Hi. I have an irritating problem. I have two old computers. (No job until July 1, so money is at a premium here). Actually they are prehistoric Dinosaurs, but here is-. The "New" computer is a 1999 Gateway Select 400 Desktop. The "Old" computer is a 1997 IBM Intellistation M Pro. I've had the M Pro for two and a half years, and other than the fact it is slower than a snail, it has served me fine. Bought the Gateway because it's a little newer and a little faster. The M Pro has Dual PII 300MHZ Klamath Processors, and Intel 440LX Chipset, and Intel Integrated graphics. I installed an ATI Radeon 9250 128bit 256mb PCI Graphics card in it, and it worked (works) just fine. The Gateway came with a K6-2 400 AMD Processor and ALi Aladdin V Chipset, and ATI 3D Rage Pro AGP 2X Integrated graphics. I replaced the K6-2 400 with a K6-2 500, and switched the Radeon into the Gateway. My problem is that when the monitor is plugged into the Radeon (on the Gateway) I have to start the computer six or seven times before it will boot into windows. It does one of two things-it either boots to the Gateway splash screen and then puts the monitor into hibernation mode, or it boots to the Gateway splash screen and then goes to a blank black screen. It alternates between the two until I've re-started it six or seven times, and then it will boot all the way into Windows and work just fine. If I remove the Radeon and run the computer off of the Rage Pro, the Gateway boots up and runs with no problems at all. I put the Radeon back into the IBM, and it works in the IBM with no problems. On the Gateway, with the Radeon installed, nothing I tried worked to fix the problem. I am assuming it is some kind of power or power supply problem. I triple checked that I had the correct jumper settings for the K6-500 (no help), I reinstalled the K6-400 and reset the jumpers for it and triple checked those settings (no help), blew out all of the PCI slots (no help), tried it in the other PCI slots (no help), flashed a new BIOS (no help), installed a more powerfull power supply (no help), installed new drivers for the Radeon and the Aladdin Chipset (no help). And I am pulling my hair out. The reason I am trying to get the Radeon to work properly in the Gateway, is that I have a number of games that I like to play that run slow on the IBM and that will not run at all with the Rage Pro Graphics (8MB memory versus 256MB). Also, two other issues on the Gateway that may or may not be related- According to the Device Manager, the system believes there are two floppy drives installed when in fact there is only one and is yellow flagging a Resource conflict (Disabling and /or uninstalling one of them does not do any good. It keeps reinstalling everytime I reboot.) Reinstalling the Operating System did not do any good either. Also, using one of my BIOS Detection programs (MCPUZ) I noticed with the Radeon intalled on the Gateway that the program was reading the exact same BIOS ID String for the Radeon as it was reading for the Rage Pro. The Radeon and the Rage Pro in fact DO NOT have the same BIOS ID String. I already knew that, but double checked it anyway when I reinstalled it in the IBM. Any Ideas any of you can give me to help fix this problem would be greatly appreciated. I have tried to find BIOS updates for the the Radeon and the Rage Pro, but I can't find them anywhere. Both Systems are running Windows XP Professional. Thanks.

Sounds like the system is dying but damn are those computers ancient artifacts. You really need a new system. hey shuska, I know this response is a few months after the fact but it could be possible that your "new" computer that is having the problem is trying to boot up using the integrated card instead of the pci card. Even though the pci card is still in the comp, you need to go into the bios and disable the onboard video and set it to the pci graphic card as the primary graphics instead of onboard... from what you are describing, this should fix that problem.

Help! Pc Not Detecting Video Card

I Need Advice On An AGP Video Card Around 150

Video Driver Error?
Please help! (2) Recently, I've been encountering several problems with my computer. One of those is that when i
play a game, say MapleStory that uses up the whole screen, sometimes it would just hang for a second
or 2 and restart the computer. Each time this happens, i send the error report and (surprisingly)

Problems With Motherboard - Can Anyone Help?
(11) So, I shuted down my PC. Then in the morning I tried to turn it on but nothing happend. I cleared

Problems With Matrox Video Card
gaming (2) i have five video cards at home, all crap, (i just ordered a geforce 2200 with 256mb ram for 70
bucks) but i have more than one computer...so the geforce cant go in all of the computers. one video

Video Card Cooling
(5) I'm looking at getting a new heatsink+fan for my 9800 pro 256. I've heard that they generate
gobs of heat, because the bulk of memory is on the top of the board. I don't know if this is
