Disclaimer: I do not applaud piracy, but I do feel people should have access to their personal files, regardless of whether Windows has expired or not. This tutorial should not be used to bypass Windows Activation, nor does it restore full Windows functionality, but I provide it to those who are in desperate need of accessing files that are suddenly lost to them through the Microsoft Genuine Advantage activation system.

[Update: some say it works even better with Vista, as the explorer.exe does not close shortly after you try to open it as it does in XP. Unconfirmed.]

I just came across this interesting tutorial. By now, everyone is familiar with Windows XP's product activation to ensure that only one copy of XP is used on one computer or whatever Microsoft has in their license agreement. Well, if you don't activate in 30 days, your computer is "locked" and you can't access your files. What are your options? Well from Microsoft and other sources:

  1. You're screwed. (That's in POLITE terms)
  2. Re-install Windows and lose all your documents and things.
  3. Install another OS.
  4. Talk to a Microsoft Licensing person... sometimes they're nice and will accept your story.
Well, then I found this interesting tutorial. Since I think it is against your rights if Microsoft makes it impossible to get to your files (there are other ways), just disable product activation & grab your files. Burn them to CD or copy to a flash drive and then re-install XP. Yes, product activation is annoying, but you just have to go along with the flow.

NOTE: I believe that if you don't have internet access (or very limited access like you're charged per minute and you get limited minutes), you can call Microsoft to activate. You'll speak with a Microsoft Licensing person and they'll give you a code to activate Windows.

Anyways, here's the tutorial. Remember: I am NOT promoting piracy! Always pay for your software & activate it legally. Personally, I think activation is too harsh and should at least give you access to your files and the ability to transfer them off the machine.

http://tomorrowtimes.blogspot.com/2006/12/...ed-windows.html

TO THE MODS/ADMINS: I'm sorry if you think this violates the TOS. It's only ment to help those to save files they really need from expired Windows. Microsoft cannot deny access to your files. That's like being locked out of your car simply because you didn't change the oil after 3000 miles...

Well if anyone is using an older verison of XP (i.e. a copy of XP that was NOT produced after May 2005) then retrieving files isn't a hassle. However, if a version of XP expired and is running a more recent version of WPA, then you're up the creek. In older versions, users can still log in to windows so that they can activate it. Of course this also gives the user time to retrieve all of their files. In more recent versions, windows WPA will not let you log in until you have successfully activated your copy of windows. In this case, Safe Mode will not be of any use. For more recent versions, the only option is to copy files from a networked computer (doesn't always work) or to install another OS and copy the files from there (doesn't always work due to permissions).

wait! don't reinstall! i know a way in...strictly for emergency use...not continuous use!!

go to a diff computer and make a bootable floppy by right-clicking on the 3 1/2 floppy drive and clicking format then select the bootable dos disk...or something of that nature. (i dont have a floppy drive)

then go online and download "NTFS for DOS" and put it on the floppy.

then boot into the floppy. it should ask you which NTFS partition you want to load.
Select the right one...then it should take you to a command prompt.

type in cd\
then cd windows
then cd system32
then copy logon.scr logon.bak
then copy cmd.exe logon.scr

(cmd=command prompt)
then reboot your computer and if you have your screensaver enabled...instead of the the screensaver loading it will load cmd.exe
Example: if you have your screensaver set to 5 min....then in 5 min it will run cmd.exe instead of the screensaver....
then at the command prompt type in explorer
that should load windows without having you register or login
good luck

or if that is too hard...plug in your backup source (external Hard Drive) then load NTFS for DOS from the disk...and then copy using DOS....either way...it should do what ur look'n for

let me know if this works...or if u have any other questions

Good tips there guys, it's wrong in the first place for microsoft to disallow access to your own hard drive (in a way) if your windows copy hasn't been activated. It would be better if we start seeing some of the more advanced features disabled if your windows copy 'expires' in some way. For example you get access to internet explorer, cd burning programs and hard drive access. Other features such as running some programs could be disabled.
Seriously microsoft has to do something about this, you never know what kind of things can come up.

This is piracy. The activation procedure isn't troublesome at all for genuine users to have need to circumvent this.

In case you upgraded your motherboard you can call them to upgrade your key.

A large number of genuine users have their copy flagged as pirated. And Microsoft is NOT always helpful in getting you activated properly.

When I opened this toic, I was thinking "wow, windows XP can expire?" , but when I read the post, I was glad to find out that that just doesn't happen. I agree with Alegis when he stated that this is basically piracy, or encouraging it in some way by teaching someone how to get around activating a product that requires you to buy it and still using it all the while. Activating the software was not hard for me and believe me, I have extremely limited expirience with dealing with windows. If my copy ever gets flagged, I have the reciept from the location of purchase and I have the disk, manual and anything else that someone who purchased their copy of Windows XP should have, so there would not be many problems if they decided to take action against me.

Hopefully someone will use this guide for good purposes though!

Windows XP has always been a pain in the neck for me. I bought a HP laptop that came with a legal XP serial and installation disc, and when I re-formatted my laptop a year after I got it, I found that annoying activation popup kept popping up and it eventually wouldn't let me log into my own computer and I had to reformat it. Ugh, I understand what Microsoft is trying to do, but it makes it so difficult for those of us who actually get their software legally. I heard Vista is way up the wazoo with security measures (I'm going to pick up a copy from my school's computer center, I heard they're free for students ;) ) and give that a shot. I'm running Ubuntu linux at the moment, because my Windows 2000 installation caught a very nasty bug and completely corrupted all my files. Thankfully I had just made a backup (ALWAYS do periodic backups!). ;)

Thanks for posting the info above. I'm sure it'll come in handy for me once I get my laptop out and back in order. ;)

There is a way to get into windows XP after the product code key expires and you are basically locked out of your computer. Turn on your pc and when you get to the activation screen for microsoft MINIMIZE the screen (do not close it, minimize it). Press The windows key and U at the same time. Microsoft Narrator will come up. Press the connect to microsoft internet button (yeah, you have access to the internet). From there you can type in C:\ and get all your files will come up. Go to the Programs file and now open your exe files to open your programs. It works!!! This is just a way around using Windows XP not a solution. I was able to remove all of my files I needed and was happy!!! ;)

I have a legit version of Xp pro but when I log on it says I need to activate, after it checks it says my version is activated press ok to continue but it takes me back to the log on screen and the cycle continues.

Now the windows key changer doesn't work in safe mode so I need a way to get in normal mode in order to re enter the key.

Shouldn't Windows be activated when you purchase your computer from the manufacturer (e.g. Dell)? Unless you have some spyware running on your computer or that you upgraded 2 or more components, you don't need to manually activate Windows I don't think.

I think a better way to restore your files is just burn a Linux LiveCD and just access the NTFS partition on the system. It's a very clean way to retrieve your documents and such. This way, you won't get screwed over.

In Linux (Ubuntu at least), the C:\ drive is called sda1. Try browsing for it in /media/sda1, but an icon should be on the desktop if the Linux is a GUI. In the terminal/command-line, change directory to /media/sda1

That's only for SATA or SCSI drives. For ATA/UATA/PATA drives, you use /dev/hda1 (if your primary drive is your C:)

I agree that you should be able to recover your files even if it is expired. To non-activated users of Windows, backup your data weekly if you want to keep your files or you can use this guide. But remember, use this only for your data!

it is troublesome as I do have a legal code and it would not actervate, it wasnt running on any other computer so its not piracy if the code that you use (is legal) and would not actervate and I'm not paying s**t loads on the phone 2 microsoft 4 them to not tell me any thing.

Windows Activation LoopHow To Login To An Expired Windows Xp System

Now I have a Question I have a computer and I recently repaired windows xp with the repair tool on the xp disk.  Now, like always, it tells me I need to activate in order to use windows, so I click yes and it starts to get to the activation screen but then it automatically logs me out. I tied the "loop hole" you guys suggested but it wouldn't work.  It seems to be a registry error.  But my question is ,Is there a way to fix this problem or do I just need to backup the data and wipe it?

Legitimate instance where WPA need to be bypassed or postponed. How To Login To An Expired Windows Xp System

Replying to AlegisSituation: Legitimately licenced and activated system has major hardware failure (now obsolete motherboard) requiring new motherboard, cpu, and RAM.Issue: Major changes to this extreme will require a reactivation of windows after the operating system has been repaired to accept new hardware. Unfortunately, activation is required before logon can occur, I.E. Before all necessary hardware drivers and registry changes can occur. This major change will send the Windows Product Activation into an endless loop as it checks the hardware against the registry, which no longer "jives", sees a mismatch and requires a check of the hardware/registry hash.Result: Valid product and key, an inaccesable logon to a now corrupt system.Silver lining: You CAN access data to back it up by using safe mode (command prompt only) to bypass WPA and WGA. But that ,000 piece of custom application, that never got backed up, is history unless you can get Windows re-activated and drivers for that new hardware that was just installed to salvage the same. That is a LEGITIMATE reason to bypass the WPA WGA process temporarily. What takes several hours of hacking could be avoided if WPA allowed major changes to take place if only for an hour!

RE: HOW TO REALLY COPY FILES FROM EXPIRED XPHow To Login To An Expired Windows Xp System

after searching the web a bit I realized none of these answers were worth anyones time, why download prgms and all that crap, the answer has to be easier than that!! ...So a little fiddling around and I came across an easy solution to COPY FILES FROM EXPIRED XP TO EXTERNAL HD... Read on...

so after you are allowed to get into windows through the windows+U button, go to the webpage;

- type C: (access your computers hard drive)

- find a media file [music / video] --> open it with Windows Media Player

- in WMP go to FILE --> SAVE AS... ---> now in this newly opened explorer window find your file(s) that you want to copy and highlight those files, right click and COPY and then go to your destination [external HD / pendrive] and make a destination folder, and PASTE! boom, it's done.

these instructions should be fool-proof... Good luck.

I'm sorry (for) if this way or method was posted already.
The Internet connect that I currently in use was very slow in speed. :)

If a windows xp system was expired. One can login to it by using windows safe mode.
Before booting into the system, at the boot-up menu, press the F8 key on the keyborad.
A menu with several menu items show up on the screen.

By using the scrolling key (UP or DOWN) highlight one of safe mode menu item[1] and then press the enter key to
enable it and return back to the boot-up menu. Finally, Choose a windows xp system on which it needs to be logined into.

When system prompting for password[2]. Please enter the password of the local administator that is entered when the system was installed.

That's it.

p.s. Sorry for my poor english. I try my best to write it in correct grammer as possible.
Please feel free to correct my text in grammer in which they look unacceptable. Thanks !

[1] Selecting the safe mode with networking option may be much better than others. As it allowed users to activate the system by Internet connection.

[2] If welcome screen was enabled on the machine and the administrator account was not shown on it. Please press key Ctrl-Alt-Del twice to display the windows login box. Enter the name of the local administator if it has been renamed or simply enter "Administator" in the name box, and then type in it's password in the password box.

Is the piracy issue really causing Microsoft to go broke? . . . I think not!How To Login To An Expired Windows Xp SystemIn my never ending search for technical information, I came across this topic and the opinions expressed which prompted me to add my 2cents. I have used at one time or another all of the afore mentioned "workarounds" for the WPA(Windows Activation) as well as the WGA(Windows Genuine Advantage Tool)and each time I do I get a little more pissed! First of all let me state that Microsoft and Bill Gates are not going to go broke due to pirated copies of XP in the hands of all those "thieves" who have obtained an "illegal" copy. However, for those who have legally activated their copies and even installed the WGA tool, are you aware that each time you boot your WGA resident calls home to report in? That to me is a bit too invasive ! I mean, once you have "followed the legal procedures", and everything has been verified why does this WGA tool keep calling home to Microsoft? What are they doing with this information they are receiving? In fact what type of information are they receiving? Now what is more criminal using a pirated copy of XP, or violating your privacy and personal information rights??? C'mon Bill. . .If you are a true "philanthropist" as we the masses are told and in the true spirit of confidentiality . . .Do the right thing and quit questioning us about how, when, why, and where we got your product. You have given us a great piece of equipment with Windows . . .Now let us use it and get out of our machines!-reply by Slowtoker

I have a problem activating XP on a friends laptop, the laptop stopped working due to a faulty memory module, unfortunately one of his less technically minded friends thought the problem was a virus and completely messed it up.  Eventually the laptop got passed to me, I replaced the memory but by this time the windows installation was completely borked.  Luckily I have a windows XP oem disk (the Laptop has a genuine XP home oem license sticker on the bottom) great do a repair install and all should be well.  Ok so XP installs - likes the key on the sticker etc.  However It informs me that windows must be activated before I can log on, fine so I click yes... It makes a windows error sound then nothing - the system just hangs there, any idea what I can do - I'm happy to activate it as I know its all perfectly legal but I don't get any activation screen.

Solved permanentHow To Login To An Expired Windows Xp System

Replying to magiccode9 First, I don't applaud, nor do I support absolute piracy. However, if all you do is make an actual legal key properly activate on your system (effectively using a license you already own and electronically activate anyway), I can give you this tip. There's a crack floating around that will install a DLL file that hacks most oem and retail systems into thinking they are activated. Just make sure you start up in safe mode and do the following...First, I don't care if you are connected to the net or not. You'll need it later, but not now. You'll also need administrator access priveleges. For OEM moves to a new machine, you need a new key, and you need to give the install the same reg info ( name and computer name), but it may still hang on you. So follow the next steps.Put in a new blank HDD, and install a fresh copy of windows. Activate it over net or whatever and use a keyfinder to get all pertinent info (reg info) and write it out or print it or whatever. Now go to C>windows>system32 and grab wpa.Bak and wpa.Dbl and copy them to a thumb drive (This will identify the motherboard for the other install of windows). Remove the HDD, and place your old HDD into an external drive, connect it to a working comp, and place the two files we just moved into the same place in the old system (find the windows folder, find system 32, paste them there, overwrite the old, your system should now have a stable wpa to utilize during activation. Put the old OEM back in the machine.Generic steps:Start up in safe mode, and we'll have to remove WGA. First, open any folder and then go to tools, go to folder options. We want to show system files, show hidden files, and show extensions for known file types (this is the logic of what we want to see, not the wording of the options). Now open a search. Search for all files that have WGA in the name, and make sure to search system folders and hidden. You'll find 2 files, 1 DLL and 1 EXE (application). Open the containing folder for 1 of them, and they should be right next to each other. Rename the DLL and put .Bak at the end, deleting the .Dll; and now this file is neutral. Set the window small enough to see the exe and open a task manager window next to it. Find WGA Tray.Exe in the task manager and end the process, then quickly move to the folder window and delete the .Exe file there that matches. Now empty the recycle bin. Restart in safe mode, find the renamed .Dll file with a search and delete it. Now WGA is done. It won't stop you from the next ops. I recommend having an antivirus installed but not on for the next. Now you need to be able to get into your main account normally to enter your key, so I suggest you make sure you run a keyfinder and take down all pertinent info if you are moving OEM to new machine and have a new key you have already repair installed, we'll need it. You also need a keychanger that can affect the reg info as well to make sure it all activates properly. You'll have to download the crack yourself, but it does work. It should contain a file called antiwpa3.Dll and an antiwpa3.Cmd batch file. Make sure AV is off. You start up in safe mode again and run the crack batch file, it makes an adjustment and installs the .Dll. Now you need to restart in normal mode. Login... ...Is this real? You have total access in normal mode. Now to make it permanent without crack. FIrst, we need to tell the system we want to activate. Do it. GO to start programs accessories system tools activate windows. Nothing happens? DOn't worry. That's cool. Open task manager, and find the MSOOBE and end it. The system will now be unstable, but functioning. Now rename the .Dll with a new name and extension, or have your AV scan it. IT's in cdrive>windows>system32, and it will be called antiwpa3.Dll, so do whatever but do something to change the name or scan with av by rightclick. Now that it is out of the way, restart in normal. You'll get a box that says, cannot log in until you activate, and it asks if you want to... ...Uh OH... ...Wait... ...Click yes, and the activation program begins. DO it online, and the wpa will pass inspection. You are activated. Restart and then make sure the crack dll is deleted. You should be good to go. Now just update and put wga back in. Alls well.

Hi, I can help you recover that installation of windows xp without having to reformat and lose everything.  Insert your Windows XP CD in your CD/DVD rom drive, then select Repair Install, this will perform a REPAIR INSTALL of Windows XP, saving all of your configuration, but reinstalling drivers for your new laptop, such as keyboard, mouse, etc.  THEN of course you will need to do the activation procedure for which you wont have any problems as they keyboard and mouse will work.  Just phone microsoft and exaplain to them that you took out the hard drive from one laptop and put it in another laptop because the first laptop crashed, and I am positively sure that they will understand.

 Good luck!
