Why Does HTML File Saved Show As IE File?

lonebyrd
I saved a little project I was doing that I wanted to use for my new webpage. Well, I saved it in regular old notepad and it is strictly in HTML. The space where it says 'type of file' I put 'all files' because there is no option for HTML. For file name I put FTVmain.html. But for some reason, when I go to notepad to open the file, it shows it as a Internet Explorer file. I don't remember an HTML file being shown as an IE file before. Is that what it is supposed to be or am I doing something wrong?

Ok, I'm sure you know that in Windows, the letters following the dot in file names are called file extensions. Each extension is associated with a certain software. For example, .txt is usually associated with NotePad, .bmp with Paint, .pdf with Adobe Reader, etc.

In exactly the same way, .htm and .html files are associated with your default web browser, which is obviously Internet Explorer. So as soon as you save any file with the extension .htm - or .html - it's recognized by Windows as an IE file, gets its icon, and when opened, it's viewed in an IE window.

I hope that was clear enough smile.gif.

By the way, you should not change that.
You could imagine associating the .html extensions with notepad. but, then, you would not any more be ablo to surf over the net, the first remote index.html would probably be opened with notepad.

If you want to edit an HTML document just right click it and tell the dialog box to open it with notepad, but don't check always use this ... unless you want big problems when you actually want to view HTML after you have edited it, if you just want to view an HTML file then couble left click it and it will open in your default browser, which apparently is IE if it were Firefox then that would open an HTML file.

You've never seen your HTML files in IE? What were the other files before this one like? If this one is different than your other files, you've probably done some changes to your Operating System. Try to find one of your older files and see if they also open in IE now.

(Yay, testing out the new ACRONYM tag :D)

hi friends, Does anybody know the difference between .htm and .html files. I am wondering why there
are two extensions for the same type of files!! Even some hosts make the index.htm as the
home page and some do the other way. Isn't there any standard for making the home page. Some
even use default.htm as home page. When the page with different extension is present then it gives a
