Attaining fast speeds with a 56 kbps modems taken from internet===================================== Attaining fast speeds with a 56 kbps modemA modem connection must fulfill three requirements to support a 56 kilobits per second (Kbps) (also called V.90) connection: The host server must use a digital connection to the network. Your Internet service provider can tell you if they support 56 Kbps service. Both ends of the connection must support the same protocol, the V.90 standard or either of its predecessors, K56flex, or 3COM/USR X2. For example, if your Internet service provider has a V.90 device, your modem must support the V.90 protocol. There can only be one analog connection between your modem and the host computer. The phone line in most homes is an analog line. If a connection does not meet these requirements, a modem falls back to the fastest protocol that works for the connection. For example, a 56 Kbps V.90 modem falls back to the 33.6 Kbps V.34 protocol if it cannot make a V.90 connection. Even if your connection fulfills these requirements, other factors may reduce either the transmission speed or the number of times that you successfully obtain the highest speed connection. For example, old lines, or lines that are subject to interference, might reduce transmission speeds. Maximum throughput speeds of 26 Kbps are not unusual in these cases. Devices to improve the quality of your telephone service may also hamper 56 Kbps V.90 modem connections. Load coils found on long wire lengths to improve voice quality do not usually prevent V.90 connections, but can reduce the speed. Digital pads, which balance the volume of voice calls, usually do not prevent V.90 connections, but they can reduce the speed. Analog pads prevent V.90 connections, because they convert the digital data to analog to balance the volume, and then back to digital data. This inserts an additional analog section in the line. In practice, the 56 Kbps speed supported by the V.90 and other protocols is unattainable. U.S. government regulations that currently safeguard public phone systems limit transmission speeds to 53 Kbps. Phone-line noise and other limitations of phone systems usually keep average transmissions in the 40 to 50 Kbps range.

seems alot of info to get a full 56k speed information. all it is is you have to have a digital connection and you have to pay more to convert it to digital. and pay a little bit more to convert it back to analog for a broadband connection. but these days people dont use 56k anymore its too slow and broadband is available almost for every home.

Quite useless.. Even if you get full 56k, that's nothing compared to my 1600 kbit/sec ADSL download speed. Still wondering why ADSL, using the same telly-fone line, can have such great speeds. :S

They are using AOL DSL and had their ISP's modem. They have a Linksys router (forgot what

problem. The modem connects to the computer using USB ONLY. It has an ethernet adapter in the back
of the modem but it will not work (needs the USB either way). After playing around more for over an
hour, I came to some "conclusion" that the other machines need the modem to be connected via ....

Cable Modem Keeps Rebooting

Dropping Off-line
Any way to test a Cable Modem or Router? (2) I've been having this problem lately of dropping off-line (always on, cable access) I

How Fast Can You Type?
(92) When I was a kid - about 14 or 15 - just about everybody who saw me type commented on how fast I
went. Back then, I was at about 80 WPM, but now I'm doing around 100 without too many errors
(maybe 3 every minute ... more if I'm typing as I think, because I usually go back to rephrase
things). At community college - a very small school in a rural area - half the class would sit and
watch me type. They eventually got used to that and left me alone, but the first few weeks of school
were just ... weird. (I was a journalism major, so I spent a lot of time in the lab....
Server Slow On LAN, Fast On The Internet
(14) Hey, Here's a weird problem I've encountered. On my test server running CentOS and Apache2
w/ the Apache2 Manual installed and accessible from the web, everything seems fine. So I access it
via my home network on which the server is located and the manual loads like I'm on a 56K
connection. To give you an idea of the speed, it's just a tweak faster than using MySpace during
peak hours. MySpace is still slower than my server though. But today at school, I try it and the
thing loads like it was on an OC-93 fiber line at a data center! AND- if I try to FTP....

Gigabit LAN

The first piece of equipment to be replaced is the current Wireless Router which will be upgraded so

Mech Games
Fast and Deadly Vs. Slow and Deadly (9) There are a whole host of giant robot fighting games, mechwarrior, zone of the enders, etc etc. My

alright, so recently I've been doing some research on a new mech game coming out for the PS2
called S.L.A.I. (steel lancer arena international) hunting after a demo that came out with with an

Burnout 3
Fast paced racing game (32) Who here has Burnout 3? When I bought my copy, it was a special edition with director's cut and
was bought right from the company that produced it (It was frikken expensive too!) One of the things
I don't like about it is that when you are driving, the speedometer is completely full of @#$%!
I mean, how can you be going 200mph on a 200ft stretch, and have it take 10 seconds to get from one
end to the other!? I mean come on. It is fun and all, but a lot of things are quite unbelievable.
Anyone here feel free to compare and contrast Burnout 3 to any other racing ga....
