Winxp Pro: Usb Controller Drivers Missing !

gamerchick39
Hey all... here is my dellima... i had to format my hard drive and reinstall windows xp pro... i have a dell dimension 8300 its about 2 years old but still an awesome compy for what i do with it haha... anyhoo i got all the drivers loaded up except in device manager it has that nasty old exclamation point next to the USB Controller... which means none of my USB ports want to work. I have installed the Promise SATA drivers cuz according to the dell support site, they would make the USB stuff work but it didnt sad.gif does anyone really know what i need to install...

I would suggest three things that i usually try when drivers dont seem to work.
1. Get the full set of motherboard drivers not necessarily from the dell site either and install those thet certainly would not hurt.
2. Uninstall the actuall device then reboot and try the driver install again maybe it was a corupt first install or sumthing is stopping the drivers from working properly (looking at the properties on the usb device and then checking the code on the microsoft might help)
3. Last resort is to acquire a device specifications program of the internet which is usually free which will tell you indepth about the vendor manufacturer model number and various details about the USB without actually opening up your computer and from this search the internet for that specific model / vendor/ manufacturer driver.

Hope you get it sorted. Good Luck.

I seem to have the same problem, the only thing is that my compaq presario has 2 USB 2.0 ports on the front, but when I insert a thumb drive, it says "high speed device plugged into non high speed port" this happens on my win xp sp1. on sp2 it is fine though. are you sure you have sp2, cause it usually solves the problem.

hi,
you needed to download the update from the microsoft named : Q312370_WXP_SP1_x86_ENU.exe , to resolve the problem of usb. alternatively if you are using plain xp it is highly recommonded that you should download the SP1 and SP2 of windows xp.
if you are planning for these two u will not need the usb driver fix that i've said.
you can also slipstream your xp with the SP1 and SP2 and remove the problem permanantly, for slipstreaming (integrating Sp1 and then SP2 in the plain xp) you can use nlite, or bart's pebuilder software.or you can do it by the inbuilt utility of xp also , that is in the DOS command.
also check the motherboard inf driver has been installed or not.

Just in case nothing of this works, check the BIOS settings! Sometimes USB-support is disabled in the BIOS for security reasons. Ok, you seem to have used USB before and BIOS setttings should not have changed alone, but who knows, just check it if nothing else works, I've had this before on a friend's computer.

Have a problem with the USB port on my laptop (win xp pro). It does not recognize the mouse or flash

are four "USB Root Hub" devices, three "Intel 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller" and one

This happened last night when I hit ALT+CNTL+DEL to quit a process. Now the Task manager is missing
the minimize, close bar and the ability to choose Application/Process/etc.. And this is after a
couple restarts and everything. Now if I have to force quit an application, the task bar is always
on top, does not show up in the sistray and requires a restart to get rid of. This is with XP

  5. Need Help Urgently (missing Or Corrupt Hal.dll File).
    (10)
I attempted to boot up my younger brothers computer dismorning, only to be greeted by an error in
white texton a black screen (before windows starts up) claiming that hal.dll was missing or corrupt.
I am not entirely sure what happened, but my searches have lead me to believe that my little sister
may have accidentaly edited the boot.ini file (hopefully not removing it's contents as I
don't remember how I set it up when I had trouble last time). I am wondering if anyone knows of

  6. Need Help With Winxp (will Be Upgrading Hardware Soon).
    (7)
I found out the hard way twice before that Windows XP will have a fit if you change too many
critical components due to it's crappy piracy protection methods. The hardware I am upgrading is
the Motherboard, CPU and Video Card which will obviously make WinXP have a fit and refuse to boot
properly. I am wondering if anyone here knows a way around this? I don't much like the idea of
having to wipe the drive clean of everything and start new, re-configure, re-download, re-install,
repeat etc.... EDIT: Oh and incase it is important I am using Windows XP Home with Se....

Hi, just ran into a problem today when I was working with a computer with internet problems. This
computer is using Windows XP Pro with SP2 installed. I solved the problem already (was a bad LAN
port in the wall) but one thing has puzzled me and I want to know the reason behind it. For some
reason I can't uninstall the TCP/IP protocol in 'Local Area Connection' Properties...The

  9. Winxp Manager (yamicsoft) - System Management Tool
    (4)
If you are using Windows XP and think your computer is slow, you have trouble with things and more.
Then WinXP Manager is something for you. You can optimize and clean fix and edit Windows. It's
easy to use and not as hard and problematic as using regedit, services.msc and etc, to alter
windows. Some things you can do with WinXP manager: *Disable thumbs.db *Speed up your system by
disabling indexing and other unnecessary functions you do not need. *Do system repairs (scan system
files, restore desktop icons, fix shutdown and etc.) *And alot more! Download it now a....
  10. What Is Your Latest Winxp Problem ?
    (11)
What was the latest problem you have with winXP ? Mine: I wanted to play NFSU2, but the program
didn't continue loading, so I wanted to kill it, ctrl-alt-del, killed speed2.exe and I tought
the problem was over. NOT, my pc hardly responded to anything, so after waiting a minute for
taskmanager to start, I saw that another instance of taskmanager (wich I didn't start and it
wasn't the previous one) used 100% cpu. I killed it and things went better again. Had this
problem a few times, damned winxp isn't 2 weeks old or so and it starts bugging me already /....

say, my laptop ran Windows XP. I have been recommended by some people to try Linux so after
