising from the flame. I might have to try this one on GIMP.

What I would like to simulate about fires. Is the random distortions from heat waves without looking too artificial.

;)

Wow, i'm going to try this as soon as possible. Thanks!

That does sound pretty good. I would think you could attempt it at many different levels too... Maybe instead of the black and white you could gradient a flame and blaze combination of red to yellow and then smudge it... but the concept is still there... I would think once you start to work on it then you may want to make it it's own layer... You could start customizing any background or anything once you take it from the black backing...

I like the tutorial, though... It looks good and it is a good start to make any kind you would like...

As for the posting a few above... Some people will experiment with anything in their mind... Think of how something is made up and try to create to the best of your ability... I just try to create what I think of the best that I can... Trial and error... and soon anyone can start adding their own creations to tutorial for others to enjoy! And now adays, anything is possible!

Nice tutorial, my brother wants to learn photoshop so this will be alot helpful for him. I am just wondering can you export GIF images with photoshop? because my brother wants to make a candle, he wants the small flame on its top to look realistic and moving. If you can export GIF images, how much frames do you suggest for the flame animation to look realistic?

This is a pretty cool tutorial. I will be needing these things more and more as I go along. Starting after this semester I plan to start getting into graphics design.

THANK YOUHow To Make Realistic Fire!

I am a beginner in photstock and have conquered the basics, layers, color that kind of thing, but the creative part is HARD to say the least. Yours is the first tutorial I have been able to follow and create what you did. Loved it and not that hard after I did it a few times. I even made flaming TEXT.

I do video ripping and editing. I want to create an ID for my work (like production / film makers just right before the movie starts the animated ID appears, e.g, paramount, lionsGate, etc.) - an animation ID. I'm looking what tools to use for animating very nice FONTS and effects. Is there 3d fonts i can get from? and graphical effects i can apply too?

Can you?How To Make Realistic Fire!

Ok I got a problem with the fire that no one can figure out and I'm just curious to see if you might know. I want to make the fire without having to be on the same layer as the black background. This will give me the ability to do whatever I want with the fire. The thing is I cant colorize the fire right without the black since white is already all colors and black is not. The black from what ive seen is where the color comes in. I can cut it out but the fire does not look right anymore if I do that. Do you know of a way that this can be done?

Set layer to screen when done...This will take out the black.

Use a mask to remove the black background! How To Make Realistic Fire!

Have you tried doing a reverse mask?

Create a mask for your flames-on-black layer, select all and copy the flame layer, then switch over to the mask (hold down alt and click on the mask thumbnail) paste to the mask and then switch back. Sometimes you have to invert the mask to get it to hide the right areas, and you may need to play with the levels or contrast in the mask a bit, but it should work to mask out the black background and make the flames a bit translucent too.

Not a member, so you can get back to me at deviantArt; just do a search for avmorgan...
