ReactOS is an effort to create a Free Software replacement for Microsoft Windows that is compatible with existing hardware and software. Changes in this release include kernel improvements (bringing it close to XP), improved stability and hardware support, better compatibility and application support, usability improvements and a package manager. http://www.reactos.org/en/news_page_37.htmlWhy would people use this instead of Windows? Simple. It's more lightweight, but can run all their software. When ReactOS is complete, they'll be able to run up-to-date Windows apps without upgrading their hardware and paying for a new OS. It's even compatible with drivers for Windows. Once it reaches 1.0, it will be ready for home use, it will have a plethora of software and drivers, and a familiar interface. Unfortunately this has been in development forever, development is very slow and it's very likely that once it is finished Microsoft will sue them into non-existence. If you try it on Virtual Box, the virtual machine thinks it's Windows 2000.

Heard of it? (1) Hello, A few years ago, I heard of an OS in development called ReactOS, designed to be compatible
with windows programs. I didn't notice it again until a few months ago, when I downloaded an ISO
of it and gave it a try. It didn't work with all windows programs I tried on it, but most
worked. Many will wonder why this should be used rather than simply using WINE. Well, Linux was
designed to be a clone of UNIX originally, and as such, is not designed to work with windows
programs. ReactOS was actually programmed from the core to be compatible, and does take use of ....
Do I Need To Set Up Any Special Kernel Options To Enable Cd/dvd Burning?
CD / DVD Burning (0) If you're running a fairly recent kernel, probably not. Older kernel versions required
scsi-emulation to be set up for the drives, but recent versions support direct ATAPI/IDE access. If
you're using a 2.6.x version kernel, you almost certainly are ready to go. An easy way to test
if direct ATAPI access is available is to install cdrecord (mentioned below) and issue the command
Code: $ cdrecord -dev=ATAPI -scanbusIf your drives are mentioned in the scan output,
you're ready to go. 2. How can I burn CDs/DVDs under linux? Burning Software: GUI: xcdroas....

balloon popped up. Moments later, another update appeared, strange… I opened Windows Update
and it reported that this one update had a size of a few MB up to a few hundred! Could it
be… Well it was, Windows Vista SP1 is ready for all. As I write this, I am currently downl....
Linux Kernel 2.6.24 Released
(5) The latest stable version of the Linux kernel 2.6.24 has just been released. http://kernel.org/
This kernel brings a lot of changes (the changelog is HUGE). According to Linus, most of the stuff
is one-liners, and mostly not very exciting ones at that. There is however a new BroadCom driver,
b43, a continuation of the existing bcm43xx driver, you will notice a significant performance
improvement when you switch. _________________________________

Downloaded the latest version they released, before being bought by Sy (4) Hi there, First off a few days ago I switched from Linux to Windows (don't ask me why!) and
trying to get it secure. Second, don't know if this is the right forum, but it seemed the best
choice to me! Alright, now my question: Is Sygate Personal Firewall still secure? (it's
quite dated now!) Symantec bought/destroyed Sygate. But I downloaded Sygate Personal Firewall
from oldversion.com , it's the last version they released and it's the firewall that best
suites my needs. I'm behind a router (with firewall) at the moment, but i lik....

not correct. How is it possible to know the current value of SHMMNI, SHMSEG, SHMMAX etc..., really

Pc-bsd
Alternative to FreeBSD but based on same kernel (6) After looking through this forum, I noticed nobody had commented about PC-BSD, which is in version
1.2 based on FreeBSD kernel 6.1. I have had some very good success with this system, admittedly
using vmware-workstation, and I didn't even have to install it, as they provide a downloadable
hard file that works with vmware-workstation as well as vmware-player. The GUI Desktop is KDE 3.5.3
and the site for further information is here One overrriding reason to use this system is that
they use PBI files to install applications so you don't have to worry about depe....
Kernel Shutdown Error...
(0) I have a PowerMac G3 that I'm working on and it's giving the kernel shutdown error from time
to time. I have read up on this issue before and it should be either related to the Mac Operating
System itself or the hard drive. The problem is that I tried to do a disk verification the other day
using the OS 10.3 (Panther) CD and in the middle of the process, it showed me that kernel panic
shutdown screen. In case you don't know what this is, it's the screen that's showing
above the current window, asking the user to shutdown the machine (in a few differen....
Mac OS-X Kernel: Is It A Bad Idea ?
anyone else think itsa bad idea ? (3) Monolothic kernels.... Pros... 1) Easy to write drivers. 2) Fast 3) Simple Design. cons... 1) 1
faulty driver can crash the whole system. Microkernels... Pros... 1) Very Stable, drivers dont run
in kernel space, so faulty crashing driver can just be re-started without affecting the rest of the
system. cons 1) A little hader to program. 2) Device Drivers must use message passing instead of
driect calling to get anything done... you lose a little performance. The MacOSX kernel is what
they are calling a "Hybrid kernel" its half monolithic, and half micro. But this....

(3) The first beta of the new phpBB3 was released on the 17th of June, and it seems quite promising.
Personally, I've been waiting for this release for so long, and I'm so glad it's
finally here! I've had the pleasure of installing this software on my local machine (and let
me tell you, as far as phpBB2 was easy to install, phpBB3 is even easier). Lots of great new
features, and if anyone is looking for a forum I can now whole-heartedly recommend this thing!
What do you guys think? What feature did you like best? I liked the fact that the Administr....
