| | Since these message boards are full of adverts for it, I thought we could have a discussion about Smiley Central.
I know that say that thier software is 100% spyware free, but everyone says it is full of it. Microsoft Anti Spyware picks up loads from it. Why else would they spend so much money advertising it and so much time making it? |

I know what you mean... Most programs that package their software with spyware claim to be spyware free. They try to pass them off as "useful" programs, like a clock synchronizer??? Why would you need a clock synchronizer when Windows XP has one built in? These clever ways of passing spyware off as programs that are useful is very depressing especially when they affect the lives of hundreds of people. I try to help my friends avoid these schemes as best I can. The other day I had to completely reformat my friends hard drive just because of the amount of spyware on it. His processor was maxed the whole time his computer was on. I would suggest carefully reading about a program before you download it, and take user opinions into serious consideration.

Trend Micro blocks Smiley Central very strongly as a dangerous website with spy ware. Is there other websites with emotions regarded as being free of virus and spyware and reasonably safe? -Terry

I’ve never run Smiley Central myself so I can not give you a definite answer. (I was never quite that stupid.) I do know that they have been around for a very long time and they have a long history of deceiving customers and loading spyware. When a company has such a reputation I would believe it is wise to steer clear. On the issue of advertising, I don’t know which company Astahost uses but I am sure they run advertisements independently of content. Much like a radio station, the advertiser buys so many impressions and then the station randomly runs the ads. I listen to Dave Ramsey (http://www.daveramsey.com/) all the time and occasionally you will hear a credit card ad. Dave is a die hard pay off all your debts and cut up your credit cards philosophy so it is not a good spot for credit ads. Same thing for web advertisers. You could get a Smiley Central ad on www.IHateSmileyCentral.com.

While Smiley Central advertises itself not to be spyware, I think that they are definitely up to something. I think that someone using my computer installed it by mistake and it was a pain in the butt to remove. There were several programs that got installed together with the smiley central app and some of them had to be manually removed. Then I swept my computer with lavasoft adaware, antivir antivirus, hijackthis, and spybot search and destroy to make sure nothing was left on it. But I'd say stay away from heavily marketed programs that are geared toward luring in teens and pre-teens who are non the wiser, or even adults.... lol

Aye, Smiley Central and CursorMania and stuff like that are viruses. They say it is Spyware-Free and they're reviews are great, but they are not. They are fake reviews and spyware with the software. xxxx-jozh-xxxx

Smiley central is the most annoying thing I've seen in ages. I have a handful of friends that use it seemingly problem free, but they are too computer illiterate to know where their problems come from so it doesn't surprise me. The advertising is annoying, having people try to get you to get it is annoying, knowing its full of spyware is annoying, and yet people download it and they probably rake in a mint with it. Sometimes the internet makes me cry

I remember giving it a try some 16 months back. I didn't use it for long, neither did I realize that it was some kind of spyware and definitely took their word for it. Its surprising to know that something deemed 100% spyware free is full of it. The prospect of using so many cool smileys with Yahoo! seemed rather exciting. But, it was rather slow and did have all the symptoms of a spyware. Then again, I wasn't much aware of all these spyware stuff back then.

ALOT OF PROGRAMS ARE FREE AND SAFE ON THE NET...BUT...
Smiley Central
EXAMPLES:spybot s&d,clickster,avira
anti-virus,frostwire,manycam,mp3gain,mp3mymp3 and many many more...I've got tons of programs on my pc that I got for free via the internet.A person just has to be careful. There are actually free and legitimate screensavers a person can download as well, but agan a person needs to be careful.I've been a heavy pc user since 1997 and studied source code, xhtml, and am not ignorant about the pc and internet,etc...Alot of free stuff online is legitimate (virus and malware free )..If a person isn't sure about downloading something google it by typing review, then the name of the product in question.
also.Once downloaded, run virus scan...Never download product you're not sure of by opening it..Save to a folder instead..Then scan it for virus's and spyware or adware.
when installation begins keep track of what's being loaded. My security( avira)will notice immediately if a program other than the initially intended program begins to download(bundled junk like toolbars, search engines, etc).Generally one can tell by name of the file whether or not it's something one wants downloaded.. My security notifies me immediately and I have the choice to allow or bock those files. The download then continues after I make my decision.
I suggest avira as an anti-virus software and comodo firewall and superantispyware for trojans and general spyware. Also iobit security 360. And keep windowsdefender activated also. These programs don't interfer with on another and all of them I've mentioned are free. There are alternative fee versions, but the free versions of these programs work great.Avira's free antivirus scans in real time and it's an excellent program all the way around. There's alot of free stuff out there.Just be careful!!
important--A REMINDER!
newbies or not. always search for reviews regarding programs that aren't familiar to you.
THE REASON Idon't have virus problems...For example..I reviewed cursormania cause I wasn't sure about it.Not just one review search but five..It's all negative..It only takes a few minutes to search for and read 4 or 5 reviews regarding a product or program.

As the saying goes, "nothing is ever free". There is always a cost to any so-called 'free' stuff, which in this case is adware that is installed with the Smileys . Although it isn't a virus or worm, it will make more ads appear on your computer.

The problem is within the download not the smileys. I make smileys (they are actually called emoticons) using a gif animator program (freeware) and I can reasure u there is no possible way the smilies themselfs can't cause any harm. But when dowloading the smiley central franchise may put extra programs like spyware within the program.

QUOTE ((G)ben @ Mar 13 2009, 07:19 PM) never mind, it was a paid job, so no real bother to me ! No real bother to you, and you earned some money, very nice for you. But it was a great damage for the guy who had to pay your job in order to have his PC cleaned, so it was a great trouble for him. Then, it can be warned as a dangerous virus for normal users, even if a clever guy is able to remove it.

smiley central is definately spyware
Smiley Central
I doubt there is very much super sinister like bank account theft going on here. I think that smiley central are just "aggressively marketing". Regardless, it's a pain in the ass and truly awkward to remove.
I removed it from a customers amchine by using superantispyware and malwarebytes on all the computer accounts in safe mode with system restore turned off.
after that you can remove the remaining browser helper objects that annoyingly now open up new tabs in your explorer that never connect with "hijack this".
sounds simple, but it took me three days of trying different things to get to this magic selection.
people should think about what they click on rather than simpy click on anything than moves... (ooh bright shiny colours ooh)
never mind, it was a paid job, so no real bother to me !
