The reason most people like Linux is that it is almost 100% customizable. It has the ability to have better security than Windows, but only if you know how to set it up. That said, it is not too difficult to learn to use Linux, and there are many tutorials available online. For switching to Linux form Windows, I would recommend using Fedora and dual booting with Windows. The REDhat website has an excellent tutorial on how to do this.

I recommend SuSE because it's the easiest to use. Easy like Windows. Fedora is an experimental distribution and should not be used for daily uses. Mandriva one of the worst since it's bugged up.

Actually, Fedora is not an experimental distribution. Fedora does have developer's distributions, and currently core 4 fits that category. But core 3 and below are fully tested distributions.

I think SuSE has better configurations tools than Fedora. They're more complete and more powerful, even providing a frontend for some of the nitty-gritty stuff like Powertweak which allows people to actually change the kernel during runtime...

Obviously customizability is not high on his priority list since he is just trying out linux for the first time and knows little of the environment at all...don't imagine he'll be kernal hacking anytime soon

I've used both SuSe and Fedora and perfered suse but am using fedora at the moment.

I think Mandriva 2005 LE and Suse 9.3 are the best for now because of friendly user interface. I currently use Mandriva and I think it's great.

Please note that Fedora wasn't fully tested, their kernels have experimental codes that other Linux distributors and the Fedora developers haven't 100%ly tested them. The X server was affected because of an experimental faulty, it caused it to slow down.

Anyways, back to the topic, you should look around, I suggest you get Linux for Dummies. It teaches you to operate Linux as a novice in 2 weeks.
