| | Hello everyone. Now I've had many experiences with desktop systems, but Today, I've decided to taskle a new task:
Building a webserver.
Now, I'm guessing someone knows how I'd want to go about this. I'd be running either OpenBSD, or Debian Linux. The computer is a bit older, but all it will do is serve a index page and a message board. Does anyone know of a good way I can go about doing this? |

I'm also interested by this questins. I guess that you first need to install a java server, probably apache. maybe installing Jonas withi comes bundles with tomcat should be a nice idea. let's see what experienced people will think about that. An easier way, of course, will be to use your astahost account...

You need a really good connection, like DSL/Cable 1.0 MBPS or more. Your ISp must let you host a server, some may not allow that. Your server should be at least 1.0 GHZ or more or else it's gonna take forever to load. OpenBSD would be a good choice if you're afraid of being cracked into, yet you can use Debian Linux. xboxrulz

ALSO... Instead of going for Apache, go for a more simple httpd. my favorite http web server is lighttpd (combination of light and httpd) or just "Lighty". Its default configureation is minimalist, it supports many apache features, and because of its light weight, its lightning fast. http://lighttpd.org

I remembered Light httpd, it runs faster than Apache on older computer and it's a better Idea to use it for whoose who doesn't advanced Apache server. Tomcat is NOT Recommended since it will run java to serve jsp which is not probably what you want. You probably want to use PHPBB or IPB for forum so you will need PHP.

if you want to use PHPBB or IPB for forum, you will need PHP and MYSQL for supporting the forum. check the www.php.net and www.mysql.com. both sides have HOW-TO SETUP manuals.

Port Forwarding For Webservers
Running a Webserver On a Router (0) Hi guys, I' back again and this tutorial is about port forwarding. I am going to gear it towards
users who want to run a webserver on their computer but cannot, simply because their router is
blocking the http port (usually 80). Before we begin, let me give you some background. Usually, when
you connect to the internet directly through a modem, a user would just have to visit your ip
address (assigned by your isp) to visit your server. However, when you are running on a router,
there are a few things to take into consideration. The router gives private LAN (local are....
Hosting A Webserver On Your Computer, If You Have A Dynamic Ip
Dynamic IP? No Problem! (2) First let me start off by saying that this tutorial is not about how to host a webserver on your
computer. That was done quite well by swizzeron. This tutorial has to do with those of you who are
interested in hosting a webserver on your computer, but are stuck with a dynamic ip. For those who
don't know, a dynamic ip is one that is non-permanent; and thus it changes. This is opposed to
static ip address' which are permanent locations on the internet assigned to computers. How did
dynamic ips come to be? Well as far as I can tell, they were created to deal with t....
Run A Webserver From Usb-stick On Windows Guide
(2) Run a webserver from USB-stick on windows guide Introduction A few weeks ago we got a
256MB USB-stick from school (yes I didn’t have one yet!), and I haven’t played with it since I got
it till my computer broke and I had to use my moms laptop. Since I didn’t want to break up my moms
laptop, I thought about my USB-stick and wanted to install a webserver on it. Though it can also be
used if you want to demonstrate a project of yours to your clients or friends whatsoever! It can
even be used as a real webserver! But please keep in mind that a USB-stick isn’t th....

Test Enviroment WebServer, SQL, PHP
(7) I'm thinking about setting up a test environment in my home network to work on web-sites and
test different formats. What are the different opinions on this. I have a few older computers
including an old server that are in the garage collecting dust. My home network consists of W98, XP
