Windows Vista Too Strict?

demolaynyc
I don't know if this is a fact or just a rumor but it's quite interesting. I was in a web design class today when I overheard about the restrictions and cons about Vista. I know it didn't come out yet so that's why I am not sure if this is correct. One of the guys said that Microsoft is making Vista more strict than the previous versions. He said that if one was to practice copyright infridgement for music or videos and whatnot then the information would then be sent to microsoft and to the authorities and let them do what they have to do. The other guy said that microsoft will know when an OS is installed and what computer and the OS can only be installed into 2 computers max.

My preferred OS is Windows because of its user-friendly programs and GUI but with the new OS that I think is coming out with these limitations, I might have to move to a different OS like MAC or just stay with XP.

Can someone please verify or confirm this rumor?

What i heard was that they want to make it locked where you could change your hardware without getting a new license but tat pissed everyone off and they stopped it. However the oem ones might still be locked. At this point everything you hear could be rumours. The copyright stuff wouldn't surprise me that much. I'm staying with xp anyways

However, by Microsoft being able to know if you are actually breaking into copyright things, they will be going into privacy issues.

Here is how Windows Activation will work with vista. If a user purchases Windows Vista from a store and installs it on PC A, he will only be able to use it on PC A, unless he decides to deactivate taht copy and install it on PC B. This system is flawed because users are able to back up their registry and by using a free tricks, they can recopy the registry. The only users that will not be able to transfer or upgrade their license will be OEM users. This is quite unfair but what can one do. Well quite alot, as provided with OEM installations. Its quite easy to create an installation disc that can upgrade or create a full reinstall. Anyways i shouldn't be giving our tips, otherwise microsoft might catch on.

I think that those restrict measures from microsoft are nothing but vapour. Windows is the most used OS because it's easy to pirate, and Microsoft knows that. The time to come that windows implement true antipiracy checks, harsh DRMs (those that delete unlicensed files and destroy disks), and piracy reports (think of the aborted trial for implementing TCPA & Palladium), will be the next chance for Linux to jump to the massive public (I would get into a mad mood if the new wonderful windows version deleted my mp3 compilations and projects without asking)

I've used Vista at my mates a few times. His PC only has 768mb ram, which sucks because Vista requires so much memory (2gb or something like that). I don't think I'll be upgrading to Vista for a number of years (if I don't switch OS). It has some nice new features, but I didn't like the 'feel' of it.

I'm sure Microsoft would lose a LOT of users if they did that.

Same here, i agree they'd lose a lot, in other cases it can be good to be strict about things. They are implementing a new feature that will basically run everything in 'limited mode' (which would be equal to windows xp's limited user mode) except the things that need admin rights. For example, games. From what i've heard is that the os will grant only the privelliges the game needs to run which is way more secure than just running it in administrator mode.

As for the anti pirating stuff it is on their benefit and it will be designed to stop law breakers. I think limiting installs and locking to hardware is a big turn off because i frequently upgrade my computer, if i can't play the latest games i get a new video card etc. What would be ok is if it binds the install to your harddrive. You will be able to upgrade what you want but you will of course need to have that same harddrive.

You know what? When vista comes out, I'm going to stay with XP and Linux.
Why? Vista Home Basic (lowest of low of all editions of vista) costs MORE than what I paid for XP Pro. Second, no one in their right mind would purchase Vista Ultimate which costs $400. I'm glad I didn't wait another year to build my new computer else I would have had to run either Windows 98 or Linux as my primary OS. Sure, Vista looks cool but it's going to be a headache. I'm urging people to go Linux or stay with XP. If enough people protest, MS will probably delay the date to which they no longer support XP. That's what happened with Win98, ME, and NT. XP is MUCH better than Vista. MS moved things around so much that me, a computer expert, was having trouble finding things that I used to be able to easily find. Control Panel is a mess.

I hate vista, but why would u need to use ultimate. Ultimate edition is like Windows Server 2003. Most users wouln't need such a service unelss they plan to 'host 200 acounts on that system and maybe host several websites. The basic package will be for most users.

Also, advertising to Russia isn't a good idea. First day that Windows Vista is launched in Russia, that same day a cracked version would be sold for half of it. Trust me i know, hehe.
