Well, according to the report, even if it did hit earth, it would only cause local damage and have regional impacts. and since it won't be visible from the US, i'd say it'd be ok if it hit somwhere else. i mean, whaddya do? haha. jk i wouldn't want anyone to be hurt by it. but it's good to know even if they're wrong we could probably (hopefully?) figure out where it would i... read more.

The asteroid, speculated to come near earth in 2029, will be viewable from Asia, Africa, and Europe. You better buy your tickets now! This is a once in a millenium event...

This will definetly attract lots of attention. The full article is available on CNN: CLICK HERE.

I wonder how close that prediction will come. It seems like it is a long ways away so who knows how much that could change?

Fortunately it will not hit us. An impact would be disastrous!!! (duh)

wow till 2029!! if it is going to hit us, we got loads of time to make something to destroy it. something like the films hollywood have been making for ages. hopefully it wont be a disaster though!

Things are unpredictable. Even if our technology does tell us about something accurately, it's not really perfect so there may be some flaws in their observation. It may go as they predicted it to be, it may hit us or it may be farther from the position they predicted. Only the future can tell. wink.gif

i chuckle at an amusing idea. so terrorists wanna destroy america, right? well, if they could fly up there and use a large enough explosion, they could push the asteroid and blow up the earth. but that would be silly.

I wonder how close it will actually get and how easily it can be seen by the human eye. It seems pretty cool to see such a thing; it's like an eclipse or something but even cooler. Does anyone plan to be in those areas when it flys by?

I'm in Europe and I can't wait! However I am concerned about one thing:

QUOTE
2004 MN4 circles the Sun, but unlike most asteroids that reside in a belt between Mars and Jupiter, the 323-day orbit of 2004 MN4 lies mostly within the orbit of Earth.

The 2029 flyby will bend the rock's path and change the circumstances of later close passes to Earth. "However, our current risk analysis for 2004 MN4 indicates that no subsequent Earth encounters in the 21st Century are of concern,"

Note the orbit of 323 days. So ever 323 days it orbits round the Earth and the Sun. What is going to happen to it to change it's orbit to make it come so close in 2029? I did laugh at the statement about the "Current Risk Analysis". In the past, most risk assessments forget to factor in one variable or another. Lets just hope it's not anything too drastic, or in 2030 could be an interesting year.... blink.gif

I recall watching a special on the Discovery Channel when I was about eight years old that speculated on the disasterous results an asteroid impact could have on Earth.

I also recall the show mentioning a possible collision in 2030, and do not remember sleeping at all that night from fear.

So this is messing with my mind a little bit.

Where do I plan to be around the time of this sighting? Either dead or Mars. I'm not a risk taker biggrin.gif

or we could just build a really big trampoline and and launch it into a new orbit. i think that'd be the best idea. then no one gets hurt and no property is damaged. plus after the asteriod was launched back from earth we could all get together, drink some booze and bounce on the trampoline in jubilation! woo hoo!!

....wow, i think it's time for bed....yes...need....sleep...

A wile ago they thought it would hit the earth. For about one day people were totaling freaking out then they relized they did the math wrong. I was young and never relized anything was wrong and didnt hear any of this to the next day when it was all figered out. But that would suck if it hit the earth.

It would probably be a very quick death.

I think everyone's just hoping it won't hit us biggrin.gif . But in reality, if the asteroid really is going to be coming as close to the Earth as these reports claim then we might want to brace ourselves. Someone else mentioned that all kinds of factors (other metorites, space junk, etc, gravity, etc.) can affect its path. If that's the case then it is very hard to predict whether it will hit us, skim by, or even get close. These anaylses are really just educated guesses. No one really knows on stuff like that especially when it's that far in the future. Then again, if it does hit us, we're screwed. I mean there isn't anything we can do.... Something as large as that would cause tidal waves, earthquakes, you name it. Probably get wiped out like the dinosaurs. And as to destroying it? We'd never pull that off for a few reasons.
1. We don't have anything powerful enough to destroy something that big.
2. We don't have the technology / experience to fire a weapon into space, far enough to hit it before it hits us.
3. What happen's if by some miracle we do hit it? Millions of rocks rain down upon us. That wouldn't be cool.
Anyways, yeah that's my take on thing. Wow, that took a while... biggrin.gif
