| | I attempted to boot up my younger brothers computer dismorning, only to be greeted by an error in white texton a black screen (before windows starts up) claiming that hal.dll was missing or corrupt.
I am not entirely sure what happened, but my searches have lead me to believe that my little sister may have accidentaly edited the boot.ini file (hopefully not removing it's contents as I don't remember how I set it up when I had trouble last time).
I am wondering if anyone knows of a simple single floppy boot disk that I could use to edit text files on the drive so that I can hopefully repair the boot.ini file.
As it stand my brother does not have a floppy disk nor a working CD/DVD rom drive (and the motherboard does not support bootable disks).
I can however temorarily transfer my floppy disk to his pc to repair the file but that is really my only option right now (I only have one floppy that works so I can't use the WinXP/2k boot floppy's). |

This link should be able to help you replace the file. I also included the step by step process of it as well for a just in case. http://www.compphix.com/corrupthal.html 1. Insert and boot from your Windows XP CD. 2. At the first R=Repair option, press the R key 3. Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair. 4. Typically this will be #1 5. Type bootcfg /list to show the current entries in the BOOT.INI file 6. Type bootcfg /rebuild to repair it 7. Take out the CD ROM and type exit

wait ... no floppy, no cd, no bootable cd support, what kind of junk is that ? I remember having such problems before and since I can't remember how I fixed, I probably used the last know working configuration option . If that doesn't work, you might just transfer your brothers hard disk to your computer to copy the right files.

I can't get to anything windows related so I can't restore the last known configuration. I can possibly swap my floppy disk over if needed but I'm only going to do it once I have a plan because I'll need my computer to put the files onto the floppy lol.

I managed to fix the problem, however I had to end up re-installing Windows 2000. But atleast it's all finally up and running now (I managed to get a CD-ROM drive working).

Will Using Fdisk Corrupt Windows Partition?
(9) I remember doing this before in the past with a DOS partition. It wasn't working properly, so
the office tech told me to use fdisk and delete that DOS partition. Then recreate it. To my surprise
Windows still worked after that. I always thought that fdisk would corrupt the Windows partition
somehow since it was a destructive partitioning tool. So I have always used Partition Magic instead
for my partitioning needs. If I install Linux on a separate partition and decide to get rid of it
later using fdisk, Windows will still be intact right? From my understanding now,....
