Review: Amarok - The best Linux mp3 player available

About:
For the uninitiated, Amarok is an mp3 player for Linux which uses the KDE libraries. IMO, Amarok is the best player for Linux, and now with the new release (1.3.6) they've added even more features.

Features:
Amarok has got more features than any player I know of (Winamp included). The best feature (IMO) is downloading the lyrics of the song that is currently playing (using the artist and album name) from lyrc.com.ar. In addition to that, it also downloads a thumbnail of the album cover of the song currently playing from Amazon.com and it gets stored in a (MySQL if it is installed or else SQLlite) database. The new version also downloads info about the album, artist or song that is playing from Wikipedia.

It has a media library and also has an attached file browser (which works similar to Konqueror). It has dynamic playlists where it automatically selects some songs and appends them to your playlist. You can even connect your iPod to it for transferring songs or burn your songs into a CD.

I have only presented some of the features of Amarok. It has many more features (such as shortcut keys, equaliser, visualisations and so on) which make using Amarok a real pleasure.

Drawbacks:
One drawback with amarok, is it doesn't play video files. Also, some of the engines don't allow for playing anything other than mp3s. The xine engine is the one I use (you can choose between artsd, gstreamer and xine engines) and it plays wma files as well.

Also, amarok isn't very aesthetically pleasing wink.gif. It has a compact mode where it 'sort of' looks like any other player but IMO, it keeps you from utilising the player to it's fullest.

On a side note
You can download a lyrics plugin for Winamp from lyrc.com.ar.

m trying to find a better media player than WMP, mainly for audio/music. Im trying to find one that
plays mp3's and mp4's, and if possible ogg and flac, but its not nessessary. ive tried VLC,
but it kept freezing on me everytime i made a playlist, possibly because i have too many
songs(1400+). winamp and itunes seem to be too bloated IMO, and WMP itself just lacks in playable

Has anyone here tried Windows Media Player 11 Beta? It sounds quite good and i'm in the process

Anyone got any feedback on it? Is it good? Better than the previous versions? I've been using
RealPlayer for a while but I'm thinking i'll just try out this version and if it's any
good I may switch back... I'll see how it goes!...

Before the last time i dropped the MP3 Player, it was working fine. But ever since the accident, it
has stopped giving me sound from one ear of my headphones. I am sure that my Headphones are alright
as they work fine on other systems like my PC and my Walkman and CD Player. But..i need to know how

I recently changed my primary computer's OS from Win2k to Ubuntu Linux. I'm a big music fan
and I do all my music and video (including DVDs) playing with my computer. So in a way my computer
acts also as a "media centre". I have a lot of music in digital format and lot of CDs. For CD
playing Rhythmbox is just fine but for mp3s and such I've yet to find my favourite. By the way
on the Windows side I used Winamp5, which GUI and media library were just awesome. Good media
library is a must for me. For video I think I'm going to stick with Mplayer. So far I...

  13. DivX - Very good movie player, maybe best (9)
Divx player plays almost all types of movie files including .avi. It plays them much better than a
normal player like winamp, or windows media player. The sound is also significantly better. You can
burn DVDs and I think you can use it to make DVDs with "code" but I don't use that part so
I'm not sure. In my opinion it's the best vidio player out there right now. Here is where

that will play hosted wma (or ogg) files. I've found some programs that will play mp3s, but
quality cbr mp3s are too unweildy to stream on Myspace. I'm looking to use a flash program
