FTP Or File Manager - Which Is Better? - Which is better?

Hey guys talking about this topic here, what do you guys think is better? Using file manager or Ftp? I mean, everytime i use ftp it is so slow! File manager is quite fast but you can't do much with it if you want to upload lots of files at once. Yet many people seem to use ftp more than file manager. I even edit my sites using the HTML editor in the file manager of cpanel. What is what? Which is better to use? Which is more efficient? blink.gif

It all depends. If you have the capability of creating a website and testing it on your own computer, I'd make most of the site on the computer and then upload everything via ftp. If, however, one item needs modification, and the first version is already uploaded, I'd use file manager. For a quick drag-and-drop ftp setup, you can add an ftp to My Network Places on any Windows XP machine. I think that has alreaddy been covered somewhere on this forum. I will do a seacrh and get back to you with the instructions. I use the windows ftp and have relatively no problems with it.

I agree with vizskywalker it all depends on what you want to do, upload a lot of files at once or upload files fast. Unfortunately you cannot have both right now at least...

I prefer FTP for my files. I find it faster than File Manager and easier to navigate. It’s especially helpful when you need to upload multiple files. But there is really no reason why you can’t use both.

File manager allows you to select each individual file to transfer just like ftp and it is less hassle. Whether you use a HTML based one or a software one like FileZilla.

Umm... Filezilla is an FTP program. It ha a GUI which is similar to the Explorer interface, but it uploads via FTP. The Filemanager in cPanel does not use FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to upload, it uses POST data sent via http requests. So your statement make no sense.

See if web2ftp.com has what you need.

I'm not sure if I know what you're asking, but that's the website I recommend to everyone. It's web-based, meaning no possible insecure programs or anything. Not that those other services ARE insecure, just that I think uploads like Web2ftp are safer in principle.

I prefer to use FTP for my uploading to server, it is much more convenient for me, always done it with FTP manager, currently I think the best is Filezilla which does everything I need. Web file managers for me is slow and not so convenient, even though sometimes http uploading is much faster, but I usually have problems when uploading through CPanel File Manager.

One problem That i keep havving with Ftp is that it constantly disconnects whenever i stop transfering files. In a matter of 30 secs after my last file it just disconnects and its gettting really annoying having to type everything in again every two minutes. Is there anyway to keep the connection ALIVE. Does anyone know of an ftp that always keeps the connection?

When uploading files, there is nothing, no file editor, no shell access, nothing that beats ftp. I use FTP for most of my uploading and my editing now. On my previous host, the files were chowned to the php user so I had to use a php script to edit most of them. In that case, I didn't need to upload often, so I used a simple text-based script that edited the files with no fuss and no graphics.

I'd still use it probably if I was in a hurry, it is far faster than connecting to FTP.

For me the best is FTP because its fast its easy and pretty much effective Unlike File manager where you need to use a browser and the settings pretty much sucks there so thats it. What software to use there are a lot and a lot of software there but pretty much they are all the same I'm gonna share what I'm using Cute FTP that's right thats one of the best for me but the downs to the FTP and the File Manager both can suck at uploading and downloading I'm saying sometimes not always pretty much that's all the ups of the FTP the (File Transfer Protocol) nice acronym.

I prefer FTP all the time. File manager is not so fast as FTP here. And via FTP uploading files becomes easier and faster. Which FTP program do you use? I use CuteFTP, it seems to be faster than other kinds.
But when I is not manage file at home, but at school, I will use Online File Manager. I don't want to download the software and install it every time.

I guess I didn't think of using FTP for quicker connect and upload... I just usually have CPanel on my Favorites on my browser. Then I just go ahead and jump right into the file manager. It is easy because everything on my internet is 'remembered' like my pass and user. All I do is just go right to it. I guess that setting up the FTP would be easier for such tasks. When I did use FTP, I used WiseFTP... but that was before I played with Astahost...

I will have to think about trying the CuteFTP maybe, or at least check it out...
