What Do You Need To Run Windows Vista

Microsoft announced in a site what are the minium requests to be able to run without problems o WindowsVista. According to Microsoft any modern CPU from Intel AMD and Via will do, 512 Mb Minium memories, a graphics card with DirectX 9 are more than enough to run the new operative System.

They've went crazy at M$. Vista w/ Aero desktop would use a freaking 700Mb of memory !!! That means you don't have much left when you have 1Gb of memory (there aren't many people with 1.5Gb or even 2Gb).
Plus installation requires 6Gb of hdd space, that's like peanuts if you have a 250Gb hdd, but it's still way over it.

I wonder if Vista is able to run on a computer that has a DX8 card when you configure it to use the Win9x desktop lay-out.

After reading that, I'm a little confused. I thought M$ was coming out with Vista, where did this Aero thing come from? And from the looks of it, who would actually buy that with the requirements you have to meet. I may just have to learn what all this Linux stuff is all about after all unsure.gif

Actually, marretas, it's not more than enough. It's not even close to enough smile.gif.

Remember when Microsoft declared that Windows 2000 required a minimum of 32MB RAM? Well, basically, that meant that unless you have 128MB RAM, you're screwed. I suppose they use a different dialect of English at Microsoft.

So I agree with wutske on his estimations. A minimum of 700MB RAM will be required to run Vista with acceptable performance.

Vista is the name of the new operating system. Aero is the visual styling (or perhaps, more properly named, the rendering engine) of Vista. It refers to the mechanism and style according to which Vista will look. If you've ever seen the glass-look of Mac, you know what that is smile.gif. But anyway, you can simply take the quick tour available at Microsoft's Website to have a look at what Vista with Aero looks like.

my computer's RAM is just BARE MINIMUM (512 MB DDRSDRAM PC2100 266MHz), which means Windows Vista is a powerhog, oh those GNOME users think KDE is slow and bulky, look @ Vista.

Ok here is what a friend of mine has said after actually using an "inhouse" copy of M$ Vista, unless you have 1.5 gigs of DDR2 400 or better, and running SATA with a Pentium D or AMD X2, don't even bother trying to run Vista, its to power hungry and requires to much overhead to run. Also you better have a video card with at least 128 megs of ram (an Nvidia 7300 or an ATI X1300 minimum).

The one question I have, and have yet to get a straight answer to is, Is windows Vista a 64 bit system or is it 32 bit, or does it support both?

Windows Vista is going to support 64-Bit system by default. So if your hardware is 64-Bit, you'll be able to get the most out of your processor and hardware. But if your hardware is 32-Bit, then Vista will adapt itself accordingly and work as a normal 32-Bit operating system smile.gif.

Thanks for that, I'd heard that it was going to be native 64 bit but I was afraid that it was going to leave the 32 bit world behind. Thanks for the info, up till now I'd only seen 32 bit versions of Vista and was thinking that they were going to have a 32 bit version and a 64 bit version, kinda like they do with XP.

so it's like Linux (about 64/32-bit). M$ is having a hard time catching up to Linux on power. Linux is having trouble catching up with Windows on the desktop. It's like Yingyang. Darkness is M$ and the whiteness is Linux tongue.gif

i don't think Linux has trouble catching up on the desktop that much i find GNOME more user friendly and easier to use then the windows interface, now the problem is mostly that users got used to the windows interface they refuse to try another one. smile.gif
now about vista I'm really not that interested in what it has to offer, i think an sp3 to XP would be better until most of the people have enough requirements but i don't really mind let them burn in hell biggrin.gif
and the new "looks" in windows vista are already available with project looking glass (although it's CPU hungry) and with XGL (still needs lots of resources too) but not as much as vista i guess.

Motherboard is Asus P5B.

Thank you for your time!
Please help!

REPLY BY ADMIN: Yes, I had the same issue as well. I installed 4 GB RAM originally and then I removed 2 RAM sticks and have 2.5 GB. It did not show more than 2 GB no matter how much RAM I installed in.

*groan* so my computer with 2 gigs of RAM with a 256 MB graphics card isn't going to be enough? Ahh well. I will just wait three years, enjoy my time playing BF2. Once three years (longer, hopefully...) passes up I will have a laptop for college and I won't have money or time to play very many high end games.

things take time. You'll see some "changes" around soon.

Either people actually pay $135 CAD for M$ Windows XP, ignore the branding or just jump to another OS.

I remember doing this before in the past with a DOS partition. It wasn't working properly, so
the office tech told me to use fdisk and delete that DOS partition. Then recreate it. To my surprise
Windows still worked after that. I always thought that fdisk would corrupt the Windows partition
