| | Has anybody heard about Microsoft's next generation of Windows? It's named Longhall, after the Longhall Pub under/near the main microsoft building or something like that. I saw it on the news last night, and it looks quite spiffy, but will be (as usual) full of bugs and viruses and stuff. I think it runs on a touch screen, and most of the functions looked similar/same, but they have given it a major cosmetic overhaul so stuff lights up when you touch it and other spoofy stuff.. Anyway, I tried to find out more about it, but it seems there's no info anywhere. |

Longhorn is Microsoft's codename for the next version of its Windows operating system, to follow on from Windows XP SP3 [1] (http://news.com.com/Reversal+Next+IE+update+divorced+from+Windows/2100-1032_3-5577263.html?tag=nl) and Windows Server 2003. It was originally expected to ship sometime early in 2006 as a minor step between Whistler and Windows Blackcomb (note the whistler codenames heh, longhorn is a sports bar in whistler) Technologies: * Fundamentals: new developments to the basic structure of the operating system including the .NET framework, further support for digital rights management (DRM), an application deployment engine ("ClickOnce"), improvements to the installation of applications (Windows Installer/MSI 4.0), and the Trustworthy Computing initiative (trusted computing). * Avalon: a new user interface subsystem and API based on XML, .NET, and vector graphics, which will make use of 3D computer graphics hardware and Direct3D technologies. See Windows Graphics Foundation. * Indigo: a service-oriented messaging system to allow programs to interoperate as part of the .NET framework. * WinFX: a new API to allow access to these new features, replacing the current "Win32" API (see Windows API). It is worth noting that Avalon, Indigo, and WinFX are technologies that will be made available to Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 as well, and are therefore not technologies to be exclusive to Longhorn, but rather developed in time for the Longhorn release, to be incorporated in that operating system. This doesn't imply coming visual changes to these operating systems though, as Aero will still be exclusive to Longhorn. The reason for backporting these technologies is to allow an easier introduction to these technologies to developers and end users. The spiffy stuff you are talking about is Aero - Aero Glass experience This graphics mode includes support for 3D graphics, animation and visual special effects that delivers the richest experience possible in Longhorn. Consequently, this graphics mode requires the following: * At least 64 MB graphics memory (128 MB is recommended) * Support for at least 32 bits per pixel * Support for advanced 3D hardware acceleration with capabilities equal to DirectX 9 * A graphics card that uses AGP 8X or PCI Express 16-lane bus Although this may appear expensive by today's standards, it is likely that such a configuration will be entry-level or lower by Longhorn's release in 2006-2007. Aero experience This graphics mode delivers the minimum hardware acceleration for the Longhorn user experience and is the minimum required for new systems. * Windows XP Driver Model (Longhorn Display Driver Model is recommended) * At least 32 MB graphics memory * Support at least 32 bits per pixel * Support 3D hardware acceleration with capabilities equal to DirectX 9 * A graphics card that uses AGP 4X or PCI Express 8-lane bus ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ anyways, you could get your hot little hands on the alpha release of it, i won't tell you how though (illegal content) so this is just a statement. In the Monday, sources of the Microsoft disclose that the launching of the Longhorn is foreseen for the Christmas time of 2006, after successive delays in the launching of so waited operative system. Until Bill Gates it affirms that it is impatient to see the most recent version of the operative system launched the public. The words of the president of the Microsoft, Bill Gates are these, in a speech of the WinHec (Windows the Hardware Engineering Conference) in Seattle. The Microsoft still used to advantage to demonstrate the some technologies that he intends to see inserted in the Longhorn, as well as the plans for this new operative system, with the launching programmed initially for 2003.

that's definately a great point. xp looked so bubblegum it drove me nuts. i got rid of the crappy xp gui for the W2000 gui with some custom colors and all that. at least it has options to get rid of that. but xp made a big break into consumer computing cause for some crazy reason a lot of people liked it. i htink it was just cause it was comfortable and NOT computer like. y'know? that made people less nervous. but that doesn't make it an inherently good system, although it made big steps into people's comfort zone, which for microsoft, is really important. gotta keep thier huge market portion. and i agree that windows is definately not necesarrily the "best" system ever, but like i said, people got comfortable and they'll use it. GUI is easy, yeah, you lose functionality, but most people don't need anything more than windows gives them. people who do know how to work around the things windows lack, or they use alternates. kinda just the way the world works i guess. QUOTE(Trekkie101 @ May 12 2005, 09:03 AM) I actually have faith in them, its there last real chance to shine through on the desktop market, Longhorn will be special alright, security etc will be much improved and red screen is just a tweak but Microsoft wont die easily and will take one last stand, and they *might* just do it. And heres my reasons why linux isnt a viable alternative *YET* *Most people struggle to click, they wont understand what init and kernels are */dev/hda1 will confuse too many people *./configure isnt as good as an exe * Its a lot harder If linux could clean up a bit to make it so, the underlying stuff is gone then it can keep up, otherwise, Microsoft will keep the lead a lot longer. But saying that, I love my fox, and wouldnt switch back. Yes, Linux is more difficult to use, especially if you are at the console. But it's getting much better. More and more people are switching too, especially outside of the U.S. where not everybody can afford a 150$ operating system. I was a pretty fast typer when I started using Linux, but now that I've been using Gentoo for over a year, I'm blazing fast, especially at the console. There are several distributions that make Linux almost as easy as Windows. I would recommend Ubuntu Linux ( http://www.ubuntulinux.org) if you're looking for something easy. There is a price associated with ease of use as well. You will always have more power at the console than any GUI can give you, ever. There's just so much you can do at the console that haven't been incorporated into a GUI system. Take piping for example, you can use it to take the output of one program and immediately feed it to another. The only way you can do this with a GUI application is if the developers build in support for the specific program or by saving a file and then opening it in the second application later. I don't mean to make another OS war thread, but Linux is on it's way, and I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you. It is more difficult to use and for some people it's too much, but I do believe that Linux is growing exponentially and eventually it may be the OS of choice. End rant. Thank you for putting up with me. Well, about longhorn, the only thing that I have read/seen about longhorn is that it has this funky bar on the right quarter of the screen that's just wasting more space. I think the start bar and icons are a waste of space, but what I saw looked even more teletubbie than XP. I'm minimalistic and Windows just does not suit minimalists.

I hate M$ and this is no different. Windows reached decent (but not great) stability with XP, and now they are planning something with so many lame new features (ooh, 3d windows. who cares...) that it will take a super computer to run and will probably crash all the time. Plus it will have all kind of built-in "copyright" protections that will take away your ability to backup software, music and movies as well as blocking direct hardware access, thus making any free software that plays DVDs by reading and brute-decoding the data bite the dust. I am NOT at all waiting for this release to come out and in fact hope that all work M$ has done on it gets lost.

Microsoft's largest security issue isn't that what they make is inherently bad, it's just that it's so widespread that it's easy for someone to make something to exploit the OS (or any other product) and have a massive impact. I'm not at all saying Windows is definitively the best, but that it's biggest problem is being so popular, not solely crappy programming. Well, that's my 2 cents... Ray J Gentry IV
