| | I don't get this... I've downloaded the 5 (?) CD set of SuSE 10. It installs PERFECTLY however, the last step, the hardware thing (I forget what it is called), it quits on it and won't boot SuSE, it goes DIRECTLY into YaST and it's an endless loop... anyone else have similar install problems?
Thanks!

I did. I experienced this problem on Fedora Core 4 and SuSE 10. Don't know, what's so special about them I wrote to the developers of both distributives, but none could answer me, where was the problem. The only way out we found was to reinstall it again and again, until it goes clear. Sorry man, you just have to do it By the way, they told me that this problem occurs only on WMware, where I tried to install it. But, as I see, they where wrong Worse for them. Talking about SuSE 10, although I like it as an desktop system, I totally don't recommend you to use it as gateway, because thier new firewall is completely creazy! I spend a week reading mans and trying to configure it properly, and only then it worked. I find ipchains, iptables or, even more, pf from OpenBSD, much more suitable. By the choice is up to you. It isn't a big problem to configure it using GUI, but it is less powerfull, and besides I always prefer textmode, so...

Sorry for the delay! I was trying out other distros. Red Hat 9 won't find my ethernet adapters so I can't get online so I had to install some others and uggg.... it has been a mess. It's an i386 (Intel Pentium III 900MHz), 512 MB RAM, 40 gig hard drive. If you need any more specs, just let me know [N]F

hmmm... it should work. I just got a 550 MHz Pentium III 128MB RAM machine working with SuSE Linux 10.0. At times like this, you should try redownloading them and before burning them check their MD5Checksum xboxrulz

That's another possiblity, except I also have SuSE Enterprise Server 9 RC5 that I borrowed & copied from a tech at school. It does the EXACT same thing except the first initial login causes problems. This is strange because I've installed that version on a Pentium II about 500-600 MHz 512 MB RAM and it worked fine. Do you know of any software that will run in Windows to check the checksums? [N]F

All CD burning software have an MD5Checksum checker. I don't recommend you running Release Candidates (RC). As they are quite unstable. Run SuSE Linux 10.0, it is stable and I don't think you need to run the server edition for your desktop. xboxrulz

Hello dude, it seems u have done some mistakes during installation.. I never had a problem... do not install in graphical mode... Try using character mode only.. may be u r practiced with character based installation... i beleive by this time u have installed properly..(or shifted to some other Linux variation).. if then come back to SuSE only.... Becaause noe u get XGL .. this is nothing but provids 3d effect for your system.. When u close ur applciation it is just not simply close it diffuse.. and while switching between desktops it gives u the feel of rotating a dice.. u can set up option like seeing from outside of dice and as well as inside of dice also and obviously u can set another wallpaper on the top(virtual)..also.. while pressing alt+tab... earlier u see only few icons now compressed and transparent small image of the original application wil be displayed.. and more over window chooser are given... u have some 15 application how long u will press alt+tab combinations.. so just press Some F11 or f12 (u can configure) all the thumnails of original application will be displayed and u can just click the application whatever u want... and many more is given... only SuSE can compete to MS windows in Desktop environment.... hope u too enjoy that............

Yeah... hmm... wonder how that would go? Probably something like this: Me: Hey, your hardware seems to only like Windows and not Linux! What gives? Them: ... Me: Is Microsoft paying you guys or something to have something against open source software?? Them: No. Umm.. the tablet PC features just aren't compatible with any other OS. Me: So what? I want to use Linux and I should have full hardware support! I can run very few distros but I don't have USB support which is critical. Them: Use Windows. Me: But I don't want to use Windows! Hmmm... now that I think about it, this sounds like a conversation I had with a sales rep for Dell. I told them I didn't want Windows on the hard disk because I was just going to install Linux over it and why should I pay for Windows if I wasn't going to use it. Except I know Dell hardware will run Linux with no problems... [N]F

Averatec C3500 (tablet PC/notebook). It's the dumbest thing ever. I swear it HATES anything open source (even my disk partitioning utilities that are based off of Linux won't run either. Like I said, only Ubuntu works but it doesn't seem to check the USB ports like the other Linux distros which cause kernel panics. It's very interesting since I've heard of other people installing SuSE and other versions of Linux on it. I don't know if I may need to flash the BIOS or what. Edit: I found something! After about 20 google searches with all sorts of combinations of keywords, I found this post on a forum: QUOTE Be aware: Linux will give you a hard time on a C3500 for Linux if you have a newer BIOS version (like TH11v1.0 10/11/04) . It will not boot unless you add the nomce switch, it will *not* support USB and PCMCIA. Other than that it runs fine But a laptop without USB or PCMCIA is worthless. Michaela Still trying to get USB / PCMCIA working. If somebody would just be able to get us an older BIOS version ... :bawling: [N]F

Ok, I downloaded and tried to install 10.1 but I still got the same problem on the hardware configuration screen. I just don't get it. It's almost as bad as my laptop but my laptop won't run anything linux. Only Windows... well, it runs Ubuntu but there's no USB support (that's why all the other linux distros won't work on it. It tries to find USB and then it crashes). I'm not sure what that computer has against SuSE (or what SuSE has against that computer). [N]F
