In the case of the free web host you can earn money only if it is permited by the web host owner, for example, ASTAHOST allows us to add Google AdSense ads on our pages, so, you can earn money by advertising in both cases.

In both cases you need technical skills to run your web host and also you will learn about web servers and programming.

And remember that usually you cannot use your own home computer for hosting your site : your Internet provider will probably not give you a professional bandwidth for the price of a personnal connexion. And probably paying a profession Internet connexion will cost more than the price of paid hosting on most of paid hosting provders.

Add to that Beg for Bandwidth If you seriously want to make money from a website, you need bandwidth.

The reality is that you need to put a lot of work into making your website appealing, in order to get traffic. If you get venture capital, you can hire a bunch of people to make that happen fast. If you are more typical, you will do it yourself to minimize cost -- that means an investment of time. Maybe weeks, more likely many months.

I'm here because Xisto offers the best of both worlds. AstaHost & Friends when you are working on a shoestring, getting "almost" free hosting when you pay by sharing what you have learned. Then, when the bandwidth (and hopefully money) starts to build up, you can move your website to paid hosting and handle the additional bandwidth. In the meantime, you can develop at your own pace without having money bleed away.

The one expense for this (besides computer and internet access) is your own domain name. Last time I checked, GoDaddy sold .info names for $2/yr. That way, you have control of how people find your website, wherever is is hosted! If your DNS entry is busted, I have never seen any place respond faster than Xisto!

In summary: My opinion is that free hosting is better while you are developing, then move to paid hosting when you need it, and hopefully can afford it! wink.gif

A dedicated server is not the best option for an important website that can't have downtime, or a business site, if it's hosted locally by you, but if you want to have a small blog and don't have many visitors, it's not such a bad option. I have a server pc made from some old PC components I had lying around, with Ubuntu Server edition running on it, though I could easily switch to windows on it, which would probably be easier. Anyways, you would need to pay for a domain name, free or not, as the only 'free domain' services I've seen are ones like Uni.Cc and CO.cc. Aside from all that, it depends on what you want. If you want the best learning experiance, set up a dedicated server. If you just want a site, get a free hosting account.

I think the sheer scale of your website needed to warrant getting your own web server is the limiting factor in most cases. Simply put, if a free host can do what you want then there's little reason to move: either to a paid host or your own server. Besides from the initial startup cost (i.e. the cost for the actual server itself), I gather that the majority of the expenses come from the maintenance. Most household ISPs don't allow you to run your own server, or they have fairly stringent policies on bandwidth and the like.

Still, once the initial costs are covered you can run as many sites as you can manage with your server with relatively low monthly costs. Just in passing, domain names aren't at all that expensive, you can generally get one for a year for around $10. Compared to the price of the internet service it's a relatively minor expense. Naturally, if I could afford it I'd certainly be after my own server, but free hosting is all I currently need. AstaHost is basically exactly what I need in terms of getting my site online, so I'm not looking for anything else. smile.gif

Another reason to host your own web server is if you want to share with your friends or family some big files like music or video files, you need to access your pc remotely or you need to show to your client the progress of the work you are doing for them. Of course, you will do this only some times, only when it is needed or when you are in a hurry.

For this you only need to get an account with a Dynamic Dns service like No-Ip and install a web server on your pc like Apache or IIS, then set up your web server to let it been able to access the files or folders that you need to access or share, and finally start up your webserver and your Dynamic Dns Client, Simple right???.

You probably won't need to host your own web server, unless you can't find third-party hosts to host you site. It is probably not as economically to host you own web server then to purchase a hosting plan or server from a third party. It will be cheaper to purchase since those companies specialise in web hosting and can host you sites for cheaper (unless they charge excessive fees).
