The History Of Logo Design

hihihihi88
The history of logo design and logos dates back to Greece in ancient times . The word "logo" means a name , symbol or trademark designed for easy recognition . Logo design history had it's humble beginnings as a cipher consisting of a single letter , and later a design or mark consisting of two or more letters together . The cipher may be either all the letters of a name , the initial letters , or the sumame of a person for use on stationery , business cards , or eisewhere .

Many early Greek and Roman coins bear the monograms or logos of rulers or towns . The most famous of these early logos is the sacred monogram , which is formed by the conjunction of the first two Greek letters of XR , S , T , O and S : (Christ) , usually with the A : (alpha) and O : (omega) if the Apocalypose on each side of the coin . The Middle Ages were extremely prolific in inventing ciphers for ecclesiastical , artistic , and commercial use .

A logo can be a sign of graphics or logotype and used as a company's symbol -- a corporate identity . The logo should be literally the first piece of graphyics that the reader would see , no matter on print covers or web pages .

smile.gif funny, never knew that. well, many words in modern languages are roman, etymology is funny. (for those who don't what it is: etymology is finding out where a word comes from. especially in chinese characters it's funny to see where they come from. for example: big disaster is the sign of a big flood (as in the Bible) or sometihng like that. and choosing between good and evil was something with a tree (Bible again..) really interesting. i couldn't find the article, but you should google it. smile.gif

PS:no offence, but please quote when you quote.
www.logodesign.com/logo_history.html &www.britannica.com/eb/article?tocId=9053400 both give that article.

I never thought of that! I never thought of tracing the logo's history back to the Greeks and Romans, but now that you mention it, it all makes sense! Thanks for the interesting history lesson!

Really interesting! ohmy.gif

Even though the word “logo” comes from ancient Greek and it translates to “word” or “speech”, other cultures - the Babylonian, Assyrian, Mayan, Chinese, Egyptian also used pictographs to communicate words and ideas. Pictographs could be considered early logos; unfortunately, gang graffiti on the walls of inner city buildings continues that trend of identification through signs and pictures.”

I agree always quoting: http://www.logoworks.com/logos.html biggrin.gif
