Longhorn Price - Microsoft's outragous idea

Can you believe that Microsoft is thinking about making Longhorn a yearly fee software. I would hate for Longhorn to be like this and loose Microsoft so many customers. You can read my post on there if you like, It'll be signed -Brandon Hall. That post states my oppinion about this. Hmm. I really wonder how many people would be willing to buy Windows if they do implement that fee thing. Although it really depends how big the fee is. If it's a small fee per year, like $30, it might (or might not) encourage people who are poorer in the present but have a steady income to buy the authentic version, but that fee is going to have to be reasonable with regards to how long Longhorn is going to last. If Microsoft is not going to release another version anytime soon, the fee had better be really small, because some people will continue using that OS for maybe five years or more? So long as the math works out people might purchase it.

Makes me kinda wonder what kind of security precautions they're putting on the OS to make people pay yearly. The recent article about how some researcher found a way around the current Microsoft authentication process makes me doubt most authentication processes in general. I mean, I just ripped my "Copy Control" CD with iTunes without even trying! (I bought the CD, it's legal.)

that yearly licence would mean a whole lot more people would stick to windows xp,
and why not?
...me i prefer 2000...but this isnt my computer... (save me the long speach about how windows xp is better...I have heard it..)

and don't feel sorry if microsoft lose some customers...it would take a lot before they start to feel it..

For Microsoft this idea may be good for earning some good revenue but for me as a consumer this is the very very bad idea. @non is right in saying that if Microsoft does so then most of the people will be remain attached to windows XP. But I hope that this idea of microsoft will be a idea which will never be implemented.

So...

Things as they are now, People either Got windowsXP with there new computer, or they upgraded from windows98 / 2K with a coppied cracked version of XP OR built there own computer, and put a cracked coppied windowsXP on it.

Things as they will be....
People get windows XP2 / windows 2011 (or whatever Longhorns official releace name will be) they will have it for a year, then use a hacked / cracked version.

Lets say for example, windowsXP cost £70.
then (if i was a windows user, which im not, lol) i wouldnt mind a yearly fee was £12 or less, and thet guaranteed to release anouther version of windows within 6 years.

That would be okay.

Before oo much more ranting goes on, does anyone actually know what the yearly fee is ?

Yes, it's like qwijibow says. Ther sure will be a way again to use Windows a little bit cheaper. I can't imagine that Microsoft will release an uncrackable Windows.

A yearly fee software? I don't like the idea about that. Personally I hate yearly fee software, I would rather pay a big one time amount and be able to keep the software for life then to have to pay to be able to use year after year.... I can see how this would make it harder for people to crack, but not impossible. And for never needing a service pack? HA! Microsoft will never be able to make software that does not have bugs in it that needs service packs to patch the crapy programing jobs they do....

yeah...all this stuff with microsoft over pirated software and junk...its really annoying and stupid - personally i went out and bought windows xp pro when it came out and burned a copy so that i didnt have to activate it every time i installed the operating system (i am constantly installing os's on computers and junk) then i obtained about 30 xp pro discs and 20 2k pro discs from school because they were throwing them all away and they said i could have them - with those i use ultra edit 32 and edit the win logon file to bypass the activation.

also with the audio cd burning - i recently bought about 10 cds (100 dollars worth thank you very much) from bmg and all of the cds have that new copy protection crap and i used alcohol and burned them and i had no problems what so ever.

i really think that companies should stop worrying about people "stealing" their software, just let the fbi or whoever catch the people that are doing it and take care of it. they are just losing money by putting all this security junk onto their software - it annoys people ESPECIALLY ME !

Yet another thing wrong with Microsoft....

Gates cares about NOTHING except money and will do anything to make more of it.

If Microsoft does do this to Office and Windows Longhorn, I'll downgrade my self to WIN2K and Office 2000/2003 or just switch to Linux.

This is just stupid... if they do that, I am sure EVERYONE will just keep their current Windows OS or will current Windows versions also be affected allong with Office?

So if I am understanding this correctly, you will have to purchase a user license for $200 AND PAY A YEARLY FEE? And also, do we know how much this fee will be? If it is $20 or more, I'll just walk away from Windows. I seriously will. I'll purchase a Linux laptop and a Linux PC and I'll be set with Firefox, Thunderbird, and OpenOffice.org.

I hope Microsoft realizes that this will be a big mistake and push people away from their software, even though it is already disliked and people continue to use it.
