What was the latest problem you have with winXP ?

Mine:
I wanted to play NFSU2, but the program didn't continue loading, so I wanted to kill it, ctrl-alt-del, killed speed2.exe and I tought the problem was over. NOT, my pc hardly responded to anything, so after waiting a minute for taskmanager to start, I saw that another instance of taskmanager (wich I didn't start and it wasn't the previous one) used 100% cpu.
I killed it and things went better again.
Had this problem a few times, damned winxp isn't 2 weeks old or so and it starts bugging me already

My windows XP must have the world's longest startup, it even tries to install adobe photo album every time it starts. I even went to the run, typed msconfig, and couldn't find it. I also checked the start folder, and that is empty.

The other thing is that my computer won't open up my DVD burner as a writable folder, so I have to use the Record Now software.

I'm running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.

Hmm. I've been using XP a few years now on several different machines ... haven't had too many problems (other than it getting VERY slow when you load it up with tons of junk).

My last problem with it was when I had Netscape 8.0 installed a couple of weeks ago. I hate that browser now. The problems ranged from not being able to click on links (had to close the browser and restart) to it randomly freezing/dying/shutting down, even when I wasn't touching the computer/keyboard/mouse at all. (So no way did I accidentally hit a close command or anything like that.)

Once i dumped that pile of junk, things started working a lot better. GET FIREFOX! Seriously. It's the best browser I've used in years.

Oh yeah. i'm running XP Home Edition, but I also have XP Pro. (It's amazing what five bucks can get you when you're a full-time student.)

I run XP pro on everything except this laptop which runs Windows Media Center Edition 2005. I always get that DVD/CD burner error with the not able to read, or illegal operation, or something that prevents me from opening it a as a writable folder.

The only problem I have with WinXP is pretty much the long startup and I've tried hundreds of performance tuning techniques and it did not make much of a difference.

Quite possibly it's one of the services, but it would have to be a service I require running because I've disabled all the ones I don't use. Quite possibly it may have to do with IPv6 which is supported under XP, but other places it's not really relevant to use unless you visit IPv6 sites.

Apart from that WinXP Pro SP2 has been mostly stable, there are the few hiccups now and then, but it's probably from my neglect of actually using it. Since I'm mostly booting into Linux nowadays.

1) It ALWAYS sets the clock wrong dureing bootup !
i tell it NOT to automatically set the clock though the internet... but it does anyway.
i set the location to UNITED KINGDOM, EUROPE.. but it still incists i would be better off with America time (not sure which timezone)

2) the @ and " keys are the wrong way round, again, i set UK keyboard, but it still thinks im better off with American.

3) Although it CLAIMS to be multi tasking, the whole operating system freeses when i insert a cd / dvd, and doesnt continue running again untill the cd / dvd is mounted... whih is a pain in the ass for slighty scratched cd's.

4) Windows hard crashes wen i turn APIC off in the bios.

But ive recently bought a copy of cedega, so i can now play HL2 and Counter strike source in my beloved Gentoo

My latest problem with XP ...Oh my where do i begin ... lol. Well first of i too have a major loading problem i mean a good forty five seconds to one minute loading time and i know this is partly because i am running tons of proccesses such as my no-ip.org so that i dont have to manually start them but this is still ridiculous and also cos i have skined my XP using windowblinds but i cant stand looking at that green and blue anymore. To add to this when i do get in sumtimes (very randomly) my left click switches from opening files folders or starting programs on a double click but instead opens the prperties menu for these particular files now this has baffled me since i know i didnt change any settings for this to take effect and even if i set my mouse and folder options back to default it continues until finally i restart it a few times and its back to normal again. But apart from that XP for me is ok ...wouldnt want ot give these linux users another leg up

Well... I'm not one to usually complain about Windows XP because, I would say it is the best Windows version so far, better than Windows 2000 (anyway... that's a matter of opinion

).

My Windows XP partition which I've used since February on two systems (one in campus and one at home during the holidays) has finally crashed... I don't know what the reason for is, but I would say it's because of me letting down the firewall for a couple of hours at night because a friend wanted to copy something and thanks to all the viruses that are floating around in the campus LAN right now. It was working fine in the night and I shut it down and went to sleep. Morning I woke up and switched it on and I got a message saying 'Registry corrupted, windows has restored an older registry and has been succesful' and then logged me in. The start menu got corrupted ('All Programs' wouldn't even pop out!!), I couldn't install or uninstall anything, firewall was down, NAV 2005 was down and there was a new icon called 'web folders' in 'My Computer' and no CD Drive!!!

Fine, I did a complete chkdsk of all the drives after booting with the XP CD and then did a system repair (took me the best part of 6 hours to do that), but finally, the 'All Programs' was back to normal and 'My computer' was back again. The problem now lies with the firewall and NAV... both of them don't work and I can't uninstall them either. Keeps giving me an error message even if I try. I tried installing Zone Alarm and it went fine but when I restarted the system, it went into a perpetual restarting process ... kept on restarting after the bootscreen. Had to boot in safe mode and uninstall Zone Alarm to get it to start again.

So, for the past few days, I've been using Slackware (which I installed along with Windows XP

), which is pretty good in fact and I don't have any problem with it. But I've got a lot of important files in Windows in C drive which I've got to back up before I format and re-install windows. With my exams from next week, that could take upto another month. Anyway, I'm not complaining, as long as I can do what I want to in Linux

I hate it, if its not one thing going wrong with it, its another.

All last night it was giving me grief about the network, no internet etc. Just kept disconnecting itself, i just give up in the end think im gonna go back to linux, thats if my computer works after the kick in i give it!

To ben honest, I haven't had any troubles with Windows XP lately, maybe because I just formatted a few weeks ago. Although we (me included) do like to bash windows alot, with windows xp sp2 microsoft did boost the stability of its operating system by alot.

Yeah those error report sending options are pretty annoying. Luckily I don't get them much. Although by saying that I might have just jinxed myself.

I think the main problem is hoe cluttered it gets after so many months of (un)installing, browsing the web and generally using apps on it. I installed CCleaner recently after finding it on another post and found out I had about 300megs being used by temp files. It may not seem like much but on a laptop, where it's hard to upgrade the HDD, every MB counts. Maybe I'll invest in an external HDD. But anyway that's off topic.

Also msconfig does work for Windows XP, can't remember who said it didn't. If you don't have it then I think it can be found on the Windows CD. Or just google it and you'll get a few links on how to use it and where to download from. Same goes for Windows 2000.
