| | Wireless network are very interesting, because you don't have a cable between your computer and an other computer/gateway/router.
Have a wireless network is good I think if you don't want to see or put a cable trought the wall. It is even more intersting for laptop's to have for exemple internet in the garden. Wat can be better than read your emails in your garden in a nice sun.
The wireless technology is OK, it works good. And it can go far enough.
The only problem is that you have to use a good key (wep) so other people can not use your internet or even worse acces your pc (documents,...) So if you install a wireless network be sure that you have put a good wep key. |

Yes WLAN is really handy technology if you don't bother or simply can't do the wiring. But security is something that epecially needs to be taken account when using wireless communication. The traffic encryption that comes with 802.11b is not reliable enough. So if you you your email from your garden, make sure you use secure connection. Don't rely on link level encryption, do it on software level.

Yes, that's why I already use WLAN G technology, it's just like B technology but you can go up to 54MB/s and the security is better. And yes wirelles network are expensive if you compore to a classic network.

My college has wireless network connections all over the place, which makes having a laptop very convenient. Some of the wireless connections are on secure networks, however, meaning that in order to access that wireless network, you would have to have to know some type of security code or password.

QUOTE(jcguy @ Sep 5 2004, 04:36 AM) But is it expensive to install a wireless network in your house? Approximately how expensive is it? Approximately $80 for a 54M 11.g 4-port router and less than $40 / computer. Existing computers can accept a standard card, a PC Card (notbooks in particular) or you can even hook up via USB. All can be had for under $40. js

In my opinion, the difference between wire and wireless networking is the transfer channel. Though in wire networking, some tools can listen others communication, so the security also needs to be considered. What's your opinion?

No idea Jhonny, but WAN is useful if you want you have connections in multiple floors (i.e. cable modem in basement and you want to get Internet on the top floor) I still have LAN, but WAN is an option I might consider soon.

( a list with all the mac adresses you want to allow to access your network.. ) And you can also disable your DHCP server and define the internal IPs statically on your router. I have a linksys wirelessG wireless system at my house (2.4 ghz), it has radius of about 15 metres, so our whole house is connected to the internet. It may be more expensive to use a wireless network but it saves major hassle with a lan network which runs on cables, because our house is three stories high. Another thing is our network is completely secure as we use an encrypted stream and to acces our stream you must have a certain username and password. SO people can't drive past us with their laptops and recievers to steal our internet bandwidth.

you will get faster speed from a wired network no matter what. but if you can not run wires all over your house or apartment wireless is a savior.

I would not recommend wireless networking because of a few reasons. One of the first reasons is, I believe, it is very unsecure. What i mean by this is someone can take a wireless adapter and hack into your network. Reason number 2 is that depending how far you are away from the router, the slower the speed is. You get better speed on a standard router.

Wireless On The Xbox 360 Without An Adapter.

Wireless Routers
G G+ N (4) So in my house at the moment, my modem is running into a Belkin G+ router. We have a 2 story house
and I sleep upstairs. My sister is also upstairs and her laptop picks up the internet... Just.
I'm getting a new computer soon in my room and I want Wireless-N. I know wireless-N has more
range/speed than G, but does this depend on the router? For example, will I be able to have
faster/more stable internet than my sister because of the wireless-N card, or will I have to upgrade
the router to an N series as well?....

Extending A Wireless Network
Wireless Internet (2) Usually, to integrate WiFi capabilities into an existing LAN involves interfacing a wireless router
with an existing LAN and configuring it as an access point. If it is meant for free public use, then
it may not be necessary to encrypt the transmission, otherwise it is advisable to encrypt it with at
leas a 64-bit WEP (Wireless Encryption Protocol) key. Depending on the gain in db of the attached
antenna, the radius of wireless coverage can vary from 250meters to close to 450meters. Now comes
the stage where we need to extend the coverage of the wireless transmission, t....

Wifiber Technology - New Wireless That Is Faster Than Fiber!
