What operating system are we talking about? You can lock anyone out except a Super User (Administrator), if you need to lock them out then I guess you would need tools to do this. On Linux, to lock a User out (using root), "chown User:User" where User is the User you'd like to have complete rights to it, then "chmod 700 directory" and now only that user or a Super User can access it. Under Windows it's more complicated, most often every user is an Administrator, though you can lock them out, they can still add themselves to the directory and view it. I'll let someone else answer this side of things, since they might be able to suggest some tools you can use or configure it properly. Cheers, MC

You can try hiding the specified folder. Look under the tutorial section ... there are atleast 2 tutorials on how to hide it in Windows. If you're using Linux, then do as MasterComputers has said above.

I know there is software to basically encrypt a folder and it decrypts the contents when you input the password which sounds like what you want. Unfortunately I don't remember the name and believe the one I saw wasn't free regardless, although I'd be willing to bet there is some freeware that lets you password lock individual folders/files

When i want to find these types of programs i always go to majorgeeks.com as my first resource. Past the years they have never failed me into providing a good mirror or finding some simple tool program. I'm not sure if its at majorgeeks.com at all now because i can't check at the moment. But you might want to try it and see. When i want to lock a folder, i dig deep into my c drive, save it there, and hide it. It's the only other way i can think of.

I personally use Hide Folders XP to hide and lock my folders. It's not freeware, though — it's shareware with a 30-day trial. But it's a nice little program, with three methods of protecting your folder: (1) Hide & Lock, where the folder is not visible and not accessible to other users, (2) Hide, where the folder is accessible but not visible to other users, and (3) Lock, where the folder is visible but not accessible to other users. One feature of the program that I particularly like is that Hide Folders XP is capable of true stealth mode, ie. it can't be detected via the Task Manager nor can it be seen in the Add/Remove Programs list. =^^= But enough about that. Here are some lists of the other folder security programs around: Enjoy! =^^=

Well if you just want to hide a folder you can do that by selecting hidden in the properties, no need for software to help with that But for locking folders you'll need some extra juice

The problem with hiding a folder by setting properties to "hidden" is that any ordinary 13-year old can easily bypass that. I should know, it's happened to me several times. Hiding the folder deep in the directory didn't work either, even when I renamed the folder. Beats me how the kid found it so quickly. =^^=

I protect MS Word documents by adding a password. You can find that in the "Security" menu when you go to the options. For other files, I just use a zipping utility that offers password protection. WinZip works just fine. But there are free alternatives. The only problem is that, if you forget your password, you have to either re-create the file from scratch or buy a password-force utility to try and crack your password for you. (Either option stinks, of course.) The password option won't HIDE your files - anybody who uses the computer can obviously still see them - but it does make them more difficult to access. Unless another user has a password-force utility, or can guess your password, you've got a bit of security.

How about PGP? There's a free version, and it's as good as they come. Forget about recovering your passsword though, if you forget it, that's the end. The new free versions encrypt single files, but if you go for the older i think version 6, you get PGPdisk for free as well. basically it's a file that you create to whatever size you like, say 2 GB, and then when you put you password in it mounts the file as a drive on your computer, and you can have all your personal files in that one folder.

Sandisk Memory Card Write Protection
watch out for that lock switch (13) About a year ago I bought a pocket drive that you put a memory card into and then plug into a usb

drive and tried to put a text file onto the card to give to a friend. A message came up "Access

Indexmaker 1.01
Make an index from your files and folders (5) With Indexmaker you can create an index file in html format directly from your files and folders.
You can crreate from any folder of your hard disk with all its subfolders or not a finish HTML file
with hyperlinks of your files. This freeware comes with two HTML layouts with the posibility to show
or not the size and the date and time of your files. It is more simple and less advanced than
DIR2HTML -which i prefers- because your resulting index file don't create any index of your
subfolders if you choose the option to view them, but comes very handy if you want to c....

Lock Down Switch Port To Increase Network Security
Assign the MAC address to each switch port. (0) One way to boost network security is to use Cisco's Port Security feature to lock down switch
ports. A growing challenge facing network administrators is determining how to control who can
access the organization's internal network—and who can't. For example, can anyone walk into
your office, plug in a laptop, and access your network? You might argue that the wall jack has no
connection to a switch, but couldn't someone just pull the Ethernet cable from a working PC and
connect to the network that way? You might think this an unlikely scenario, but it d....
Firefox On Os X Versus Safari
Does Firefox still lock up regularly? (11) I currently use Safari for most browsing on OS X just because of stability. Firefox was able to
decipher more sites correctly, but would frequently lock up (under 10.4.3), spike my processor,
flood my bandwidth, and need a Force Quit. From posts in various forums at the time, this was not
unusual and due to a networking bug. Question is, with new versions of OS X (10.4.5) and Firefox,
is it stable? Are other people still experiencing this problem?....
