Wifiber Technology - New Wireless That Is Faster Than Fiber!

New wireless "WiFiber" tech faster than fiber?

Virginia startup GigaBeam set their sights high with their new wireless system: they're taking on fiber. They dub the tech "WiFiber," and are positioning the product as a replacement for fiber optic pipes in situations when they're too expensive, too harmful to the environment, or just too slow to deploy, and they're claiming one gigabit per second speeds to sweeten the deal. WiFiber operates in the 71-76, 81-86, and 92-95GHz frequencies to avoid interference and so that the signal is less impeded by light rain or fog than current high-speed wireless competitors. It also transmits in a tight beam to avoid overlap, but you still need a line of sight, so heavy rain can spoil your day. If conditions are right, though, GigaBeam's signal can make it for 10 miles, and is already shooting data from the Trump towers in NY and from a few other metro sites. Unfortunately, it's mainly for business links right now, since it's currently $30,000 for a set of radios (but that price should drop soon).

is it really radio if it needs a line of sight. or is it some kind of laser/light signal transmitter?

Wow. Just when I think I'm spoiled enough, people invent an even better way to get - and stay - online. Sweetnes!

Too bad I'll have graduated from this college before this new technology becomes popular and affordable enough for the university to bother with it. I could use a better signal here in my apartment. Heh.

that's neat! I was on a plane last month talking to an engineer who worked in telecommunications. We discussed what could possibly be on the horizon for this field. He discussed incremental changes regarding fiber optic technology. Then we discussed how basically, wireless is the inevitable technology. Of course, there are problems with wireless like LoS. I'm wondering if they can use conceptually similar idea of the laser to lengthen/focus the wireless beam for great distances. Perhaps that is what they already did...

very cool, fiber optic on wireless is just what I need, if I had a server computer with a T1 internet connection that is. It's amazing how far we are advancing in the last few years.

To Organicbmx, I think you need a line of sight not because it uses laser, but because walls or anything in the way may interfere with the signal. Same thing with my broadband connection, I need line of sight, but it still uses radio signals.

What a nice forum.

This isn't Faster than Fiber Optic. In fact its less than half the speed of fiber optic, its the speed of sound, Fiber optic is the Speed of Light.

Maybe its faster than our present wireless connection. I hope this technology will be available for personal use soon.

I don't see that technology going too far. Unless this technology is what ISPs are using to provide portable Internet.
