well i dont know much about the IT constultants role but i think that at least have to know on how to fix a P.C. and repair it. also i think they need to have to interact with the clients. stuff like that i think

I use to work for New Zealand Computer Consultancy, not as a consultant but their Office Administrator, ironic don't you think?. There was about 16 staff, each having different specialisations, Networking, Software/E-Business, Databases and Programming. You needed to understand technical information systems as well as software application packages. Now the youngest consultant was 28 and he was still studying while working there, the oldest would have been around late 40s. Everyone seemed to have different qualifications, but they all had there Masters. I understand that entry level requires a Bachelors in Information Technology or Computer Science, although you probably would need your Masters and experience in the IT field (it would have to be quite some years) to actually secure this type of job. I would probably also recommend having MCSE or RHCE as it does touch on things you would need to know. I was only 18 at the time and only there for a year so I could go to University, the company had quite a reputation and was often the choice that government agency chose. They're still doing quite well and have expanded the company and have over 40 staff now, except last month I went to a funeral of one of the guys who I knew when I worked there. Not only was it worth working for them, you gain so much contacts and information, that you'd be able to start your own business with all that knowledge, but I still recommend University degrees. If you're considering this, working in the IT field will help with technical know how and you'll start seeing people asking you for your expert opinion, this is just the same as working as a consultant but not being highly paid as them. umm i am confused... do IT consultants work for a single company or is he a kinda independent guy who gets hired by companies for projects?
I think consultants are a part of a larger consultancy firm or they may work as freelancers. The crux of the matter is when an organization is in a fix and has run out of ideas - they usually hire one of these or a group of these people to "consult" and solve their problem...The consultants visit this organization and look into the matter from a first hand perpective and come up with a report as to whats going wrong & where. The report also contains remedies (sometimes an assortment of remedies according to different budget plans)
hmm.. okay thanks for explaining, microscopic^earthling.. i had that doubt for quite some time. now i am thinkin of being a consultant after computer engineering :-)
Does a freelance consultant need a license or permit? How can one obtain such a license if needed?
