Poor Man's Wifi

In the March issue of Popular Mechanics, there was an article about PC modding. Inside there, they showed a pic of a homemade WiFi antenna, and gave a link to this site with instructions. Well, yesterday at my friend's house, we made a prototype, but we need to remake it, because we couldn't find a hosering, so we just attached the USB WiFi adapter to the sieve with wire, and the cord is hanging down (if we had the hosering, it'd be going through a hole in the back of the sieve). So, anybody like? Ya should, since it's cheap and a 12" could even get a range of 2-3 miles...

I have just bought a wi-fi router and a pci card, and i would really like to expand my wi-fi limits... why not take my pda to the park.. on sunday, and check my e-mail tehre, jejje, taht would be nice..

I'll have to save a little to buy the materials, but i'm hopping to test it out, thanks!

Well, the day after we built the 7-incher, my friend rebuilt it as a 12-incher, and yesterday, he IM'ed me. Where was he? In a parking lot near Interstate 5, bumming off of somebody's WiFi signal.

I dunno if you heard about a pedophile from canada. We'll he used something similar to that to gain access to peoples internet and he used this to download child porn into his laptop while he drove up and the down the street. Luckily the police got him.

That technique is called "Wardriving" http://www.wardriving.com/ It can be used to use someone else's unprotected Wi-Fi connection. The downside- you have to be in a car or something mobile not your desktop. I'm not sure if its entirely legal either.

That is not true. If you live in an apartment complex where some idiot has an unsecured access point then you can definitely do that. I do it all the time. Sometimes I wonder why I pay for my own net connection.

If you are into wardriving, you should know that there are a few places here in the US that there are "traps" setup to catch you.

In the town I live there are 1 such trap and it's monitored by the police. They use a directional transmit /receive antenna that cross over a major road where it illegal to stop or park. Right next to the road is a huge private parking lot where you can park out of the way and out of view from trafic and bypassers. Most of the wardrivers use the wifi locators that companies use to find the optimum location for an antenna so just driving by on that main road will spike the meter.

It's only one way in and out. As soon as "snort" goes of, the police put a cruiser at the end of the road. If you don't go onto an illegal site they just leave when you close the transmission. If you go on an illegal site, dispatch calls the cruiser and you get nabbed

One time, many moons ago on tech tv, they had an segment on making an cantenna. They used a coffee can, and some other parts to make a long-range antenna. I read a review on line, and they made a lan with 2 of them. It had a range of over 2 miles with 802.11g. I had the article on my computer, but it got lost after my last format.

wow! a distance of 10 miles! what a device you can just make yourself. it be great for hacking or something into some buildings WIFI connection. but bad if you get caught...
