Popups are mindnumbingly annoying, but thankfully they're a preventable evil. I use Firefox so there are very few popups and nowhere near as much spyware, adware and other malignant crap that can infest your computer. With Adaware, AVG and Firefox I have no problems usually. Web Advertising: Pop-ups - Is it *really* working?

I was just wondering how effective all those pop-ups really are. I know that I personally hate them with a passion, and I try not to even look at them because I don't want to encourage the pop-up makers.

Also the place where I'm working has hinted that they'd like me to make pop-ups for their site, and I just don't think it can bring any good. I mean, it just doesn't reflect well on a business if they have pop-ups, that's my opinion. I know there're some really good ones out there, but they're still annoying. But maybe I'm totally wrong and there's a large portion of people who actually do click-thru, etc. There must obviously be these people somewhere, otherwise why would they still be using pop-ups??? There should be a law!!

Lol.. 99% of the time my popup killer nips them in the bud - I hardly get to see them. The only ones that come to my notice are those which slip through the pop-killer's fingers - which is followed immediately by me adding them to the kill list wink.gif Pop-ups are simply crap. A much better bet is to use dynamic rotating ad banners along the page margins on the likes of google adsense. I think almost everyone uses a pop-up killer these days and thus they are such a waste!! Why would anyone want to advertise through irritating pop-ups - don't they ever get the idea that popups only serve to irritate ppl more??

Ever had your mom walk in after your nephew was on your pc and you are working on closing about 50 pr0n pop ups?? Then you'll see true shock LOL.

Anyhow, I use FireFox or Opera, so I don't have much pop ups. I personally dislike em, but I have less issues with them than I have with those annoying "sync speaker" ads Lycos and Angelfire have. And why do so many use those?? LOL Basically I dislike sound ads, pop ups and then the blinking ads, telling you you won something. Those really can trigger epileptic attacks. And then you have the sites that try to install stuff on your pc....

If popups do show up on my puter, yeah I glance at them, to make sure I don't click wrong or something (some have an X displayed and it looks like the real X button but by clicking on that one you end up messing up your pc) and then close em.

Ads like on here, I don't mind, mainly because they're decent ads, that don't blind you, don't deafen you and because they're a source of income, which then allows OpaQue to have this free host smile.gif

IF pop-ups didn't work, then we wouldn't see them. Just like telemarketers calling on the phone. I never by from telemarketers but they still call, so someone is buying. I find pop-unders to be more frustrating because you don't realize they are there sucking up valuable system resources.

Netscape catches most of my pop-ups now so I rarely even notice that they exist. Anything that gets by Netscape is usually picked up by Norton. In fact, I had to lighten up on the blocking because I could see any banners on my website.

Hey moon, particularly funny because I assume you and your nephew have different taste. laugh.gif - if not, no offense intended.

Just my opinion, cool.gif

popups can be interesting though, you could find out about sites you didnt even know existed...

Im upset over an advert, yesterday there was a "Crazy Frog 2.0 Remix" from jamster, I hated the original but this was cool, and now its gone but I clicked it. Some rotators are helpful to me. Some provide links to sites I didnt know existed. Others are junk.

True dat! Haha, I don't have epilepsy, but I feel like I could *develop* it because of those blinking ads. I just hate that the point of most pop-ups seem to be to ANNOY you, rather than to get you to go their site. It'd be one thing if they were normal pop-ups, and then you might give them some sort of respect by taking a brief moment of time to look at them... then politely close them. However, most pop-ups are just plain rude nowadays. I really really hate the ones that say "Congratulations, etc etc [I hope I've closed it at this point]." And the fake "X" so you click-thru instead of closing? What is this, guerilla-advertising? It's just not cool, and it's not savvy.

However, even if they were web-savvy, I guess I'd still be annoyed. Example: those ads that appear across the middle of your browser, with motion and fancy effects. Most of the time, the "X"/"Close" button is hidden somewhere in this half-transparent ad/pop-up... It's quite annoying when you're in a rush and trying to just get the info off the page.

I think banners are the LEAST offensive. As long as they're not blinking. And when they're nicely designed, I quite like banners. wink.gif

My browser blocks the pop-ups before I even see them. I used to hate them until the pop-up blocker.

I never found adequately those pop-ups; I feel that they are a hateful intrusive that reduces flavour to the pleasure of surfing. I understand that there must be a good percentage of users of the web who accept them, but I would not recommend this way to make advertising of any type. mad.gif

Of course there's the random popup here and there or when I visit certain sites (such as photobucket.com) but they're few and far between and easily remedied with a quick click. For those of you with internet exploder, I'd suggest Panicwares' popup stopper, or whatever it's called; I haven't needed it since I switched to firefox.

They don't work on the majority of people but they do catch your attention and it's not hard to click on them every so often. They are definitely more effective than banner adverts I'm sad to say and I know of a number of young girls in particular who have downloaded a large nuimber of the adware/data mining software that they are advertising. It's disgraceful but as long as popup blocking software exists, the advertisers will come up with ways to get them to you though other means.
