I have been learning with a program called GIMP at http://www.gimp.org/ which is currently at version 2.2.17. I use it to edit my photos with the included plugins but you can always find more online. You might also have to download the 'help manual' and the 'GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment' from the following location. http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.htmlI use this software to cr... read more.
As far as I know, the GIMP is the best free open-source image editing program around, with its many funcationalities against the industry's best but costly Photoshop. IrfanView 3.95 seems to be a popular free option as well. http://www.download.com/IrfanView/3000-219...ml?tag=lst-0-13
You can try searching around in Download.com, like here. There are some good ones like Paintshop but they aren't freeware, though trial versions are available. QUOTE(busdriver630 @ Apr 12 2005, 10:19 PM) hey. im an amature photographer, and i was wondering if you guys know any good (free) photo editor. right now i use GIMP. but if you have any suggestions i would like them. thanks I don't know of any free photo editors that are good, unfortunately. I think Paint Shop Pro gives a thirty day free trial if you want to try that: http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite?pag...d=1047024307383 I actually liked PSP when I used it. There are some free photo programs at downloads.com, but I do not think they are very good. I wish there were good photo programs out there that were free, but unfortunately I don't think there are any. Photoshop is around $80, so you might try that. iPhoto is good for simple things like cropping, getting rid of red eye, and converting to black and white.
Save yourself the trouble and invest in Photoshop Elements 3. Sure, it costs about $99, but the ease of use will save you time in the end. GIMP is great if you can handle it, but your limited because of the lack of Photoshop plugins and actions.
alrighty, let's get things straight:
irfanview has very little options. gimp is about the best thing you'll find for free if you're willing to spend money or go illegal, go for adobe elements if you wan't easy photo correction, or paint shop pro. this is for things like red-eye removal and stuff. if you really want a pro-tool, adobe photoshop is the only answer
To me, nothing beats the power of Photoshop CS, you can get a free download at www.adobe.com (30 day trial) and give the baby a test drive, you'll be hooked because I was, I went out and bought a copy cost a lot but I was happy. You can always do it the less... legal way, I won't tell you how here because I'm pretty sure it violates some sort of rule.
photo studio 2000 has worked for me and i am very happy with it u have to but it but in the long run u will really enjoy using it well peace out and god bless

You want FREE? A decent little photo editor can be found at Nonags.com called Pixia. It is really easy to use and the results are pretty good. I would recommend it to anyone who needs a good entry-level graphics editor, especially for photo enhancing.
You can always use the trial versions of Photoshop or that Elements thing and then I guarantee you will never stop using it....yes it is that addictive!

I use this software to create my flyers, convert photos to black and white, add borders, resize and layout for printing, and modify text using different layers. I create own templates of various print/resolution sizes, add guidelines, and custom layers. There are a lot of exporting options which are great for graphics projects. You can use the included plugins or download more online. There are not as much tutorials online as Photoshop but at least the software is free. I recommend this software if your on a budget or if you are learning how to go graphics / photo editing. I have an Olympus camera that comes with an photo management program call 'Olympus Master' which can also be downloaded from their website for free. If you haven't bought a camera yet, buy one first cause it might have a bundled images management program with all the editing/manipulation features you desire. Other software i've tried are Pixela, Picasa 2, Paint.Net. They are also free aswell. I hope the suggestions help.
Note: this is *NOT* the right forum to discuss this, put it in the software section next time please.

Paint Shop Pro definately, it's just the best in it's kind I think. Easier to use then Photoshop and cheaper, some say that Paint Shop Pro is the little brother of Photoshop, but I think it's the other way, Photoshop just isn't as good as Paint Shop Pro.

Windows Paint... thats all I have to say lol. Best program ever. Nah I'm kidding
Me, I'm an Adobe guy, I've used every version of Adobe since 5.0 was released (and yet i'm still dumb at it). I've used Paint Shop Pro and Coral Paint etc and Adobe Photoshop is by far the best. The best Photoshop would be 7.0 or 6.0 CS and CS2 I think arent as good. I dont know why but 6 and 7 are by far the best.
If your camera offers a program to edit your photos then use that one. If not, I recommend Adobe photoshop because it's great at everything! Paintshop pro works fine... (It's quite similar to adobe photoshop) I like both of them and NI use both of them so you can choose between those two... Those two I recommend. Maybe try find any programs you already have which is included in your cd case or something...
