pedro,my opinion is since microsoft is commonly used all over the world (desktop computers),most hackers work on hacking windows, and same for viruses, explorer plugins and others. and what makes ms so vulnerable is that it is closed source, unlike linux which is open source. Therefore, when a vulnerability is discovered in windows it will take more time to be fixed since only ms programmers have access to the code, and meanwhile...you are insecure.

The only thing that is not clear to me is that why this thread has been started in the GOOGLE section. Surely it should have been a better fit at the OS section.

Windows XP is not sercure becuase the rate of which people are making potentially fatal viruses is much much higher than the rate of which Windows Microsoft are releasing patches and service packs to prevent this from happening. Also lots of people see it as a challenge to spread a virus and this is for some reason incentive to wreck hundred of computer drives.

XP SP1 and previous version are not secure because all port are opened on the internet. XP SP2 use an firewall who close this port, so i think, xp sp2 is more secure that other windows version. For security is more important to use FIREWALL!!! and do not open all join attach in mail!!

well i think that in windows xp home edition anyway is that there firewall is not as good as the other versions of the other windows. i think that is why they made service pack 2. But i dont know that might be for professional edition as well.

Don't use their FIREWALL then... There are always other FIREWALL to test... Like ZA or McAfee or Sygate... ( I think sygate is the same as Mc? ) And also you need to do a constant scan on your computer for spyware and adware which is often harmful... Virus check with Norton may also do alot of good. Added up with bi-monthly reformating or tri-monthly or whatever... It is good. You must know how to maintain a good computer instead of always blaming it on the hackers. If thre is no hacker, there won't be a better computer. Understand what I mean?

For home sp2's Firewall is sufficient. Other firewall is not an obligation because, aren't powerful that sp2's firewall. For office, it's necessary to use firewall hardware.

Well, mines Windows 2000 Pro... And it sure needs FIREWALL... Even with firewall, my computer is still proned to virus... And I dunno how to reformat my comp and what's more, reformatting causes me to lose my valuable file... Oh dear me... Anyways, my brother maintain this computer so it doesn't go bad... It's still ok... Except that it is always wrecked by me... hahahahaha...

Firstly, as many have stated, get Windows SP2 - it has a lot of updates not just for windows but for Internet Explorer to (even though I use Mozilla Firefox) and secondly I reccomend getting a Firewall. THe one I use is pretty good, and it blocks alot and it's free. It's called Zone Alarm: http://www.zonelabs.com

QUOTE(qwijibow @ Dec 15 2004, 11:16 AM) that and "Microsoft works" ( i think MS works was a personal money managing software suite... never used it myself) Actually Microsoft Works was a bundle of MS Programs which included more limited versions of word and excel. I think it also had a photo/image handler, limited publisher and a home finance tool too. I remember using it on an old computer and was frustrated becuase it didn't have full versions of word and excel (this was before my opensource days). cheers hashbang

QUOTE(qwijibow @ Dec 10 2004, 12:55 AM) most Windows users dont even realsise BSD and Linux and Solaris exists... they dont realise that the only reason virii exists, and de-fragmenting is needed every month is because it was easyer for microsoft to let you live in ignorance, accepting this crap as just a fact of computing. exactly! the fight club example is pure corporate risk management. something that occurs most everyday. unfortunately there is usually a price placed on morbidity and mortality which is used to do a cost benefit analysis in cases such as your example. as far as bsd ... anyone not running a bsd firewall is a wanker mine is a pII 233 freebsd 4.6 system. cheers hashband ps isn't "windows security" an oxymoron?

U know, Windows XP installs many services automatically upon installation. Click start>settings>control panel>administrative tools>computer management. click "services menu" can you see there? a list of services which microsoft installed automatically. example: service: "Remote Registry" description: "Enables remote users to modify registry settings on this computer." who wants his computer to have this kind of service anyway? they always say it is safe, but everyday they come with tons of patches. users are tired keeping up with these updates.

Gmail Security Flaw
(3) QUOTE When you create a filter in your Gmail account, a request is sent to Google’s servers to

your browser doesn’t display all the variables contained within the url. Using FireFox and a plugin
called Live HTTP Headers, you can see exactly what variables are sent from your browser to Google’s

How To Improve Windows.
(7) Lets face facts Windows is currently the most used operating system in the world. That said, let us
also admit that Windows is not the greatest OS out there either. (that would be Unix) So ignoring
completely ones opinions of Windows let's imagine we had the power to chance Windows completely
and were able to disregard previous Windows implementations (if you so choose ie the start menu) and
Microsoft marketing techniques. How would you change Windows to make it better? For me the most
fundamental change would be to make it more like Linux or OS X and have the kern....

Repairing Your Windows Environment
(0) You have already seen people fully desperate because their Windows system cannot boot. Of course,

have the thing repaired. But they can, before that, save their files. There are Windows LiveCD

hard disk is not embedded. And as you boot off a CD, there is no virus problem, at least....
How To Change Your Windows User Environment Variables
a step-by-step guideline (5) 1. INTRODUCTION. Most of Microsoft very basic users are satisfied when the Windows installer

open world, let you do some changes manually. For instance, if you install the java development
software on your pc, you have to manually tell windows where the java binaries are. That means, if
you type “javac” in a command shell window, Microsoft Windows has to know that javac.ex....

Why I May Be Installing Windows Xp Sp3 Again
