The level of spam is getting really out of hand. Is the CAPTCHA failing? I think we should implement reCAPTCHA in our forums since apparently those work a lot better and maybe add a simple math quiz so that we can make sure that it's a human and not a bot registering.
Like, the problem is that we got a lot more spammers than usual. I have suspended like 8 people for the past week or so.

In that case, they must be paid by per post or whatever. I've been noticing some IPs with over 20 registration. This can't be bot. Otherwise, it could be that bot registers multiple accounts and stays asleep. After x days it uses pre-registered accounts and spams.
Anyone with some idea what's going on? AstaHost and Trap17 are under spam attack.
If these are bots, however, I think the issue could easily be resolved by implementing a custom validation field into the registration form. I've had a lot of problems with automated spam bots on my forum (IPB 2.0.0) more than a year ago, and since I've done this, there hasn't been a single spam post.
I added another field to the registration page that says "Copy the following code into the box below: xxxxxxxx", and I also added one invisible field containing the required value - this was done by editing the IPB template. The other part was to find the registration code (source/register.php, perhaps?), and practically copy the code that deals with CAPTCHA validation, while editing variable and field names to match the new validation method.
So this might do the trick...
It's like I'm spending 90% of my login time battling spam posts. And I know you guys are, too!
I think pyost's solution would work too.

Right. Even 99% last days.

Until OpaQue upgrades the forum to 2.3.6, I'm afraid what we have is the best defense. I'm sorry guys. I can't turn off the board and I cannot hurry OpaQue to upgrade AstaHost. It's going to be upgraded when OpaQue upgrades it.

I am still holding onto the idea that a group of people are going to popular forums and signing up multiple accounts. They then pass on the usernames and passwords to spam bots to do their things. Either that, someone wrote a mighty good script to read captcha just to post bunch of spam posts.
I employ reCAPTCHA on my website that cause spam to zero.
My friends (who are not computer geeks like us) who post comments without registration still need to go through reCAPTCHA in order to post the comment without registration and I got no complaints, so I don't know.
