Gartner: Vista To Be Last Major Windows Release - Era of monolithic deployments is ending, research firm says

Aka_Bar
QUOTE
December 14, 2006 (Reuters) -- Research firm Gartner Inc. predicts that Windows Vista will be the last big release of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system.

The era of monolithic deployments of software releases is nearing an end, and Microsoft will participate in the trend toward more flexible updates, Gartner said in a list of forecasts for 2007.

Gartner also expects that the blogging trend will peak in the first half of 2007. Given the average life span of a blog and the growth rate of blogs, the research firm predicts the peak number of bloggers will be around 100 million at some point in the first half of 2007.

Gartner also said that by 2010, 60% of worldwide mobile phone users will be trackable via an emerging "follow-me Internet" technology as growing demands for national safety and civil protection relax some privacy limitations.

Marketing incentives will also push users to forgo privacy concerns, it said.

I agree with this article. There a number of reasons to do so. I think time for Microsoft Corporations getting bad then it was in 1995-2001 years, next step i think Microsoft will only issue programms for Vista like application for it and small correctations, packs for it. with trying like they did on Vista(they spent 5 years, and Microsoft had modified Vista lot of times, same as in code and on design) i think they will not create cordinal new system. So its time for Open Source Operation Systems i think and lot of people and organizations in the world at now moment using Lunix/Unix products!!!

To be honest, there are still people out there using five+ years old software (Windows 2K, ME (the lucky ones), and even 9X... actually, I've seen a few places where NT 4.0 Workstation and NT 4.0 Server were still being used in production). Most places will NEVER upgrade. Why? Personally, cost is an issue. Have you not seen the upgrade cost from XP to Vista? You could buy a full copy of XP for the price!

This will probably be a time for Linux to start taking over. It isn't impossible. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if WINE started evolving and running Windows applications to the point where Linux was like Windows. KDE already can be very customized to feel like Windows so it isn't impossible.

The only major improvement I'd like Linux to have is support for more hardware. It's like half the hardware I have isn't compatible with Linux (for some reason, it's ALWAYS my sound) and 1 in 4 my NIC isn't supported (usually happens with SuSE) or nothing is compatible (RedHat, but RedHat 9 is old anyways). When Linux becomes more "plug & play", then it will really dominate the market. After all, Windows has built in support for THOUSANDS of devices. If I had some knowledge, I'd program my own Linux OS to be a bit like Windows.

When you think about it, the real problem lies at the end user. Most switching over to Linux aren't used to half the Linux things that are needed. Like using the terminal to download software instead of downloading an EXE and having the progam install without wizards.

So to say Vista is the last major release, don't expect everyone to flock over to Linux. It won't happen unless Linux becomes more like Windows in a way. Something hardcore Linux users don't want but would need to happen in order for more people to use it.

well, the thing is Microsoft isn't what it used to be during the 90s when they reigned the operating systems market. They're actually falling to other operating systems such as MacOS X, Linux and now FreeBSD.

Why? It's because UNIX is technically superior to DOS/NT based Windows and that they all have an opensource base.

This is indeed the time where these alternative players can take a large bite in the market.

Linux is becoming more "user-friendly" and will continue to be. Many of the "regular user" hardware are supported out of the box. Even gamer's hardware are almost fully supported.

All we need are the masses to start shifting over to Linux and/or the opensource movement.

FreeBSD is also on its way, but it's still lags behind Linux.

I think that Microsoft Corparation must start some cooperation with Lunix smile.gif), They have no choice any way its going worse then was!!! Or MicroSoft must try to contrive new ideas and so!! any way we must agree that Microsoft programs time is geting away, and now new era for other more convinent Operation Systems

I recently viewed the homepage of Windows Vista on Microsoft's site. It says that Windows

is that we use RAM because the hard disk is SLOW. We do have a swap file, but we don't use it
