I'm kinda new to the game programming language and I need an idea for making a game to post on the internet. Do any of you guys have any tips for me?

Depends on what type of game you want to develop , for me I always wanted to make a big Online world before even MMORPGs started to exist ... too bad i didnt register the idea as a patent :P

anyways making a Huge Online World built on a new enviroment and charcters i think is kinda stupid , I mean if you build a world arround a popular movie or story book or even an older series of games would be very very attracting ...

currently I am developing a simple arcade car racing system that could be used for almost all types of 3D arcade racers

Sorry I didn't help much but you gotta add more details .

just wondering how old you? more than 50+???

back to topics
you need a group members to built a unique best games.
if you want to build A++ games just for fun, be sure you have an A+ video card :o
also playing more games as you can from old nintendo to the latest releases in pc, and observe every thing about those games. from there you will have lot's of ideas about building games :o
and joining a community of games progz will help you alot :P

I also suggest MMORPGs. Most of the famous games on the internet(free or not) are in that genre. With free games on the internet, have a game similair to runescape(runescape.com). If you want to make a p2p game, make one like Everquest.(Gigantic worlds alot of quests) For both situtations, I suggest that you have a team with you. It will be next to impossible to make a good one just by yourself.

no , I am not 50 ... i am 22

10 years ago such a game would have been a dream ..... dont sound like a smart ass while u know nothing

Seriously, man! MMORPG's seem to have just sprung up recently. It's like PHP or ASP, etc. A few years ago, that would have been a fantasy to have automatically generated pages. But now, there are message boards, portals, and all other kinds of automatically generated pages!

Anyways, back to the subject. I would suggest just finding games in the genre you are thinking of creating and playing those for ideas. Or, like Hellfire said, assemble a team to help you, and have the team help you with an idea. I'm sure someone who's actually helping with the game would be more motivated to come up with good ideas than just someone who feels like coming up with an idea for the heck of it.

really, MMORPGs have been around for.....a long long time. They just didn't have the fancy graphics, and had shorter acronyms like MUD or MUSH. The idea has been around for a while. If you wanted to make a MMORPG, going the text based route of a MUD or MUSH would be easier, much much much easier. There are also very good programs out there to do it. Even if you do plan on going down the graphics route, I suggest you start with a MUD, the time spent learning how to make a good one will pay off triple when you try to build the big complex one with graphics.

MMORPG can be created with a lot of engines. For example Flash, 3D MAX, Java, PHP... It all depends on what type you want. And you definitely must have a team or else you will take forever(even working 24 hours daily wun work...)

hey mate,
build a game around one of your interests. as you can tell, anything can be a game (look at the sim series). perhaps something creative and original. given recent tv shows, what about a csi style game? or one based upon music? sea monkeys? building a reality tv show? ... and so forth. really, the ideas are endless.

my point ... be creative and step beyond the obvious.

cheers,
hashbang

I beg to differ. If you're smart enough and have both the time and resources to devote to the project, you may be able to work on it alone, depending on what kind of a MMORPG you're trying to create here. Plus, you can consult various sources and not necessarily have them on your team, i.e. working with you at every step of the way.

I'm one of Shal's "various sources."

Indeed, you are. ^_^;; But yeah, not many of our friends know php, eh? I've asked... like... EVERYONE I KNOW, and nobody seems to know anything about it. Which sucks when it comes to something technical and not something I can pick out logically.

Who said PHP or Java was logical? HTML, Basic, C++...good languages. They're based in reason. But JAVA SUCKS! It's so freaking illogical!!! I can't get it to work half the time and the other half it does the opposite of what I expect. But HTML makes sense. BASIC really makes sense (hence the name). C is a bit abstract but still makes more sense than PHP.

   Tue Dec 7, 2004    Reply

PHP is very logical, actually. I mean, if someone like me can understand coding in PHP, then it's gotta be really, really logical.

Or, ya know, just plain BASIC. XD But seriously, PHP is very logical. I'm just having a brain fart here, and don't know why my login thingy isn't working. >_>

I never was really good with PHP. I mean as good as I am with Basic, C or HTML. But I never really got PHP. And I really don't get Java. I guess things never lined up as well. I never did like that $ thingie.

   Tue Dec 7, 2004    Reply

Well then you should learn more php and java, eh? Maybe brush up a bit on more basic topics, as well.

   Tue Dec 7, 2004    Reply

I need a place to do that. Geocities hates me now...too many Java Applets floating around? Maybe...heh. Yeah. Just a few more posts...maybe I'll make a game too...

   Tue Dec 7, 2004    Reply

Yeah, that's fine, as long as you don't steal my idea. >_> 'Cause that would be pretty eeeeeeeevil of you.

I'm quite curious, what exactly is a MMORPG? I don't think anyone said what exactly it is. If it is explained then show me a quote. Because I'm a bit confused. Is it a game engine or something else.

MMORPG stands for Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. Basically, it is the style of game a la Everquest, WoW, Shadowbane, and so on. In these games, unlike other computer RPGs, there is no 'plot'. Instead, things are player driven. There are alse quests: missions NPCs give the player to do for experience, loot, reputation, or other such rewards that generally make the character more powerfull.

Now, the main point of these gamse strikes me as a sort of socialized hampster wheel for people to waste time on. Sort of like getting stoned and hanging out, only less introspective, and over the internet.

i think i've posted before but the NEW FASHION are not just MMORPGS or MMOGs

it's PRESISTANT worlds ... changing contents everyday and so on .. example : City of Heroes ...

you go to the website to read some NEWS about stuff happening inside the game ...

example :

Today the Xeno ALIENS invaded The TV headquarters ,, when u log in the game , you will find the aliens invading ( Comptuer AI or Other human players ) and wars starts and so on

this is so FUN but the only problem is you pay for the game and for ths subscription since singleplayer suck .

Firstly, what kind of skills do you have? C++, java? etc.. If have the neccsary skills, i would suggest you start off with a simple flash game, or a web-based internet game. After that, you could progress, and start making your own mini 2D RPG Games( not online ), so that you could learn from the process. When you have all the neccsary skills, i would suggest you form a team and make a MMORPG ( Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game ) , and that is what many Indie Game development companies are doing now. They gather team members from various forums. Do keep in mind a game is not easy to make! You can visit www.gamedev.net for more info and the forum is very helpful there too :P.. the website have lots of game developing info and i think it will give u all the idea u need :)

cheers .. my 2 cents :)

i agree. worlds that aren't static and the same day in and day out are popular because there's always something new happening, something new to do other than killing the same old monsters, checking for the same old rares, xping till you reach the highest levels etc.

one of things i've always liked and wished it was implemented in the games i play is to have monsters regularly invading player cities and having players work together to ward off the invasion. what'd keep this idea novel is to have different monsters all the time or a mix, and involve storylines.

Although i never created a game myself.... i think it would be fun.... and a good idea for a expert programmer is a game similar to halo style game... halo i presonally think is a great game.... but i bet it would be kinda hard to make... or another idea would be to make a game similar to super mario or games in that nature.... super mario is one of the greatest games of all time... i would like to see someone make a good game simialar to this...

Well I've always been wanting a MMORPG with an open-ended economy... For instance, like in World of Warcraft to make a sword you need so many iron bars, so many gems of this type etc... I want an MMORPG where if I want to make a sword i can just take an iron bar, a few gems of my choosing, and make a sword that is completley different than anybody elses. Thats an open-ended economy.

You could change the world of gaming with something like that!
