What FTP clients available free online have people here used? I've used some in the past although I can't think of what they are called off the top of my head. I remember using some both good (easy to use and fast) and bad (rather annoying or needlessly difficult to use), so any tips on what to use?

I'm just looking for one that's fast, easy to use-a nice good simple enter the FTP server info, drag or click the file/directory to upload and hit a button and there it goes).

Depending on what Internet browser you use there's a FTP client that can be built into Mozilla Firefox called Fire FTP.

I use core-ftp on windows, it's good and reliable, however it's not always the best choice, fireftp is a better one. For linux, fireftp is again a good choice, as I've used it a lot before and found it great.

I always use Filezilla for accessing my FTP accounts, it works quick and is completely free (and is regularily updated).

FlashFXP is a FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client for Windows, which offers the easiest and fastest way to transfer any file between your local computer and a server on the Internet, or even directly between two servers using Site to Site transfers. Available in over 20 languages. FlashFXP offer security, performance, and reliability that you can always count on to get your job done quickly and efficiently.

I think it's secure too!

Try some FTP clients. =P

Simple. Free. Filezilla.

The only annoying thing, which is the catch-22, is that they update it very often, like multiple times per month, which means you'll get a message every so often letting you know there is an updated version available, and you have to download it and update your copy. Other than that, excellent program and couldn't recommend it any more highly!

I rather enjoy FireFTP since it's integrated with the Firefox browser so I don't have to open more windows. Of course, you might not want so many bloated things clogging up Firefox. If I had to go with a client that's not browser-based, I'd go for either Filezilla or SmartFTP (if you're using Windows). I've also heard some nice things about CuteFTP, but I've never used it.

Also, here's a list of FTP clients that you might want to take a look at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_FTP_clients Personally I'd say the list is a bit too long to really be able to pick a good one...but who knows?

I also agree that simple, fast and free is Filezilla, I am using it and I forgot all other FTP Clients out there for Windows, even though the Updates are quite frequently and you need to update, but that isn't necessary like with say Apex DC++ which when it updates, you need to update, because it doesn't let to use that version for a reason like "this version has a major flaw for other users" or something like that, for Filezilla updates, most of them can be ignored if you don't have time to update

As Miles does, I am also using Core FTP, it works well enough for me and its pretty simple to use, it just resembles the basic funtionality of Microsofts File Explorer (Drag and Drop, Copy and Paste, etc.).

I use FireFTP if I need to upload things like images and other files, I think it is awesome. I used to use AceFTP but that kept freezing so I switched. I also use the command line ftp command but that doesn't offer drag and drop or other things (it's fast though).

For my HTML/CSS/PHP/XML files that I edit in Notepad++, I just use Notepad++'s built-in FTP plugin. On Linux, you can also configure Nautilus (on GNOME) or Konqueror (on KDE) to resemble a graphical FTP explorer that you can drag and drop files in.

I have use a plenty of ftp client since a time now, and finally I decided to use Filezilla, its free, and of all the free-clients that I have tested is the best.

Greetings

Filezilla is definitely the best free FTP client. It has pretty much all the features you need and is free, speedy and works great. If you use Mozilla firefox you could try the addon FireFTP which is also decent for normal purposes.

If you want a free File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Program, then I recommend using FileZilla. It's absolutely free. If you want to check on the features of the software, you can visit the visit from here.

I use FileZilla a lot when I am uploading files to my website. It is very easy to use. Thumbs up for FileZilla! :o

Best FileZilla, Opportunity does not yield to CuteFTP and SmartFTP, all the same just without the money. Take them a long time, no problem, translated into many languages not just English.

I for one, also use FileZilla for all my FTP needs and on my Macbook I use CyberDuck.

They are so lightweight and easy to use, it's unbelievable. Also, I like the fact that both support SFTP which I need for my college since they just disabled all FTP services for security reasons.

Filezilla is what I've been using ever since I have created websites. I had no problem with it on windows but have some problems with linux. In linux Filezilla wont let me download the files, it only upload files.

A poll added to this page would be nice. I am sure Filezilla would be the most favorite. Its opensource and is very simple to use. I haven't even tried others, so don't know about them. Have been using it since long time. These programs allow quick way to upload files to the server. But some free hosts limit the number of simultaneous uploads. But still its faster than manually uploading each of the files.

OK, let's talk simple and direct. @Spencer, you expressed this idea. So, you are in charge of posting here the list of the concerned ftp clients, and I add a poll to this topic.
Be careful when you create the list, because if the list only has "1) Filezilla 2) Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 " then the result will be too automatically sugested.

The best free ftp client is Core Ftp simply the best because includes all the fucntions that a FTP must have.

Chmod, Upload, Change Permissions, etc...

I recommed you FTP Commader, too. But the best is Core Ftp.

erm, could we really upload file using ie yordan? i thought we have to use win explorer.. beside, it's not completely free, we still have to buy winblows.

another suggests would be core ftp, micro ftp, go ftp.. i really want to suggest lftp because you can do ftp even behind nat firewall, but it only works in nux, mac osx cli, and cygwin.

btw, i'm using filezilla, but sometimes my files aren't completely transfered. is it only me? i wantes to try coreftp and goftp, but they only for winblows. now i'm stuck with web based ftp, and sometime use kftp or kasablanca (kde platform).. if there's other suggestion, pls share

I think yordan was just giving the comparison on how not to post the names. @akashi: I've added your suggestion too.

Here's a list of some popular FTP clients. I have also given the type of client whether its free, opensource or paid (Price range).

Filezilla: open source, Multi platform
FireFTP: open source, comes as a plugin for Firefox
CuteFTP: $15 to $40, Win/MacOS
SmartFTP: Once a free client, not anymore
CoreFTP: Free to $35
FlashFXP: $25
FTP Commander: $30 - $100
Cyberduck: MacOS
MicroFTP
GoFTP
Others (Please mention)

@Yordan, you can just put the names.
Notice from Yordan:
Done.

I voted for "other" in the poll.
I type "ftp:username@myhost" in the IE6 URL field, it opens a window with the remote computer folder, and I can copy-paste from and to my computer. This is very convenient when you often switch computers, and you happen to be on a computer where no ftp client is installed, or I am not familiar with the installed ftp client.

You really can do it. It's a stupid way, of course, mainly because there is no retry in case of network failure, so you don't really know if your file was correctly uploaded. But, yes, if you have no admin permission on a Winblows computer (unfortunately you can meet some in the real life) this method exists, it's better than having nothing.
And, no, I did not give extra money for Windows. I bought my computer with vista installed, and when I removed vista and installed Mandriva, I got no money back... But this is another debate, is Winblows free or not, shall we use it or not, can we survive in a Crosoft world... Maybe it would be worth opening a special thread on that subject.

I've used filezilla since the beginning and it's still great. It's 'faster than' all clients I've tried.
