Asteroid Could Collide With Mars On Jan. 30, Astronomers Say

QUOTE
Mars could be in for an asteroid hit.

A newly discovered hunk of space rock has a one-in-75 chance of slamming into the Red Planet on Jan. 30, scientists said Thursday in Los Angeles.

"These odds are extremely unusual. We frequently work with really long odds when we track … threatening asteroids," said Steve Chesley, an astronomer with the Near Earth Object Program at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The asteroid, known as 2007 WD5, was discovered in late November and is similar in size to an object that hit remote central Siberia in 1908, unleashing energy equivalent to a 15-megaton nuclear bomb and wiping out 60 million trees.

Scientists tracking the asteroid, currently halfway between Earth and Mars, initially put the odds of impact at one in 350 but increased the chances this week. Scientists expect the odds to diminish again early next month after new observations of the asteroid's orbit, Chesley said.

"We know that it's going to fly by Mars and most likely going to miss but there's a possibility of an impact," he said.

An impact, I think too is unlikely. If it did, it would be spectacular since we're so close to Mars, we can all aim our telescopes and watch the spectacular event.

That could be really interesting. Hopefully I remember come when it may happen so that I can keep an eye out for it. Either way if it does I'm sure there will be some intense video captured of it through high powered telescopes. Should be an interesting time to be sure.

That would be so cool if mars got hit. I just bought a super expensive telescope a while ago, and I've been wanting to look at something cooler than the moon.

So I wonder if a lot of this stuff happens, what effects could it have to Earth and our moon... That would be interesting to see though.

I don't think there would be much affect back here on Earth since Mars is quite the distance away.

This is quite interesting if it were to happen. A quick Google News search did point out that the asteroid will likely miss Mars though: http://news.google.ca/news?hl=en&ned=&...tnG=Search+News

The size of an asteroid that wiped out 60 million trees, wow, sounds really powerful.

One of the biggest craters on Earth is over a third of a km deep, and about 1.6km wide, created from a 10-15m asteriod. There's probably some estimates on the 1908 thing.
