| | Google has patented for a voice activated search engine in 2001 and has recently confirmed and granted, this will help the business people and other users to easily search websites, and will make the searching experiance even better. So if you have microphone, you can now easily surf the web using that. just think how far ahead and better google is making it's search engines, and now that they have patented that it will be hard for other search engine companies like Yahoo and MSN to compete with that.
Here is the link to the patent site and application: http://www.paulding.net/bin/url.cgi/13263.13
All further information is in the patent and you can read it further over there. just think what will google do next? |

Actually, most technology patents, especially in the realm of software do not apply to the end result, so much as the process. So most likely, Yahoo, MSN and everyone else will be able to create voice searches so long as they use a different method. And if it is the end result that is patented, the patent can't be very long, and if it was patented in 2001, is most likely almost over before Google even had a chance to develop it much. ~Viz

Talk about the ability to make people more lazy. Really, people can't type anymore? Yes, this could be great for disabled people, but they have many devices made for them that help. I can't understand why everyone is so involved with taking tasks so easy, such as sitting down typing, and trying to make it easier. What is this world coming to? I'm sorry if I'm ranting, but laziness gets you nowhere. But i guess it will get Google somewhere.

Heh.. well they're designing all these voice activated things because it helps very busy people who are probably already typing something and need to do a quick google search. Things like that. Also I can see the voice recognition is still developing and if developers can get it right it can be big. So because everyones voice is different it can be a great security feature also it can be used in games, another way to validate a key for example. So really voice recognition can be pretty powerful in the end -HellFire

But I wonder if it recognises the words normally, because I doubt it will be very popular, that it would get more powerful and understand sentences, now that would be cool, for example how the search will need to work if you want to use "" quotes - + and etc. ? Well, I am not that busy or lazy to type something in the sidebar of the browser.

I think one of the best applications would be the ability to search for sound files, or, if you remember part of a song, to sing it and find the full song, available for purchase, on google music (maybe). I know this technology exists, because the college I'm going to helped create it. It's not perfect, but google could use it (although they'd have to pay) and set up something like that. ~Viz

I hope they can do that too. However, that technology would be much more advanced than plain voice recognition. The music in the background will just confuse the program. I've heard of a site that allows you to tap a key to enter the rhythm of a song onto the site. Then it'll search for songs with a similar rhythm and display them. It's a pretty good idea, but too bad its music database is too small.

QUOTE(vizskywalker) I know this technology exists, because the college I'm going to helped create it. Forget the real music in the background. The college I'm going to has a program where companies can come with problems that the students help solve. One company wanted to be able to have a user sing or hum or whistle or something part of a song they remembered, bass beat, melody, whatever, and the program would search an archive for closest matches, and the school managed it. not perfectly, but it worked decently enough that it could be of some use and a company like Google could make it work. ~Viz

I doubt google would suceed. There's going to have to be massive amounts of time spent researching people's accents and the way they talk if its going to be sucessful. Besides, by the time its out, the whole "cyber world" will be able to type 4 words in less than 2 second, so whats the point?

Well the voice activated search might help people with disabilities or problems. I have had previous experiences with voice activation. Once the activation gets used to your accent it will never understand someone elses! Also, when you say "scratch that" to delete something, it sometimes come up with "scratch that" instead of deletion! My opinion is that voice activation needs to be improved in some way, but I'm looking forward to what Google have in mind! Compuccino

This is going to be BIG! I mean, we can't see it now, but it won't be long when voice activation is something that we'll be using daily. Hell, computers were the size of warehouses 50 years ago, and now a chip the size of a mole has more computing power than several warehouses of the old kind!

This seems like a good idea, but there are some things about it that just don't fit. For one, it appears like a more lazy way to search. The keyboard is right infront of you so why not use it? Also, how accurate would it be? Something you say could come out as something completely different, especially when using accents and speech problems. But there are some good points too, like what HellFire121 mentioned about people who need to search for something while already typing something. It also offers better searching for people with typing problems and the like. I did like the idea of searching for sound files and music tracks that Vizskywalker was talking about, I think that would be quite useful.
