| | Hi all,
I have observed that there's a lot of difference in the rendering of firefox and IE. The websites designed for IE that involve some sort of DHTM menus or some javascript codes don't open smoothly in Firefox. I don't kbnow the reason. I have searched google a lot of times but no clue about what and where does the difference lies in th e rendering engines of Firefox and IE. Does any one has some information about that??
Thanx in advance.
Regards. |

The difference would probably be more towards who is more closer to Javascript standards and whether the script is standard compliant. You'd have to look at EMCAScript 262 to find out whether the script in question is following standards or not. Because of the different implementations that was used with Microsoft JScript and Netscape Javascript a lot of this had to be standardise. Firefox has chosen to work closely with standards on this, so that could be a reason why it works fine in IE but not on Firefox. Cheers, MC

Firefox uses the Gecko engine created by Mozilla to render pages (and to render its windows' layout too!), while Internet Explorer uses... uses its Internet Explorer engine. IE's engine uses many many codes that Microsoft invented on their own. However, most of them do not follow web standards. The Gecko engine closely follows web standards (it's very hard to completely follow them -- only 2-3 browsers can currently do this), so the codes you write for IE probably won't be executed by Firefox. But if your code follows web standards, IE will probably understand it, though there might be a few exceptions.

Since you're a Firefox user, I'd recommend using the IETab extension. It's derived from the older IEView extension. Essentially, it embeds as an object in a Firefox tab, the page you want to view using the Internet Explorer rendering engine. You're effectively browsing in Firefox but using IE to render the page. Be forewarned that there are certain unresoved issues: > IE's ActiveX enable/disable settings do NOT work > All popup windows open in a new IE Tab > Navigation history list does NOT work > SSL icon does NOT work > Site's favicon does NOT work

Unfortunately IE Tab has a memory leak...would give you a performance hit in your browser and potentially unsafe. Take a look at the memory leak list here. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problematic_extensions

Firefox Performance Stats
(3) Hi all, Does anyone know where I can get hold of performance stats on how long Firefox take to open
really large websites (like > 500k of xhtml). I have done some initial tests with a page of around
1MB and found that Firefox just stops for about 5mins while it gets over the shock. I could go
though and test a lot more combinations, but I hoping to find some performance tests that show the
point where Firefox starts to degrade. Cheers, Hoopa....

New Site Of Mine
Some questions (5) I'm a huge huge music fan, and decided my next project (now that I have catalogued my 1000 or so
albums) should be to set up a music website. After much deliberation I decided to set one up,
containing album track listings, titbits or useful(less) information, cd covers, links to artists
websites, etc. My thought is, I can list over 1000 albums (getting the info from my own
collection), so do I categorise them and put a lot on one page, with a linking menu at the top, or
do I give each one its own page? I'm thinking 1000 or so pages would take up an awful lot o....
Problems With Mozilla Firefox?
flash plugins etc (6) Hi, I just recently downloaded and began using Mozilla's Firefox 1.6 as my web browser, but for
some reason, whenever I try to go to a site that uses a Flash plugin, Mozilla refuses to let me
download the plugin. I mean, it tries, but it never works. Does anyone else have the same problem
with Mozilla or have heard of this happening? its not that big of a deal, because I can still use
Internet Explorer, but Mozilla is just much safer in general, so I'd rather use that. Any
advice, answers or ideas would be very welcome. thanks in advance.....

Other Browsers Besides Firefox?
barebones (13) I love firefox also, but I'm looking for a barebones browser that just basically has an address

can play almost any media type (music mp3s, ogg, wmv, etc...video's like .mov, .avi, divX
encoded, etc....images like jpgs, gifs, etc...). MPC is a "barebones" program so to speak - there
is nothing fancy about it at all, but it is a simple program that is extremely versatile. A....

Why you should switch to Firefox now
The GDIplus vulnerability (27) This is about a new flaw in Internet Explorer and how it renders one of the most common image
formats in the web, the "JPEG". The code that enables a hacker to exploit this flaw is out to the
public and therefore in a matter of a couple of weeks, we'll be expecting a new virus that uses
this exploit. The GDIplus DLL (Graphic Device Interface plus) or gdiplus.dll is only enabled in
Windows 2000 & XP. So if you're running on an older version of Windows and if you've
upgraded to XP SP2, then you're not vulnerable to this exploit. Read more about it here ....
