Windows Vs Linux

1-Security is depend on many parameters in per network, and only operating system can't to meet to cover the security.
For example : a few years ago a company employed number of peoples to search in the papers and rubbishes of Microsoft and find Codes of Microsoft, and found important information .
Then we can see that the security of a network is depend of many factors that we may don't care about those.
Windows and Linux have weaknesses in security, but because of many users of Windows, naturally the weaknesses of Windows is discoverable from them.

2- User Friendly:
Every body know that Windows is easier than Linux for ordinary and amateur users.
By few years a go the users of Linux had to compile Kernel of Linux. Of course recently, latest version of Linux is better than older version of Linux.
Linux most understand that ordinary and amateur users don't have any interest to compile programs or type commands. They prefer to easily click on the setup.exe in Windows.
Of course, Linux is Open Source, and can help professional programmers and is good tool for them. Linux is an enemy for amateur users and a strong friend for professional users.
Although, may be Linux Os of servers, but can't be a friendly Os for ordinary users.

3- Application:
Linux have extra capability in networks. For example if you want to limit the Bandwidth of users Linux will resolve this, but Windows can't.

I would use liux because it too, is user friedly and it's very coustomizeable-and there aren't as many security problems

But I can't get a program that will burn the ISO onto a disk correctly-it won't boot!!!!!!

Linux is good, I like it very much and as you say it very user friendly. It's stable and safe.

For troop007-admin : You can burn ISO files simply with Nero. You just have to select where your image is and then click burn. Then you have your cd.

Linux as stated is free and opensource so its far cheaper than windows. Linux isnt widely supported but if everyone were to use Linux then im sure games would become available for linux. biggrin.gif I am trying a version of linux called ArkLinux (www.arklinux.com) its very user firendly and easy to install. wink.gif But on a final note how can anyone resist TUX the penguin hes so cute. laugh.gif

I have always been a loyal windows supporter and will continue to be. I had a look a linux a couple of years ago and it just didnt match up. Perhaps its different now. Should i take another look?

I'm a faithful Microsoft Windows vet, and I admit Linux is good for a server, but in my opinion, any of the BSD Unixes beat linux in every way...well maybe some versions are not so user friendly but in terms of stability and usefulness, BSD is better...the most stable servers on the 'net are hosted on BSD-based machines, even though the majority of the servers on the 'net are hosted on Linux...The only "bad" version of Unix is SCO-Unix, very buggy and unstable....

Ive used Windows for about 5 years now and love it but im saying linux is really different and great for free.

Windows vs Linux:

1: Security can depend on many different things... but the most the most crucial part is the core, the operating system. a secutity hole in the kernel will effect all applications, which is why fixing / patching security holes as soon as possible is VITAL... the advantage of linux, an open source OS is that this can be done very fast....

not too long ago there was a major kernel bug, it enabled un-privilaged users to shutdown the machine by halting the kernel...(i think it was called evil) there was a patch available within 12 hours, and completely new kernel available within 5 days.

it generally takes Microsoft several months to do this. (if they decide to do it at all)

2: User firnedlyness....
Linux can be setup (pre-installed) by an experianced user, and left to the computer illiterate.
all the hard stuff is done once.. and never again.
people who have never used a computer before can begin suing it easily. no further maintenance is required.

however with windows, the computer illiterate people MUST learn how to update there virus scanners, Scan there drives for virii.. memorise rules about what files are save to download , and which are not (exe, com, dll, pif, bat, vbs) they must learn to de-fragment there hard disks, they must learn to edit the registry in some cases to remove virii..

and after a year or so... they must learn to completely re-install windows, all the drivers, software, everything.

linux is easyer in the case that it does not need ocnstant maintenance.

3: applications...
well.... there's nothing to argue here.

The Mortgage Man
If linux were Solaris, all of the accolades might be justifiable, but with so many different variants I can't be bothered. Reality in my limited (silicon Valley) world is that large companies use Windows and Solaris, AIX, or HP-UX.

Therefore, there are more jobs requiring those skills. Very few companies have standardized on Linux, just check the job postings.

Just my opinion - worth as much as I charged for it.

Yeah... Windows is an okay operating system when it works....
but i share my computer with my family, and windows does not protect the non-techies from virii spyware adware very well.

when my computer illiterate family use linux, nomatter what they do, they are protected from adware, spyware and virii... i dont have to remind them what files that can downnload and hwat they cant.

plus i dont have to keep teaching them how to do disk deframgments or virus scanner updates.
or driver re-installations.

anyways.... its all just opinions... any1 could argue this subject and never come to a conclusion.

Linux is in great danger at the moment. That danger started when Microsoft cut their deal with

has died down to a large extent and apathy has set in. To combat this the Free Software Foundation
brought out their GPLv3 but this seems to be too little too late.
