There are many free GIF animators out there. It just depends on the intensity and level of work you are willing to do to make it worthwhile. Adobe Photoshop/ Image Ready come with built in Animators, and so does Fireworks. I personally found Fireworks to be the most logical. Millions of thanks to u dude i needed to add some gif animations to my site u paved the way to it.
I use Adobe Photoshop, with Image Ready. I have tried many others but nothing even comes close to Image Ready.
Image Ready, has improved a great deal, although i have only used it a couple of times which were required for college work, before that i tried Paint Shop Pro, this comes with a GIF Animator, it is quite decent as far as i can remember, people might like to use this as an alternative one, being as many people use PSP as an alternative to Photoshop(WHY!).
I use Photoshop for photo editing, and Jasc Animation Shop for animation. I love Animation Shop for the ease of being able to open and save AVI files, and its "Animation Wizard." I often take clips from videos and movies to make little animated avatars for forums, and the people there always compliment them

I don't like making animations with Adobe ImageReady. In order to do so, you have to make multiple layers and hide and show specific layers in each frame.
Ugh, that sounds annoying. Animation Shop, all you need to do is hit paste and you can have yourself a nice little animated picture
What's also nice about it is the image transitions it has. Fades, slashes, wipes... It's got em all! Great for when I'm doing introductions to movies and whatnot.
my frnds ask me to make a gif banner for his hosting and i try and finish this one within 30 mins.
  i thought that it's hard to animate w/ imageready but i'm wrong about it, easier to use and almost a clone of photoshop w/ some unique functions
I find using Adobe ImageReady difficult to use for creating animation because it involves changing layers between each frame.

I have not made any true GIF animations though, because one I don't like that sort of thing and two I am concentrating on stills.

SOme things are just easier to do in Imageready, but alot of time I end up building GIF animations in Macromedia Flash. Basic animations are easy to do in Imageready and photoshop (the new Photoshop CS2 supports animation), especially since you can work in layers and stuff. It is sort of a hassle to bring the layers into other applications. I normally end up using Flash, though.

I always wanted to experiment with these. I should probably read up because I enjoy designing.
i like to take screenshots of a film i took from my digital camera and make an animated gif that way
