When i download small movie clips from websites (ebaumsworld type stuff), some of the files are .avi and my computer is being a little slow on the uptake and won't tell me what runs them. Anybody know which program?

You need a codec in order to run such files and they are available here at:
http://www.free-codecs.com/

I would recommend K-Lite Mega Codec Pack since I use it myself or you can install standalone ones.

don't install k-lite mega codec pack, it installs a lot of **** you don't need.
either you go looking for the codecs you need, but if you don't know how to find out, the easy solution is: vlc, the player that will play everything, going form dvd, to wmv, avi, bin files,...
it's here:
http://www3.telus.net/jefmil/Stairway%20to...aven%20clip.mp3
it's free
it's good!

if you don't mind switching to a different media player try VLC media player from the VideoLAN Team. it'll decode any format you can think of except for maybe a very select few. It's open source and freeware so check it out.

I know this is a bit of advertising, and I did mention it in another thread, but have you tired Irfanview?

It can play practically anything and you get it from www.Irfanview.com

Enjoy :P

Saxsux your reply is not advertising because it is a reply to a post and you are providing a choice for the person who started the post. But if you start a topic with the intent to advertise a product then you are in violation of spamming.

I like IrfanView because it’s small and has tons of features. I would recommend it to anyone.

try getting quicktime and using their codecs or others available,
I haven't had any probs

IrfanView is freeware only for personal use
If you use it without a licence in a company that is a no no.

But I thought we weren't talking about a company. Jesus Christ wanted to know how he could run .AVI files from ebaum's world.
That seems pretty much like personal use to me.

it deppends what kind of movi that you downloaded or you´d like to see.
if you´re talking about Divx. Then you have to download a codec called divx, you can download it here http://www.divx.com/divx/download/

I hope I could help you

Yeah, I agree with astray, K-lite co-dec pack is defintely the way to go, I use it with almost everything, and it's the only way I go to play avi's

AVI is a PC format that you can run using Windows Media Player....

Windows:
Why not just use Windows Media Player? It's installed default on Windows XP computers... Just open an avi file and play it... You can find the codec on the microsoft website...

Other:
I would recommend quicktime. It's second-best to Windows Media Player in my opinion

Windows Media Player is a very good program for playing .avi movies. You can download it here: www.microsoft.com/mediaplayer/. If you don't want it you also could try Quicktime, not as good as WMP if you ask me, but it's also nice.

doesnt windows media player or real player work best...

   Tue Jul 26, 2005    Reply

actually im sure it doesnt really matter... they all work the same if u have the correct settings...

   Tue Jul 26, 2005    Reply

if you have the right settings, they all work the same. it then just becomes a choice of preference. i prefer real player to watch movies and stuff like that just because i'm lazy and don't feel like searching through my files to find something i watched recently. the important thing is to have that codec thing on your comp and just close your eyes and pic which player you want to use.

i do have the new divx, and i have to say that i'm impressed with it.

Windows media player, Quicktime, Real player etc....... .avi is a standard file format. You comuter should be able to read it. Try updating the versions of the said programs.

They also play in Winamp... I downloaded and installed the DivX codec, configured my winamp to play all media files by default, and they place just peachy for me. Also play in PowerDVD though a *little* of the picture quality is lost.

I'm sure that Windows Media Player also plays .avi formatted files doesn't it? I think you can also use DivX to play them. Can someone please correct me if i'm wrong? Thanks. ;)

the best of all best is Divx Player
its 100% free
DivX Play Bundle
(Includes DivX Player and DivX codec)

DivX Play lets you:
Play any DivX video
Add DivX playback support to your existing media player
