vbulletin would be the best one if it would be for free, or a working trial version of it would be available. since its not, my choice is Invision. I like PhpBB but it is crippled with some features (although you could install mods on it).

Personally, I prefer phpBB as it is easier to customise it, like its appearance and feel, inserting additional texts and so on. But I'll say IPB comes in very close on phpBB

I think the best is IPB but isn't free, is it? PhpBB is good, but only for 3 days after that it's released, there are too many exploits

QUOTE (megaboy @ Oct 20 2004, 12:31 PM) phpBB because it's easy to install mods. I wouldn't say so... If your mods are not small ones. Sure mods are probably easier to install than in other systems because of the EasyMod but still it isn't easy. I just fought two nights with the categories hierarchy... Also phpBB needs mods as it hasn't that many featureas built-in. That's probably what has driven the developmnet of EasyMod. I use phpBB on my site but I would use vBulletin if I wasn't such a cheapskate. PhpBB 2.2 sounds very promising... Only of they could finish is someday...

I disagree about phpBB being easy to install mods in. There are definatley more modifications for the software phpBB than for any other software (e.g. Invision or vBulletin) but nevertheless they are probably more difficult to install. Also phpBB is overall harder to use that Invision Power Board.

I vote for Invision Power Board. I have used IPB for years now and it has never let me down. I've been a Licensed IPB user for over 3 years and I personally think I want to stay with IP.Board.

I have been using phpBB3 for as long as it has been out. Before I did not like phpBB2 however this new version is awesome. It brings it right up to par with the other systems. I like it better than some of the paid scripts because of its large base community. Demo: free forum hosting

Invision Power Board has a lot of nice features like fast reply and its pretty customizable. The only thing is that its not completely free, while phpBB is completely free and open source. However phpBB doesn't have as many features and sometimes security is not good.

Preferred Forum System

I am trying to decide which forum software I should install for my site. I need something free
(obviously) and I need a good choice. I think phpBB works great but I am also interested in trying
IceBB. Simple Machines Forum is time-consuming to configure and I don't like Invision Power
Board (and that isn't free). I have tried testing out the forums at OpenSourceCMS but there
were way too many choices and the forums were just completely overwhelming to try them all out.

vBulletin And Invision Power Board
- (6)
yes i know, there are alot of topics comparing them but everyone has thier own opinion and i want to
give mine as well as hear a few. First of both vBB and IPB are very powerful forums, infact both
the board have won awards for most powerful forum software available, now vbulletin (IMO) is a more
proffesional forum, as it requires you edit the config.php.new file to set it up and does not have a
script where you enter your information like IPB does, vBB is also more proffesional because it has
some features (pro features) that arnt included in IPB (ie: you can customize...

Other, More Weird Forum Softwares

Well, today Ir elised more than ever that my beloved SMF is still the best. Today I was doing some
tests of the new ->SMF convertors, which are amazing in their selfs, first all you need to specify
it the old forum location and the new location, and it will find the database settings and
everything by itself, once its got the data it emptys the SMF forum of its data and then moves the
old data over. If the server load is going to be too large, it does it in small chunks, I think its
500 messages/members/stuff at a time, so large forums will take a while, but the server ...
