Google has confirmed it is preparing its own distribution of desktop Linux, called Goobuntu, based on the popular Ubuntu distribution, which in turn is based on Debian. The announcement caused speculations that Google would move against the Microsoft monopoly on the desktop. Sadly, this is not the case. Google has released a statement saying there are no plans to release the badly named distribution outside the Google complex. "[We] use Ubuntu internally but have no plans to distribute it outside of the company.” Rumors about alternative browsers, such that Google is supposedly working on have been popping up about one per week, perhaps supported by the company's obvious interest in the desktop. Projects like Desktop Search, Google Talk, Google Earth are however much, much less complex than a full fledged desktop operating system, even if it is built on another. Even though we won't see Goobuntu on anyone's desktop, Ubuntu has only to win with this endorsement by one of the biggest names in technology, and can probably only stand to gain from having Google engineers working on their code.
i am soo proud that i use Ubuntu,,, i wish the speculations were true instead of personal use, or they should make another OS for the public, for some reason i trust google more than MS

Well, they probably use Ubuntu, with slight modifications, to suit ther own needs. I think its a good distro, altough I prefer Fedora Core. But anything is better than M$ and windows.
i like linux...linux is way better than any os microsoft has or will put out but there is the money issue...linux just isnt known to a broad audience and isnt advertised or anything...if more people knew bout linux and its capabilities i believe that it would gain a stronger foothold in the os world...but the fact is that microsoft is too big right now...they are controlling the industry (so to speak) and with the majority of people in the world not knowing how to use computers (in terms of advanced usage ) and they dont care what os they have as long as it works...and it just happens to be that windows is the only os they know about...i asked my dad last night to name all the operating systems he knows (he knows what an os is from the old days) and he said 3.1, 95, 98, me, and xp...i asked him if he was sure...and he said jup thats all of them...so i told him bout all the unix based os's and apples os's and he just kinda wondered off...
people just dont care that much yet...pretty soon everything will be based on computers and they will be forced to give a da**
Yea, that's my only hope for this 'goobuntu' is that google will force linux into the public eye much more then it is currently. Everything google does seems to get alot of publicity so if they release a direct competetor to microsoft's flagship, it'll get alot of press too. It probably won't be anything revolutionary but it will hopefully make some people stop and wonder what this "linux" word they keep hearing is all about.
Hold on - what are they trying to do with this 'Goobuntu'?? It's just another OS I will never use (for the mean time) and ... it's not going to be distributed, in an act of resistance against M.Soft or other OS companies.
Anyway, did you know that plagiarism is a crime? It's "stealing data". Psh.. everyone wants loyalty and honor, hmm? I am forced to follow the rules...
Tell me why I should care if Google release a modified Ubuntu. I hope I don't sound too arrogant, but it wouldn't be that great. It would be Ubuntu packaged with all of Googles products. Sure, it may have a few tweeks to make it better, but basically it would just be like Google pack. Its a pack of Google products to get you to use thier products.
I mean, it would shove Linux into the public eye, which is overall a good thing for Google to do, but, I mean, no one will use it. If they do, it will put Ubuntu out of business with everyone just downloading Google's supposed better version, when really its just a bunch of software they've deved. Google can use it if they want... Do us a favour though, don't release it.
I can't see it putting ubuntu out of business, since their only revenue comes from their support service (I assume) which is to enterprise level clients who would know the difference if google actually just bundled in their stuff. Now if google actually revamps it alot and fixes the handful of things keeping it from being a perfect desktop OS, all the better.
I didn't mean put out of business in a money or business sense, I mean no one would download Ubuntu from their site anymore, just the Google tweeked version. I wouldn't mind if Google and Ubuntu teamed up. That would be awesome.
Lol how insanely quickly is google taking over the world. First it's a search engine, next it's an email provider, next it's providing chat services, map features, now they are creating an operating system.
Yah google does have thier hands in everything. And Microsoft hates it, and Google altogether. looka at this from a previous post at astahost forums.
SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp. said late Thursday it had reached a settlement with rival Google Inc. and former employee Kai-Fu Lee, ending a legal battle that had exposed behind-the-scenes rancor between the companies.
In a statement, Redmond-based Microsoft said the three parties had entered into a "private agreement that resolves all issues to their mutual satisfaction."
Google confirmed the settlement and released a statement from Lee saying he was "pleased with the terms of the settlement agreement."
Microsoft spokesman Jack Evans would not say when the settlement was reached. He also would not provide details of the settlement, calling it confidential. Google also declined to comment further.
Lee had worked at Microsoft since 2000 and helped develop its MSN Internet search technology, including desktop search software rivaling Google's. He left in July to lead Google's expansion into China after Google offered him a $10 million compensation package.
Microsoft sued Lee and Google in a Washington state court, contending that Lee's job at Google would violate terms of the noncompete agreement that prohibits him from doing similar work for a rival for one year. Microsoft also accused Lee of using insider information to get his job at Google, based in Mountain View, Calif.
I also heard about a microsoft a high level microsoft worker throwing a chair and yelling "I'll kill google!, I've done it before and I'll do it again!" after one of his most valued employees said he was going to work for google. So yah, Microsoft despises google.
I use windows, just because I am forced to share computers with complete idiots that don't want me to change anything... but when I get my own computer I will test Ubuntu, linux, exc.
nopainers, if you think google is being careful to not upset microsoft... you should pay more attention to the tech news Google is pretty much blocking M$ everytime they try to expand their online presense. They beat hotmail, beat msn search, they have an IM client, they have their hands in almost everything you can do online. They aren't exactly trying to not make any companies into enemies if they are expanding into that many different parts of the tech market.
it's a combination between two of the best, google as one of the best search engines with all its new features, gmail with approx. 3 gb inbox and growing, google earth with all its benefits, froogle, google groups, chat, talk...etc. and Ubuntu which is one of the best linux distro's, it becoming more popular day by day, it's the best laptops support in all linux distro's. this partnership gives both of them a lot of power, and export worries to microsoft which is now in a very small corner waiting for a hole that it can pass from it to the whole world with a new bubble that can give it some success since all the others growing more faster, i think this distro if it comes to the reach of the users will be the most popular one in no time. p.s: I'm an ubuntu user
I don't think Google need to release an OS. What is in it for them? All they get is a war with Microsoft. I think they're quite happy building their own empire without upsetting too many people. And let's face it: their search engine is by so far the best it's not funny, gmail shook up the online mail game, and google earth and google scholar... well they're fun.
I like Google, and I like Linux. It makes me happy to know that they're using all different OS's (like you'd expect). Makes me think they're nice geeks just like me.
Hm, I'm kinda sad to hear that, would have been interesting to see what they did with it. Not that I'm overly surprised that it was all just a hyped rumor, but still, would have been an entertaining ride heh.
After a LONG wait, Google finally has managed to round-up it's online office suite by adding in
a basic Presentation creator. However, contrary to all earlier speculations - they haven't named
it Presently . Rather this new app doesn't have any distinct name at all other than being
refered to as Google Presentation. Features Microsoft PowerPoint files less than 10 MB can be
imported and exports take the shape of HTML files with images. Themes and layouts of slides can be
modified - but there aren't too many available options. As it is with Google D....

Just when you thought that Google is running out of ideas for their products, something unexpected
was introduced - a new search engine! I am sure everyone is confused - why would Google make such a
move when they already have the most popular search engine in the world (Yahoo! fans, face the
truth)? The answer is actually quite simple - but this is just my opinion - innovation. Even though
it is so widely used, we must admin that Google's search engine is a bit old-fashioned.
Unfortunately, they can't just upgrade it all of a sudden, as I am sure it would annoy....

QUOTE Ventures into online machine based translations haven't met with much success so far -
at least not to a degree that can be called phenomenal. While smaller words / phrases / sentences
translate fine, the translator engines perform rather pathetically when it comes to large chunks of
text. Translation engines have been around since the early 90's, when AltaVista came out with
its famous Babelfish . In general, the online translators are pretty good and are able to convey
the essence of the translated text. However, translator engines fair miserably ....

Google's at it again and this time with a much-needed patent search engine. It sports the same

Well, well, well. It looks like Yahoo and IBM want a piece out the Google search empire. The two

Google's feed reader has undergone a major facelift. Thank God that the developers realised
that the old scrollable interface just wasn't practical enough for users with lots of feeds.

expanded view shows the entire post) * Simplified sharing functionality (just click on the share
