Gmail Drive!

A friend of mine showed me a nice tool which lets you use your gmail account as a virtual disk drive on your computer. The site can be found here: http://www.viksoe.dk/code/gmail.htm

Basically what it does is it makes your GMail account an online storage.

There is a similar firefox extension that basically does the same. It is, however, quite slow, at least what I tested.

How is the functionality on that tool? Speeds?

Didnt Google ban a lot of accounts for using such a tool?:
Im pretty sure I read something about it about a year ago.

I once wanted to use it, but it never worked on my system, I downloaded gmail drive, extracted it and ran setup.exe, but nothing happened and no drives appeared.. I thought this might be, because I already have G: as a partition, but that would be stupid.. Anyway, I don't really need it, so forgot about it and as I understand, it isn't even supported by Google Mail? smile.gif

I have used it and it does work, but there seem to be some bugs. When you log in to your gmail account normally the files show up as attachments on emails. I don't use it anymore since there are other better ways of transferring files and it's not like i need extra storage space.

Yes, the files are SUPPOSED to be attachments in emails. smile.gif

A lot of people do not use GMail Drive because it is a violation of GMail Terms and Conditions and that it is slow and buggy. If you need extra storage space, why don't you use Avant Browser's offer of 2GB or something like that? Wherever you choose, make sure it is trustable and reputable so you don't lose your files. biggrin.gif

Also, maybe you should buy a second hard drive or a bigger one. That would help but not during flood, fire or theft. So online storage is a better idea for non-personal files (security??).

Hey Marky, could you be kind enuf to point me to that source ? Cause i was going to use Gmail Drive in these few days to get files of my joint Class account to make an archive. Could you please confirm this news.

Going into each mail and d'loading each attachment is crazy so thought GDrive could help me get all the files at once.

Regards
Dhanesh.

I came across something like that as well. Sorry to jump to the other person's asked clarification, but it was due to the mass sharing of wares, illegal apps, keygens, cracks, etc... That google intervened on this.

You don't get banned for it, apparently, you got locked out for a duration of-usually-24hours. I assume that, if you keep things low-profile, you should stay clear.

Gmail's policy doesn't really approve or forbids gmail drive, unless, once again, things get funky:

QUOTE

Why has my Gmail account been locked?

If we detect abnormal usage that may indicate that your account has been compromised, we may temporarily disable access. It will take between one minute and 24 hours for access to be reinstated, depending on the behaviour detected by our system.

Abnormal usage includes, but is not limited to:

* Receiving, deleting, or POPing out large amounts of mail in a short period of time.
* Sending mail to a large number of recipients in a short period of time.
* Using 3rd party file-sharing or storing software in your account.
* Logging in from multiple locations in a short period of time.
* Using your account for purposes other than email.

If you're using POP to retrieve your messages from Gmail and your account has been locked, please read I enabled POP access, and now I'm locked out of my Gmail account.

* Using your account for purposes other than email.

Hmmmmm, I'm pretty sure this last bit shows that Gmail Drive is against Google policies. Using your Gmail account to store files sure doesn't sound like using your account for email. So it's a definite violation. On the other hand, if Google doesn't discover you, I suppose it doesn't really matter. Suspending your account for 24 hours really isn't that bad; at least not as bad as being permanently banned or as long as it's not happening on a frequent basis (and if it is, Google will probably realize something fishy is going on).

I don't really feel like using Gmail Drive though, mainly because if I really wanted to store files somewhere, it's probably better if I find a server that's dedicated to that rather than mooch off Google's. There are sites out there that are dedicated to this type of thing (for free too) and using something as slow and sluggish like Gmail Drive that can also risk me being unable to log into my account is just pointless.

And really, depending on what kind of files you want to save, Google already offers file space for certain types of files anyway. If you wanted to save a word document, you could go to Google's "Docs and Sheets" and store it there. The same goes for a Excel sheet. And there's tons of websites out there that let you store images or flash files or the like.

Sounds like a cool idea... but it does sound sneaky and underhanded :/
I would have to say thanks, but no thanks. I mean Google is awesome and
has always been giving us free stuff that is rather useful... To just abuse their
space seems a little unfair and well kinda wrong... Good idea though.... ^^;
Try this link if you need storage space ^^

It's kinda like photobucket for files ^^

Google drive is against their policy which showed in their attempts to block it several months back. Or they just did that unconsciously - it would however be unwise to use your main google account for this or rely on the files being there.

Nowadays there are sites like orbitfiles.com which host a lot of files for free, and making them publicly accessible or define a password. And in case it's only for your own storage, external hard drives have only gotten cheaper with the years and are more reliable.

I don't need that tool. I use Gmail to mail, not hard-drive. I have already something about 60 GB free space.
