Ok I know windows update isn't really necessary but I am having the following problem, everytime I try to run Winupdate I get a failure to download/install updates. I've done the following to no avail: 1) made sure that all security settings are at default levels in Internet Options 2) cleared all cookies and files (including offline content as well) 3) made sure that the advanced tab was also returned to default levels 4) made sure that the automatic updates service was running in automatic 5) made sure that the background intelligence service was also running in automatic (here is where I get an error) 6) reregistered the following windows update components: WUAPI.DLL WUAUENG.DLL WUAUENG1.DLL ATL.DLL WUCLTUI.DLL WUPS.DLL WUPS2.DLL WUWEB.DLL Even after doing all of that I still can't seem to get windows update to work. I personally beleive that its because I can't get the Background Intelligence Transfer Service to start but I'm not sure. If anyone can help me figure out why it won't start I will be greatly appreciative. I made sure that the RPC service is running properly but even after shutting down the RPC and restarting it BIT still wont run. Thanks, Logan

I dont know if this is your case or not but I know that Microsoft has recently (well I think it's been in place for awhile) ceased all um...... "Pirated" copies of XP-CD-KEYS from being allowed to update now since you message is weired and has nothing to do with that it may not be the case but just though I would like to mention it anyway if you do have a legit key then try doing the validation check and try again http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtote...ws/default.mspx

QUOTE(James_K @ Jan 13 2006, 06:50 AM) I dont know if this is your case or not but I know that Microsoft has recently (well I think it's been in place for awhile) ceased all um...... "Pirated" copies of XP-CD-KEYS from being allowed to update Yup - this is the most likely reason... however if you have an original 'key' then you have some sort problem with your OS. Now if you go to the Microsoft Windows Update Service Page, the service will automatically check your computer through HTTP for your installed components, automatically configure an update package that your computer requires, allow you to download the package (after you select any parts to the package that you do not want) and help you install the update. All in all, unless you have a decent broadband connection, this process will take you between 15 minutes and a good hour; but you can be assured of the latest updates as released by Microsoft during it's monthly updates. Also, if you're running a pritated 'key' Windows OS on your system, the service will tell you that the key is unauthorized for automatic update. So, that will get you through the update and let you know if your version of windows plus the CD key is authentic. All the best.

Alright, perhaps I can help. The first thing to do here is to make sure that the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) is correctly configured. Kindly follow these steps ... - Click Start, then Run, type services.msc, then click Ok. - Double-click on Background Intelligent Transfer Service - In Startup type box, click Manual, then Apply. - Click the Log on tab, and make sure the service is enabled in every listed hardware profile. If you find one or more disabled, click the hardware profile, choose Enable, then click Apply. - Now, click the General tab, then click Start. This should start the BITS successfully. Now, you can check the updates again. I hope that helped. :-)

I've had the same problem a while ago, tough all 3 services were running, M$ updates still complainded that they were not running . The problem was that automatic updates (maybe BITS too, but I can't realy remember) was set to manualy. Set those 3 services (BITS, automatic updates and system event log) to start automaticly. This should probably do it.

all 3 of the services are set to automatic, my key is valid and authentic, and I had planned on reintalling the OS and Formatting the comp and bringing it back up from the floor, but unfortunatly my WinXP CD is toast...well I'm gonna have to see about a new disk...this problem doesn't seem to be fixable so I'm just gonna redo the system.

Why I May Be Installing Windows Xp Sp3 Again
(10) This is a sad tale of a man and his machine that would not start again. The story continues with a
sorted affair between two operating systems and a battle to win the love of this man’s heart. My
problems began last weekend when I started my computer after it had been off from the previous
night. Everything went normally throughout the POST but once Windows XP started I heard the dreaded
clicking from the hard drive. After several reboots and a Spinrite diagnostic I gave up and called
the time of death around three in the afternoon. This is not all bad because I had....

100 Reasons To Use Windows Vista
No, really?? (13) Recently, I have received an "Exploring Windows" email from Microsoft, which led me to an
interesting link called 100 Reasons You'll be speechless. Thought it was related to Windows

responding most of the time. Also, many users have complained about User Account Control, which say
that it makes using the PC not a breeze. I haven't tried it yet, but from others' point of
view, it seems to be intrusive and annoying. 2. Your music may be a click away from your re....

Will Using Fdisk Corrupt Windows Partition?
(9) I remember doing this before in the past with a DOS partition. It wasn't working properly, so
the office tech told me to use fdisk and delete that DOS partition. Then recreate it. To my surprise
Windows still worked after that. I always thought that fdisk would corrupt the Windows partition
somehow since it was a destructive partitioning tool. So I have always used Partition Magic instead
for my partitioning needs. If I install Linux on a separate partition and decide to get rid of it
later using fdisk, Windows will still be intact right? From my understanding now,....

Can You Create A Folder Name "con"
Is it possible to create a folder named "CON" in Windows? (19) I tried in both Windows XP Home and Professional. If you try to make a folder named "CON" Windows XP
renames it back to what it was. So creating a new folder with the name "CON" just renames it to "New

the folder from a cmd prompt failed with an error "The directory name is invalid.". This also works
